the slo mo swings help tremendously. just remember, everyone swing is not the same. if having your elbow out and away works; swing away. handicap dropping engaged.
Yep. I think this is a big thing for anyone considering GOLFTEC lessons to know about. Their teaching philosophy seems to embrace the fact that everyone’s swing is going to be a little different. They use data and visuals to compare you to the pros but not to change your swing. They want to help you become more repeatable and reliable so you can golf better. Putting your best swing on the ball at a more consistent rate is going to make golf more fun. That’s what they want for you, not to turn you into an Adam Scott robot clone.

I was doing a half hour practice session to do a wedge matrix and while I was loosening up the other coach popped his head in because he saw my Lions shirt and wanted to say "f**k the Packers" because he's a Bears fan and then asked what I was working on. I told him I was doing a matrix but also working on consistent takeaway and he watched a few swings. He reminded me to get the head back on more of a radius and to give my front knee a bit more bend to help flatten out my shoulder sway. (This was something my coach mentioned during my evaluation). In just those two minutes I went from this

That put me in better position to put good consistent swings throughout the matrix. I love how willing the guys at my location are to pop in and give quick pointers even without an active lesson plan.

He also taught me how to remove these lines that are left over from my eval.

Your location sounds a lot like mine. Everyone always willing to pop in and give advice or even just talk golf when I’m done. The coaches really do go above and beyond to make you feel like they’re invested in your improvement.

Looking forward to my lesson tonight. Topics for discussion with coach:
Different feels for eliminating the early extension
Taking divots more consistently on course
Losing all semblance of what I am doing on the course vs range

I lied. My lesson is tomorrow. I learned this by showing up and my coach looking at me quizzically hahaha. Fortunately they had a bay so I got a half hour of work in and it wasn't a wasted trip.

Focus was on early extension, per usual. Trying a bunch of feels to see if I can reign it in. Feet placement (narrow, lead flare, lead slightly back), lead hip feeling like it's pulling back, different drills, etc etc.

Literal last swing of the day I recalled something my old coach suggested: throw your trail shoulder at the ball.

1000014510.jpg

Not bad actually. It's all a system right? My hips react because the body feels like it needs to in order to get to the ball. So trying ways to encourage that, even if counter intuitive since it's not lower body related, can help. Throwing the shoulder should in theory keep me a bit more over the ball and encourage not standing up. It was one swing. Could just be lucky, but I'll explore it more tomorrow.

had a lesson a few days ago and this time, we focused on the “elbow span” aka the distance between your elbows through your the swing. For this lesson, we specifically focused on the elbow span from set up to club parallel on back swing. I tend to widen my elbows as I take the club back. This ends up putting me in a place where it is hard to get my hands through and limits my shoulder turn. We broke out a new to me training aid, the tour striker smart ball. I have been having a bit of a hard time transitioning half swing drills to full swings so it was nice to be able to use a training aid that works for both half swing and full swings. I will say, it was a lot harder to keep the ball between my arms than it looks on random Instagram videos I’ve seen in the past. It also puts me in a much different place in my back swings which makes me feel like it’s actually changing something (and for the better). I was also surprised how the trainer helped with another area I’ve been focusing on which is not flipping my wrists in follow through.

I had a 30 minute practice afterwards, but I made the mistake of doing an intense work out before the lesson and my swing went to garbage halfway through the practice.

I feel like the difference doesn’t look major but it definitely felt a lot different. Talking to my coach, it does seem like we are doing more of a full swing renovation. It’s not a full start from scratch, but definitely a multi step, multi lesson change. It is challenging as my lessons have made my shots “worse”, however, I am encouraged that we are moving in the right direction and these changes will benefit me even more greatly in the long run. That is a nice part about having a larger pack of lessons as well as doing them in the off season. We can really focus on building lasting fixes even if it momentarily f’s up my shots.

One swing truth bombs are dangerous 😂. When you get a ‘last swing of the day’ like this, how do you decide whether it’s legit or just the golf gods messing with you?

