I had a lesson today, and I feel like a proper swing will take a while for me to make consistently.

Let me explain…

IMG_5455.jpeg

I’ve learned how to get to top really good thanks to the GolfTec instruction. I’m missing the pool noodle on the way back and down.

IMG_5456.jpeg

Also thanks to GolfTec I can start the downswing in a decent position. But here is where I breakdown.

IMG_5457.jpeg

I’m supposed to pull the lead arm through, and finish out to right field, but I don’t do this consistently.

IMG_5458.jpeg

And there still is a flip to make contact with the ball.
This is away better actually than before I started going to GolfTec, but not where I want to be.

IMG_5451.jpeg

When I can do all the things: Take the club inside ➡️ Miss invisible pool noodle ➡️ Hold wrist as long as I can to my right pocket ➡️ straight left arm out to right field.

I can hit a 7 iron with a good result.

Another night trying to follow GolfTec's plan. Focusing on process and not outcome right now.

My 5 pack of lessons is over, Noah has given me a lot of drills to work on, and we discussed a possible reload of credits in October.

I had an hour practice session last night and another lesson coming up tomorrow. I went in and did my warm-up which felt really good. My face to pass was holding steady at about 3° closed, which is right where we wanted to be when we started the adjustment of my take away to get more into out in the face less closed to the path.

I am seeing a couple shots that takeoff straight right. Coach warned me that this will happen as I’m making these adjustments and told me not to worry that we’ll work on that if it becomes too prevalent. I see it on about 1 out of 10 shots. Overall not too bad and it has me feeling like I’m in a good spot before tomorrow’s lesson for whatever the next adjustment is.

I’m really happy that I see a lot less of the big pull hooks. Those were much further off off-line than anything I’m seeing flare out to the right now.

Lesson time!

They know its well past August 31st at that location, yeah?
Apparently not 😂. I’m waiting on my coach and asked the other guy at the desk. He said “oh crap”

Just wrapped up my lesson and my practice session. Wants to go over when I get home and get a chance to write it all out.

The one thing I wanted to touch on that’s been set a few times lately is how great the customer service is. The coaches at my center all really give me the feeling that they genuinely want me to get better at cough. They don’t come off as sales focused like I felt several years back the first time I visited a GolfTec. Tonight I had a 30 minute lesson followed by a 30 minute practice. My coach didn’t have another lesson after me and he was done for the day, but he sat in there through my entire practice, giving me feedback on the drills and pointing stuff out on video. He didn’t have to do that, but I could tell he was enjoying it. In today’s day of less than stellar customer service, and a lot of places, this is a very refreshing feeling.

Looking forward to your thoughts
I’m traveling most of the day today and have some obligations once I get home. I will give a little more detail in a post later tonight, but overall it was a really great experience.

I’m in Dallas for work, (don’t have a GolfTec within three hours of my home) and decided to take advantage of a GolfTec being 6 miles from the hotel.

First off, if anyone is on the fence on a swing eval, what are you waiting for? And any SkyTrak Core subscribers get a $75 promo credit. This is a no brainer.

The optimotion tech is outstanding. Having the skytrak software up on the screen was awesome since that’s what I’m used to seeing in the home sim. The bays at this location were set up like individual rooms so they were super private and you didn’t feel like the whole place was watching you shank golf balls. And the coaching coupled with the video analysis was really impactful.

I’ll post more when I get home with all the video and still shots from the training session. The ability to send all of the video from the session to the GolfTec app is an unmatched feature that set this apart from any other lesson I’ve had. I walked away with a lot of good info and targeted drills.

Glad you had a great experience and can't wait to hear more. The utilization of technology is what makes Golftec stand apart; having an hour's worth of notes, voice notes, video, and assigned drills from the coach after a swing eval should be enough for anyone. Even if you end up not getting lessons, you'll have a ton to chew on from just the swing eval.

Lesson 2 recap:

As I had thought from practice and a couple rounds, the work I was doing in the first lesson is really starting to stick. Lesson 1 Recap. My takeaway is looking good and my swing path is much more in to out, hanging out around 9°. The pull hooks are all but gone and the straight pushes are less and less common.

So the plan for lesson 2 is to expand on that takeaway and path progress. Jordan wanted to work with me on getting the face to path at about 4-5° closed. To do this, he saw that my shoulder bend was a little too far back. I was about 12-13° back and he wants me to get to about 5°.

