Incredible. That is the word I would use to describe Forest Glen Golf & Country Club. Situated in East Naples and on the edge of the Everglades Forest Glen creates a wonderful golfing experience. Course conditions that rival the most exclusive clubs and service that is more than an empty smile, adds up to one of the best golfing days I have ever had.
Forest Glen is built upon 630 acres, home to abundant wildlife and even though you are the edge of town the layout gives you a feeling of isolation. While there are homes along most holes on the front 9 you still do not feel bound by day to day life. Designed in 2008 by Arthur Hills Forest Glen features Paspalum fairways and greens, a nice break from the Bermuda grass that dominates much of the South. This course is also a rarity in South Florida in that it is easily walked by those who so chose to. You know, the serious types.
The practice facility is excellent, an aqua range with ample targets and complimentary range balls await the eager golfer who’s trying to find his swing on a Saturday morning or the grinder who wants to groove the swing after work. A large putting green offers you a respite from beating balls over on the range, and a nice little feature is small smaller holes on the green just to frustrate you even more on those lip outs.
The staff is over-the-top friendly. From the starter to the cart staff, everyone is eager to help and no matter who you are, you are always addressed as sir. I find that refreshing. Upon my arrival I was greeted at the main gate and asked for ID to enter the grounds, of course the guard asking me if I was wearing cargo pants did catch me off guard; I digress. A well stocked golf shop awaits the golfer who may have forgotten an item or is looking for something to elevate their game. Lines like Adidas, Nike, Page & Tuttle, and Cleveland/Srixon can be purchased at very competitive prices.
The course, well it just might be new favorite in the Naples area. I like to think of it as challenging yet fair. A shot maker will find themselves right at home as well as the new player who is struggling. Fairways aren’t overly tight, but there are most certainly proper and improper places to be. Green complexes are well designed in that there is not a harsh penalty on a little miss, but you have a tricky par save. The bunkering is strategic but not overly maddening. There is nothing worse than looking down a fairway and seeing a sliver of green running between wastelands of sand (I’m talking to you Mr. Watson). A few crossing bunkers illustrate the par 5’s beautifully and dare the long hitters to carry them. The par 3’s are a little on the long side, but I wouldn’t consider them totally unfair; perhaps a mixed tee option would be helpful though. The Par 4’s vary greatly, and that is lovely. Courses that have par 4’s that begin to run together are a disappointment, which is not the case at Forest Glen; each par 4 is a different animal.
I do not take my golf courses lightly; there are enough choices in my area that I can pick and choose. That said, very few courses that I have played would I consider playing every week, this is one of them. It is perfection in every way, a great design, marvelous conditions, and a friendly helpful staff. All of the factors combine to make Forest Glen Golf & Country Club the perfect golf experience.
