Are you a fan of mob movies? I feel over the last 15-20 years they've been on a steep decline in terms of demand. The few that do get made often fizzle out with lackluster reviews.

What are some of your favorites?

Strictly production value, Godfather II can be watched over and over and over.

But I love Casino and Goodfellas.

I hadn’t really thought about this... but you’re right. I guess you could consider The Irishman part of that genre... but that wasn’t my favourite show.

I think A Bronx Tale is criminally underrated!

Definitely been few and far between lately. In 2009 I was able to work on the set when they filmed the mob movie “Chicago Overcoat” with Frank Vincent. Lower budget for sure and I don’t think the reviews were too kind😃

Wasn't the budget on that thing somewhere in the 1M range? I seem to recall knowing a few people involved with it. I wasn't even aware it had been released.

Google says it was 2 million. I never saw it at theater think it just came out on dvd later.

Huge fan. GF 1 and 2 are the benchmark. The Deaprted is the obvious exception to the trend you mention. I thought the Irishman was quite good but acknowledge it wasn’t for everyone.

Obviously Godfather 1 and 2, Goodfellas , Bronx Tale. The Pope of Greenwich Village is a classic and one that is a classic with Danny Aiello is 29th Street. If you like these movies you will love 29th Street. For some reason it doesnt get a lot of attention.

This has nothing to do with why I posted this thread, but I thought it was fun trivia:

On this date in 1987, "The Untouchables" was released.

(Brian) De Palma met with Bob Hoskins to discuss the role of Al Capone in case Robert De Niro, the director's first choice for the part, turned it down. When De Niro took the part, De Palma mailed Hoskins a check for his contracted fee of £20,000 with a "Thank You" note, which prompted Hoskins to call up De Palma and ask him if there were any more movies he didn't want him to be in.

De Niro's research for the role of Capone included reading about him and watching historical footage. He also wanted one extra scene written for his character, and time to finish his commitment to the Broadway production of "Cuba and His Teddy Bear". Lastly, he wanted to gain about 30 pounds (14 kg) to play Capone; according to De Palma, De Niro was "very concerned about the shape of his face for the part."

De Niro tracked down Capone's original tailors, and had them make him some identical clothing for the movie. He insisted on wearing the same style of silk underwear that Al Capone wore, even though it would never be seen on-camera. The producers, knowing De Niro's reputation as a method actor, gave in. (Wikipedia/IMDb)

Good Fellas is one of my favorites. Godfather 1&2, A Bronx Tale, The Departed are also very good.

This is goin way back with gangster movies and it's been awhile since I have watched them, but I always loved James Cagney's gangster movies.

The two genres I just am not a fan of are Westerns and Mob/Gangster movies.

Sure, there are exceptions that I will love watching, but in general I have seen all that can be done in these genres that I don’t bother watching their adaptations anymore.

I love gangster movies. My favorites:

Blow
Gangs Of New York
Pulp Fiction
The Departed
Snatch

I also love The Peaky Blinders as well, but that's TV.

I also think Godfather was boring. I watched the first two 7 or 8 years ago for the first time and I was extremely disappointed.

Goodfellas
The Departed
Donnie Brasco
Casino

I would love to see a movie about Sammy the Bull Gravano but not the over the top ass kiss movie like Gotti turned out to be.
I read Underboss when it first came out and got me hooked on mob stories.

Not a movie but The Sopranos.

Have to watch Godfather and Casino

I enjoyed reservoir dogs, Goodfellas, casino.

Someone mentioned blow and snatch, didn't see them as gangsters, but good movies.