You mentioned half swings translating better with this than other drills. Did you notice that it helped your tempo into full swings, or was it more about keeping structure in the takeaway?

Doing those half swings is something that’s really helped me. Personally I view it more as a tempo reset which works for my over swinging issue.

More with keeping structure. I mostly notice issues with drills with abbreviated finishes. The last drill I had, I would stop with club pointed at target (ish). The drill would go great but then once I introduced a full swing, the progress went out the window.

And honestly, I feel like the training aid somewhat helps the transition from half to full swings, but even more so, I think the idea behind the aid (closer elbow span) is what’s helping. I haven’t thought of the idea of half swings as helping with tempo but that seems really useful

By trying it out today, of course!

Was the only person at the theatre today so I decided to “work from home” and rescheduled my Friday practice to this afternoon. Something I noticed while running through video for each swing was my feet. I couldn’t figure out what I was doing differently from last time that was causing my shoulders to fly. Well…

IMG_9607.jpeg

IMG_9608.jpeg

My feet are stupidly out in 2nd position (this is a dance term.)

So I focused on making sure I was properly set and grounded before and during the swing and boom.

IMG_9610.jpeg

Numbers went green and stayed in that range through the rest of the round.

I’m also keeping a note on all the things I’m noticing so when I do finally add on the pack I have things to talk about more in depth as we work on a plan.

Excellent job using the video playback to catch the issue and seeing the instant feedback when you make the change!

It's really helpful. Sure, I end up hitting less balls in a 30 minutes session because I'm stopping to review things. But I'd rather take 15 meaningful swings where I feel like I'm improving something over mindlessly hitting balls down a virtual range any day.

So much truth to this. One of the best “lessons” that I’ve learned is practicing with a purpose.

Another great lesson in the books and I'll do a full write up tomorrow. Still trying to figure out how to kill early extension and I think we're getting closer. It's so frustrating to tell you body to do something and have it not listen lol. But that's why coaches are there. That's why video is there. That's why practice is available.

Here's one of the best from today after the lesson.

Lesson recap time! Going into this lesson I am working on a ton of stuff, trying to find feels, really searching. I talked to my coach about this and at the beginning of the process I said I was comfortable with more of an overhaul than some people would be, and that's still true. He also mentioned that we are going after big changes now because it's the off season; if this were March, we would be doing small tweaks. But it aint March so we are working on big stuff!

Before swing: honestly one of my better looking swings. Love the move, but there are problems https://gt.golf/Qi8S16
I still lose wrist position at the top which leads to inconsistencies
1766596997781.png

I let the club get ahead of my hands which leads to the hook. A lot of this happens and my trail arm gets stuck behind my body and has no where to go so the hands try and save it.
1766597057827.png

I finish way high (which is a problem for another day), and despite this being a good one, I suffer from early extension more often than not.

To address the early extension we are trying a trail foot flare. This is to help feel the inside foot push. You can see the difference between the swing above and with the flare below. Notice the trail leg has a lot more extension. Like, a lot.

1766597218763.png

This also creates more torso engagement and getting down better on the ball
1766597290366.png

We really want to lengthen that trail leg in the downswing. Look at lefty Rory vs me here on my good one

1766597355878.png

This is something I will keep an eye on during practice. I was quick to throw away any video replay that had my trail heel leaving the ground, but the reality is some amount of lift isn't a bad thing so long as it's a lateral push rather than my knee and hips moving towards the ball.

The next thing we worked on were the flippy hands. I have a very fast overtake rate meaning my club overtakes my hands very early in the swing. What we want is this nice line:
1766597531360.png

This is all a system; every thing affects everything. So on top of impact position, we also worked on how to work the hands. We talked a bit about it last time with the G Snap aid, trying to John Rahm the backswing, but we need to continue that through impact. In the down swing we need to crank it (title of @MtlJeff latest video). Really focus on turning the handle to get the club into a square position without needing to flip at it to save the swing.

