French Lick advice

I'm looking to book a buddies golf trip to French Lick, Indiana in early October. We're thinking of playing golf 4 days. Looking for advice from those who have been there before.

It looks like the Fence Lick Springs hotel may be able to be booked for a not ridiculous rate, but if prices were to get over say $250 a night, we'd probably look at staying off property, so if anyone has done that I'd love to hear your experience.

All input appreciated. Favorite courses? Logistics tips, etc.

I live about 90 minutes from there and have made the way up there a few times. Have yet to play golf up there though. When we went for an overnight trip once we stayed at a comfort inn (I believe) down the road and that worked out well. We were able to venture over and hit the casino and enjoy some of the things the resort has to offer. They have a mini bowling alley that was pretty fun. If I remember correctly there are quite a few package deals that combine staying at the course with a few rounds of golf if that is something you are interested in.
