What’s the practice focus today?
Reinforcing the lesson from Tuesday. Incorporating the trail arm, keeping the elbow in, feeling like tossing a ball with it. If contact is there then making sure it can go in the intended direction

Started the practice with some one armed swings but I think I need to do more. When I'm on a timer something in me says "you need to make the most of this time hitting balls" and that's just silly. I'll have a space set up at my house to practice non-ball (and ball!) work very soon so that'll be less of an issue.

Need to continue doing external rotation stretching on the shoulder too. That will take time. But I'm having a hard time practicing this aspect on me own. Hard to feel, but at least I can see it on the camera.

Now the throw motion is coming along nicely. All of this together is accumulating more power than I know what to do with (which admittedly wasn't a concern before) but also producing a fade instead of a draw. For the short term I'm going to lean into it, but long term want to get back to drawing the ball.

Here's a "too good" hollow body 6 iron

I don't think I've seen ball speed like that before and definitely haven't had that club speed before.

Looking forward to getting back to the coach and drilling it more. I keep threatening it and starting in December I think I may do once a week lessons. I just like getting that reinforcement week to week.

I had my swing evaluation with my coach, Cole.

We started out talking about where my game is now, what I think I need help with and what my end goal is. I was like, hopefully you don't totally tear down my swing down and we can just tweak my current swing.

Today was 7i swings to get a baseline.

swing eval before 2 take half step back.PNG

My setup was not too bad. He just noted that I am standing a little close so we moved back a half step (make yellow box slightly bigger). Arms and spine were in a good posture today. I am coming over the top and getting too armsy. I have the strength to make armsy work but need to work on rotating my hips more.

swing eval before 3 over the top.PNG

You can see my club head in the red box which creates the out to in swing. Ideally you want to be in between the lines, green box. I need to work on turning my shoulders and hips more.

swing eval before 5 steep down swing.PNG

At the top of the swing my hands stay up (red box) so then I would have a steeper down swing (red line).
I need to work on trying to get my hands lower (green box) / left arm flatter.

swing eval before 7 shoulder turn.PNG

During the downswing my shoulders turn too quickly laterally/across instead of down and out.

swing eval cafter 1 better back swing.PNG

The pool noodle came out and we worked on keeping my backswing in more through the entire swing. We started with some slow, slow swings to get the feel and it was definitely weird.

swing eval cafter 2 after contact.PNG
I need to work on following through after contact to keep the arms straight out.

I am getting better with the takeaway and downswing, just need to work more on the follow through position.

I'm excited to get this journey started, finally.

YMMV but my local GolfTecs will be running the deals below starting Sat 11/1

Practice really carried to the course today. 54° wedge was used confidently from 25yds to a pin over the bunker all the way back to 75yds out. I was much better on distances after the last practice session. Direction still needs a bit of work, especially on the shorter ones where I open the face but overall very happy.

Also noticed lots of balls checking up nicely. Couple of the longer wedges zipping back even. Guess my wedges weren’t the problem all this time. I just finally learned to hit them correctly!

Practice session tonight (11.3.25) to work on hip rotation, backswing and downswing.
Swing Evaluation

I did a few one handed swings, some super slow swings (they feel so weird), 3/4 swings and full swings.

I was using the slower speed swing to help focus on balance and tempo to help with rushing at the top. During the slower swings I also exaggerated swinging to the right to try and help promote an in to out path.

I tried a few pauses at the top of my back swing then lowering my hands and arms towards my trail side hip to help the upper body from opening too early.

Still over the top a little on down swing

I started to get a little better with the back swing (stay in between the yellow lines) but still coming in over the top on the down swing.

Over all, the practice session today helped a bit. One hour flies by when your messing around.

I like how you’re practicing with the lines to see your positioning and the numbers to get the same feedback as in the lesson.

It definitely helps when using the Practice Button Box to replay your swing vids. Just don't hit button 1 by accident after a good swing. 😄

The new era of the Canadan tee game begins next Monday morning.
Buckle up, friends - it's going to get emotional.

I absolutely love the slow swing logic for your move. Going to calm down a lot of the stuff we talked about at GB.

That's awesome. Glad you're utilizing the practice.

Absolutely. Slowing the swing down definitely helps but feels weird all together. I'm getting better at it though.

