What would it take to convince you to change golf balls?
Is there something specific?
Is it strictly a numbers game?
Is it feel?
Hard to break habits?

(my neighbor made a change this weekend and had some mixed reviews about why and how come) I'm still Chrome Tour and loving it with my new irons, but there is always room for improvement.

What would make you change?

A lot of it is feel, but more so for me, it would come down to on-course performance. From the tee to the green, which ball consistently performs how I want it to.

One would argue I move around too much. I need to settle down with a ball.

By "too much" is it like 2-3 different balls. Or 10?

I have willingly changed numerous times this year out of pure curiosity.

It wouldn't take much to try something new. It would require notable improvement to cement it.

A ball that gave me exactly (or better) what I’m currently getting out of my ball.

Probably 3-4 a season.

I get curious but don’t quite play enough to warrant jumping around as much as I do. I feel like to jump that much I need to be on the course around 2 times a week.

Give me a ball that performs as well as my current ball but costs half as much and I'll switch in a heartbeat.

I’ve tried every ball the last couple of years and keep coming back to a ProV1X. Closest ball to get me to change is a Z-Star XV. Love the high flight of those balls, but they just don’t stop on the green like a ProV1X does. Chrome Tour X is really close, but it’s so close and I just like Titleist better than Callaway.

What would it take to convince you to change golf balls?
A change in wind direction. Seriously. Always urethane, but high spin down wind, low spin into the wind.

Specific performance differences. For me it’s primarily height and greenside spin.

It took me joining THP and stumbling across the Volvik XT Soft thread, then their insane sale to get me to switch as they were better than what I was gaming. Now it’s a numbers game working through my TM Tour Response and Pro V1 stock.

The Titleist ball experience convinced me to give in and find a ball with more spin ans higher flight and a fitting out me in the PV1X and I’ve been very happy with it. Long approach shots now hold greens. Chips stop faster. Still feels good.

I try a different ball once in a great while if I get gifted a sleeve or told to try this ball cause it is amazing but generally I stick to Chrome Softs. I did switch for quite a while when the Chrome Softs were feeling too soft but started playing them again last year as the newer releases feel a bit firmer to me.

Gotcha, and I semi agree. You don't really get the chance to say "yes this is it" if you're swapping a lot. The two balls I play are pretty similar, just depends which one I have. Maxflis are only sold at dicks/GG so if I run out and can't make it there, I keep a backup option.

At this point, having used Volvik XT Soft for about 6 months and really liking them, someone would have to give me many dozen to switch.

$118 my last 6 dozen. I'm just not paying more than double for a ball that won't be better than this one for me.

Primarily is feel off the putter.

Secondary, distance needs to be within 2-3 yards of my current ball when it comes to iron distances...

I was really fortunate to get selected for the THP 2025 Titliest Ball fitting event at Briggs earlier this year. I experienced first hand, how important the ball selection and fitting are. (I was well aware club fitting were important). We had nearly unlimited access to the best in the industry for 2.5 days and I walked away with a clear understanding of the ball selection and most importantly, the "why."

I learned that fitting short game first is the key. And I saw an immediate change in my short game performance with the new ProV1x.

So I only play the ProV1x now. It's actually been a great improvement to my game and the fact that I'm not all over the place with different balls makes life much simpler. I don't look at any ads or sales for this or that ball. No going back for this golfer!

Great question: To make a permanent change It would have to be a mix of better #'s and feel. Feel is probably #1 since I don't like a hard feeling ball.
Right now I have 3 balls that are in the rotation and depending on the day and weather I choose the best one.

There are so many balls that are good nowadays.

Either a significant change in performance, or equal performance for reduced cost.

I'm in the same boat. Went to the 2025 Titleist Golf Ball Event and got fit by Titleist into the Pro V1x. During the event they showed us the numbers, talked to us about what changed and why, and they went out with us on the course for 2 days and let the performance prove it to us. ProV1x is my ball.

Numbers and feel. I want the ball that best plays to my game but if I hate the feel that could be a real problem because that definitely will spill into your game. If the numbers are great but I feel like I’m hitting a rock that’s not gonna give me good feedback regularly when putting or swinging.

I am trying to stick with using just one ball, and right now it’s the QST. I typically have bounced around to whatever I was gifted or what was on sale. I was intrigued by the DSG sale over Memorial Day and picking up some maxfli’s as I’ve used them some in the past, but I decided to keep sticking with the Q stars.

A ball fitting would be something I’d be interested in the future to get rid of the guessing game of it all

I haven't found anything that beats the Srixon Z-Star. TP5 came the closest, but I still wouldn't change based on price as the Z is still a few bucks cheaper. I would need to see improvment from all areas of the game to change. So it needs to be longer, straighter, and stop better 100% of the time for me to change.

Curiosity tends to get the best of me with golf balls. I really like the Maxfli Tour, but was convinced enough to try the Chrome Tours which I equally like. I also want to try something out of the Srixon Z-Star lineup this year even though I really have everything I want in the Maxfli Tour