Here’s my swing at the start
IMG_0749.jpeg

We got to work on this with a couple drills. First up was the thought and feel of being more upright at the top of the backswing. We did a drill with no club taking my address. I would lift my arms up and stand upright, do my turn, and feel that position.
IMG_0770.jpeg

IMG_0771.jpeg

As that started to feel comfortable, we did the club across the chest drill. I held my 7i and did my turn trying to match that more upright feel and have the club lined up with the 5i laying at my feet.
IMG_0768.jpeg
IMG_0769.jpeg

We did these drills for awhile then switched to swings without a ball. Those swings felt fantastic so we grabbed a ball to hit. This is where it went sideways. As soon as I had a ball down, my brain went right back to the old swing. Not near as bad, but I was no in the middle of the two motions and saw horrible results. On a positive note, Jordan said my positions were much better. I couldn’t see how this was possible but then saw the video, I could see it. My over the top move at the transition was gone!

Look at the hands falling down 🤯. Beginning swing on the left and end of session on the right.
IMG_0772.jpeg

Now I’ll admit, seeing my hands and body be in the “correct” position and getting a poor strike is frustrating. That being said, this feeling I think is mostly mental and me wanting to get back to hitting the ball. Jordan also found that there are some hip turn issues which will be what we work on next time. In the mean time, my practice plan is as follows:

1. Club across the chest drill 100 times per day for 3 days.

2. Standing up drill with the arms up 100 times per day for 3 days.

3. Start to incorporate hitting balls. Warm up with the club across the chest drill 5-10 times to get the feel. 3 dry swings with no ball. Hit one ball. 3 dry swings, hit one ball.

A bit rainy today, just booked a last minute 1 hr practice session. Found some things during my last practice session that helped me make a little better contact with irons yesterday. Need to tighten that up some more with some reps and feedback from the GC Quad.

Really excited for my first lesson on Monday! I've been champing at the bit to get started but I've been using the practice to stay fresh

Just did an hours practice focusing on path with irons. Something has happened to my swing where I'm delivering the clubface open at impact. I don't feel any different but I'm doing something weird for sure. Having the video and instant feedback is so freaking helpful. Oddly enough when I get the clubface more square all of my shots are starting off to the right.

I'm going to ask my coach on Monday to check my lie angles, wonder if there is something there. Also another nice little bonus of GolfTec, they can do that right there! I don't know if there is a cost involved though.

My first lesson is tomorrow, but my swing eval was 2 months ago. Coincidentally, my shot scope broke just before that. So today I got my first Shot scope round in and here is the difference:

I am hitting irons significantly better and that is in large part from the small changes made during the swing eval. Again, I haven't had a lesson yet. Getting my swing more inside and working to hit draws has done wonders for me and I have plenty of improvement left (especially off the tee). I fully expect to be in the low 80s next year. Heck, if I lost 2 balls instead of 8 today I would've been there. Golftec's claim for 7 strokes should be fairly easy and then some!

Haven’t hit a ball since Thursday but I did do my 100 reps on each drill Fri, Sat, and Sun. It feels good and I do feel like my dry swings are a 3/4 swing which is what my coach said it should feel like to me. I have my TopGolf league tonight. I’m hoping it translates to hitting balls

Aaaand lesson cancelled. Coach under the weather. Hope he feels better and I signed up for another day next week. I just want to get started!

Had an amazing session with my coach last night. I had emailed him prior to going to say I wanted to do a gapping session before heading out for the Morgan Cup. When he came in we talked about why and went from there. He also asked if I had an extra 30 mins to work on whatever else I thought we needed and thankfully I did yesterday.

So... first 30 mins we did the gapping session. Upon his suggestion I even pulled balls out of my bag to use gamer balls for readouts, distances and spin. We started with my 54* wedge and a ProV1x. Everything was about what I would expect from that in the yards and spin category. But then it gets weird. The next club up is my Cobra 50* King X wedge. It launches higher than my 54 and spin immediately jumps into too much range as I suspected causing distances to be shorter than expected. So we switch to Chrome Tour. Instantly the launch and spin rates dropped more in normal ranges and yardage was about what I expected. This was pretty cool to see in real time.

From there we went to PW, 9i and 8i. I've been noticing some issues on the course with clubs not going quite as far and we determined that the pw/9i was launching too high. He went and measured the 9i and 8i and found while the 8i was spot on in the 2* weak that I ordered the 9i was 2.5* weak. The distance gap as you will see below is significant though so we are thinking on the 9i and pw that they probably only needed to be 1* weak to gap properly. While he said he could do it there, he said he really didn't like their machine and didn't want to mark up my clubs so we left it alone.
IMG_0984.jpg

After we were done with that we did some wedge work on shots inside 100 yards with different clubs as well as some even shorter more greenside shots working on shoulder sway and posture. Its going to take some practice to get where I need to be and don't really want to mess with much heading into the Morgan Cup but this was a really great lesson.