The wedge lesson and practice have really helped. I chipped in today from a spot I would normally have just putted just off the green. I hit the pin on another one from 32y. Both with the 54° and just feeling confident with it.

The best part is that the wedges are something I went into this knowing I needed help with. After three lessons and a round that I really struggled with the wedges only, my coach was willing to jump around in the game plan to help me with something that was extra frustrating.

It’s great to have a coach that feels invested in my improvement and not just set on “we have to follow the path.” I think that’s a big thing to know for anyone looking at signing up for the lessons. Yes they are expensive and yes, they will set out a roadmap during the swing evaluation. That is not set in stone though. They want you to play better golf and enjoy doing it.

Really good lesson today.
Worked on my balance and getting my weight shift a little better and following with my belt buckle towards the target, not afterwards.
I was hitting the ball really well

Today's practice really reinforced what I've been working on the past week by showing up in my swing.

Last week's lesson focused on incorporating the trail hand for power and getting into the proper position. This means trying to keep the trail elbow in during the backswing and then getting that throwing motion with the trail hand. I started the practice session by swinging a wedge choked down with my trail hand. First making sure the hinge is correct, then halfway in the backswing, then 3/4 max. For most people their trail hand is their dominant hand, for me it is not. It felt awkward at first, but in this short time I have got some additional strength and familiarity with the motion.

I want to brush the ground nicely with that a few times one handed and, on a lark, added a ball into the mix. To my surprise, I could lob em out there not too bad. It will improve over time too. I moved through various irons, trying out a few heads that are available in store, and finished with driver. What I have found is through technique and not effort I have added 2-7 mph to my clubhead speed. Previously I would cruise a 7i at 85-88mph, now it's 88-95mph. Driver was 102 tonight I saw it at 109. Small change, huge impact. In fact, I believe I caught my first recorded 160 ball speed drive, which came right after a 159 ball speed drive.

Really grinded today. I've been struggling with longer clubs. So we spent time hitting 5i and driver. Need to remember to recenter with the irons. The feeling of a closed face in the down swing, especially with the driver, feels so counter intuitive. By the end of the session the good shots got darn good and the bad shots weren't horrific, actually quite good.

160!!!

Let's go! That's a big number.

160!!!

The most important part of that is there was no over swing. There was no effort. It was all technique and smooth. That means I'm theory whenever I find that feel again it's on course relatable.

Swing changes are hard. I'm an over thinker on the course so it's been difficult to score lately, but that's okay and part of the process. The added speed has also made me realize I need to do a new distance check on the bags. Was long a few too many times today.

that's exciting!!! It's funny how much less energy is expelled when you're putting an efficient move on the ball. It's almost like it's.. easier lmao

Glad to see other folks improving their game with GolfTEC. I'm been taking lessons and using their facilities for practice. I started late on my golf journey, so the coaching, practice, and visuals helped a lot.

A lot easier. So much so it's easy to forget and go back to putting in effort and making it all go to sh** again 🤣

Same on starting late. When did you start? What kind of improvement have you seen on the course? What are you working on now?

I started playing about 3 years ago. Been with GolfTEC a little more than 1.5 years and my handicap dropped to 19-20. I think it could be even lower if I play smarter and less aggressive on the course. The challenging part with GolfTEC is the limited outdoor coaching, so learning to chip and hitting out of bunker is limited.

My form and ball striking improved enormously. It's definitely noticeable on the course. My dispersion is tighter, so the ball stays in play and I'm losing less balls. Most importantly, my misses are still moving the ball forward and in play!

We have been working on my swing path and early release. My swing path is too inside and I release the club too early. I tend to overdraw and launch high. I cannot hit a cut or fade with my irons.

That's awesome to hear you've had success and continue to improve! Seeing progress through not only the lens of scores dropping but as "the bad stuff" not being as bad is really important and easily forgotten. Was just saying to a friend today after a particularly stinky round that it had been a while shooting in the high 90s, but it's still better than shooting in the 100s like I used to. Keep up the great work!

Feeling really good about where my few lessons have taken me. Played in the AZ THP league championship this weekend and shot 10 shots better from last year. Followed that up with my best score at @mtbloco ’s course by 7 shots today.

Two hour countdown.

I'm so excited to see what comes of this. I am SO desperate for someone to find the crux of this issue and bring me back to what I believe I am capable of.
