Euro Tour Suspends Golfer For Marking Ball Incorrectly

hehehehe RUH ROH

If the accusations against him are true he got off easy. I once played with a kid in high school who would do the exact same thing when replacing his ball. I finally called him out on it and he stopped immediately, but I didn't report the infraction to his coach. I know its not a huge advantage but at the same time it is intentionally cheating and that has no place in the game of golf.

These are the kinds of rules that I hate about golf. Really? I think its just dumb.

yeah...you ought to be able to put the ball where ever you want on the green..... when replacing it on the green you should be able to just drop it in the cup. Works for me

Never nice to hear this about one of my countrymen. I'd really like to hear him 'stand up for himself' now, like he said he should have at the time. Come on Elliot, instead of standing up to rules officials and your 2 playing partners, you now have the attention of the whole golfing community, worldwide. Now's the time to explain yourself.

Yeah thats what I do. Whats wrong with that? You should try it too, dont worry I wont DQ you.

:D.......I don't have any trouble with adapting your technique

Yeah you caught me doing a little One-T skimm action. But really sometimes I dont uderstand the Tours and the guys, why didnt someone just say something to this guy after the first hole? Dude, stop marking your ball wrong or were not signing your card? Anyway, got my eyes on you dude.

How much did he move it by? An inch? A foot? I'd say that if it was less than an inch that's pretty minor, but rules are rules. I would like to know exactly what he did.

And yes, I first thought this was about marking on the ball too..... :D

How many people thought they meant marking it like with a sharpie? Honest question!

That was what I thought of first, but I knew that couldn't be it. Ever see how Duffy marks his golf ball (to identify it)? I am guessing he still does what he did in the 90s - - - he scribbled lines all over the ball.

I did when I read the tweet this morning. Then, read another tweet that he moved ball closer to hole five times. Not sure what advantage you get from moving the ball closer to hole on green. I doubt he moved it 10", or even 3".

Is there a "wrong" marking on a ball? Like, if a player writes a golf thought - "DON'T SWAY!" - is this a violation? Just wondering.

FYI, I always mark with 3 blue dots on the lower right side of the ball number and an alignment line across the entire ball.

The whole point of marking your ball before lifting it is so that you can replace it as closely as is humanly possible to the same spot. By moving it to side and forward he could have been taking some irregularity in the green out of his line of putt. The fact that he was told several times that he was in the wrong and just ignored the warnings is sufficient evidence to me that he was doing it intentionally. I don't think that this guy is the sharpest tack in the box. :D

Totally agree if he was doing it he should be punished; it's cheating. What I don't get it why do it? You know you won't get away with it and the article suggested he was gaining a centimeter at most. This seems like a prepostorous risk for a pro to take. He thinks he can make it from 15'5" but not 15'4.75"????? That's nuts!

Fourputt, where did you see he was repeatedly warned? I couldn't find anything to that affect and was wondering why his playing partners didn't just call him out as others have suggested.

Tough break that he wasn't playing with Ian Poulter. He doesn't believe in being a snitch.

Agree. Can't understand his mind set.

Strangely, I have missed many putts by a centimeter. Haha!!

Good thing he wasn't in Pakistan, I heard it's death. I kid of course, wow, stiff penalty.

This whole thing cracks me up. Seriously, it sounds like he was only moving his ball closer to hole in miniscule amounts. Why on earth would he risk penalties for a nominal distance? I bet, though, that he was doing more egregious actions on the green when oportunities present themselves. I played with a guy once that always suggested that his marker was on my line and would offer to move it, even when it was clearly 2-3 feet away from my line. Moreover, he was using the length of his entire putter to move his marker, not just the length of the blade. I thought that this was all a bit strange, but didn't think much else of it... UNTIL I noticed that he was actually moving his ball a foot or so closer each time he moved his marker back. I wouldn't put it past Saltman to do something similar everytime he moved his marker from a line; he would probably move it back 3 inches or so closer to the hole.

That is all I said too - that his fellow competitors observed it, warned him, and were ignored. It was commented on another forum, but I can't find verification of it. I've also seen 2 different statements on how he was mismarking the ball, but no verification of them either. In any event, I'm inclined to believe because that is what I would do. I'd tell the guy that I thought he was wrong, and if he either disputed my assertion, or simply ignored me and continued his actions, whatever they were, then I would be obligated to report it. That is what I believe happened, and when he was asked by the tournament committee, he admitted it.

There does seem to be a shortage of specific facts about the case. A lot of supposition and innuendo, but the only evidence is from his 2 fellow competitors, and no details of the accusation seem to be available.

My first thought was the sharpie. Well, when compared to those other two suspensions, this one seems kind of light.

I admit I was trying to envision how you sharpie a ball to gain an advantage.

I just don't get why cheat when the you have the ability to play at this level, curious if we will ever hear of him playing at the pro level again? Sure wouldn't look forward to being paired with this guy when/if he comes back if I were a pro.

Yep, this was my first reaction. I thought he'd drawn some pornographic images on his ball or something

See ripper's post #13

i dont think moving the ball "closer" would do anything especially if its just a few inches or less
but moving the ball left or right would change the line especially if there was a ball mark or other imperfection (that wasnt quite flat) in the way of the original line

Whaaat? I get being banned for altering a scorecard, but 20 years for replacing a ball incorrectly?!?!

Maybe he replaced it from OB to the fairway... with his foot???