We scheduled an outdoor lesson for when I return in a few week to work on these things outdoors on grass. Really looking forward to seeing where we can go over the winter months. For now, I'm dialed in and ready to go.

Had my first lesson since coming back from GrayBull last night. Got there early for a practice session to get loose and reacquaint myself with Golftec as it has been awhile since I've been in. Talked to my coach about the trip and how everything went. I told him that I've started losing shots off to the right a bit lately and we went through my swing to try and diagnose the issue. Pretty quickly he noticed that I was coming in too steep and not keeping the club shallow or "hitting out to right field" like I should be.

Worked on keeping my left arm more across my chest and for longer during the downswing to promote getting the club more shallow during the swing. Tried to really make sure on the backswing that when I get to the "top" of my swing that I don't need to lift my hands even further up as that takes me out of position to drop them in the backswing.

Basically when I get to this position I don't need to go up higher like I do in the second photo. In the video I can also see myself push the club out instead of dropping my hands in the swing. This causes a little bit of an over the top move which also causes me to push the ball out further to the right.

Gave me a drill of working on a more staggered stance to promote the out to in path before we wrapped up the lesson. Spent another 15 minutes or so using up some practice time to work on what we discussed.

Have my next lesson and practice sessions set up for next Monday, and have a round on Saturday where I'll be working to incorporate what we discussed.

Here’s a little more detail on my swing eval completed last week.

First we will focus on the good things. My set up was pretty good. No changes to anything at address. All the optimotion values were green or blue. Take away was also pretty good with the only item to work on was a little more hip rotation.

The downswing is where the problems start. I’ve always fought a left to right ball flight. The main culprit is I extend way too early and move my hips toward the ball, forcing me to loose shoulder angle and leave no space for my hands at impact.

IMG_9474.jpeg

You can see how far my hips have moved off the green line on my back side, causing me to be more upright and flip hands through. I also loose almost all shoulder tilt at impact and follow through. You can see how Zack Johnson barely comes off that green line during the swing and his right shoulder is working down through the ball.

So, we worked ways to keep my weight on the heels, improving footwork and weight transfer and also worked on getting the needed shoulder angle/tilt through the swing.

IMG_9472.jpeg

You can see my 56 degree wedge under my right heel. The purpose was to reinforce keeping my weight back on the heel longer, keeping me off my toes and moving toward the ball, and to feel weight move to the left heel.

Before and after are below. You can see my shoulder tilt increased by 16 degrees with the target value being anything over 40.

IMG_9476.jpeg

My coach gave me several other drills to work on, most involve slow swing motions without a ball. The purpose is to focus on shoulder tilt and keeping hips back on the “butt board” to give my hands space to allow for in to out swing and proper arm extension through impact, and to improve footwork for better balance at the finish.

Still a lot of work to do, but I saw some promise on the course this past Sunday. A lot less left to right movement and some shots with much better ball strikes.

I think what stands out the most to me is the immediate data feedback you get with optimotion. For the coach to say “that’s better” is one thing, but to be able to give a value to show how much better is impactful. Also having all the video on the app with notes, audio from the lesson and videos with targeted drills is such a huge benefit when using GolfTec.

I love seeing all these breakdowns of lessons and swing evals @jdtox @Nashtyone @Jtubb17 !!

@cringjr pretty crazy how much keeping your trail heel down can change a swing, isn't it? I have been working through the same issue and the difference in path and power is astounding from focusing on that small thing. Love the breakdown of the swing eval it seems like it showed you a few small things that will make a big impact!

Hit my first balls last night at league since my lesson last week. Everything felt really good and I was seeing the flight I want to see. I have a practice session today so it’ll be nice to get some swings on camera. Have to check that feel vs real..

I was really pleased with the results. The second half of the session being a lesson to really focus on the “how” to fix versus the “what “ to fix was great.

And having a skytrak+ at home is going to help me groove this swing change a lot sooner. I plan to set up my phone and use the GolfTec app swing record feature as well.

From my first go at lessons with Golftec that was one of the things I like the most. Here is how you fix the issue so if it creeps back in over time you know the changes to re-implement.