This will all take time to really get a feel for it. Working on a lot of stuff at once: early extension, not getting flippy, crankin' it. But put it all together and we'll have something worthy of spring season. Next practice session is Fri and looking forward to continue grinding.

Really dig seeing the progress in here. Having the videos to see what's going wrong/right is such a cool thing. For those of you that are taking/have taken lessons at GolfTEC, if you had to give one reason why someone should go there over any other instructor, what would you say?

For me it’s OptiMotion. You can get lessons and get data. You can get lessons and get video. Being able to get all of it combined from OptiMotion is beyond what you can get elsewhere. Throw in the fact that you have access to the parameters set in your homework by your coach when you have a practice session, and GOLFTEC offers something above and beyond.

@FlipFlop nailed it. The technology sets them apart. Between the camera with optimotion and the lesson clips there's so just much more available to the student than going a traditional route.

The technology definitely gives GOLFTEC a huge advantage. Though you still have to find the right instructor for you, one that you can communicate with effectively cause without that you won’t get full advantage.

That's where my mind went initially with what I've seen and what I experienced with the swing evaluation. The tech they have is pretty sweet, and OptiMotion is pretty freaking cool and helpful.

I'm glad you mentioned finding the right instructor. This is something I've struggled with as I've looked around for where to take lessons. I had a good experience with the instructor I worked with on my swing evaluation, so I'm hopeful when I get to be able to do lessons I can work with him. He did a really good job of explaining things in a way that made sense, breaking down what the data and cameras were capturing, and giving me a good feel of what good should be. From what I've seen in here, it seems like they have a lot of good instructors at the different places folks in here have been working with, which I think is pretty notable and impressive.

I agree that GolfTec has a lot of good instructors and their tech makes them even better. I have been to 3 different instructors over the last 2 years. The first was good but he moved on to another opportunity. The second was not a good communicator and I didn’t feel he had a good idea of how to maximize the GolfTec systems, I think he knew the swing but couldn’t describe how to adjust to get where he wanted me.

The third guy was great, and I need to figure out some financial stuff to be able to get back to work with him.

Today marked the last lesson and practice session of my Golftec package I purchased in the beginning of the year. For the record, I started off the year hitting weak 130 years 7 irons with an in 8-12* outside/in over the top swing. In the last session, we worked on this drill where I put an alignment stick in my belt loops and use the stick to push my arm into the ball instead of swinging with my arms only. The result was a mostly level swing with a 2* in to our, or out to in. Either way, a huge improvement over what I was hitting before.

Here is a video of the drill. I am an a much better position throgh the swing, and using my lower body more.

Here are he results of the work this year. These are my new 7 iron distances and numbers. Face is a bit more shut at impact hence the ball moving left, but it is a whole lot better than I started out with.

Overall it was a good experience and I am going to take what I learned and try to apply it when I play and practice. Almost all of my work was about my takeaway and swing path. I know it sounds like a lot of what makes up the swing, but I did stuggle at times with my instructor telling me to "just trust him", and he will show my the rest later. I do wish he had started with smaller tweaks and worked to build on that. More like retrofitting a building, as opposed to wanting to tear it all down and rebuild it from scratch; which is what if felt like at times. I think he even said we were going to start from scratch in the beginning. I guess if the foundation is wonky, you kind of have to start over.

I don't regret going through this one bit. In terms of cost, it is basically less than a new set of irons, or about the cost of a new driver and fairway at the rate of today's prices. I am going to take a bit of a break from the lessons and work on the stuff I have learned so far before trying to cram any more swing thoughts in my little brain.

It was a long road to get here and I have a lot more work to put in, but Im looking forward to what 2026 is gonna bring.

I second what they all said. Having access to the Optimotion along with the launch monitor data is a game changer. It paints an undeniable picture if your swing and what you are doing despite what you are absolutely convinced you "think" you are doing.

Also, as @TWright said, finding the right instructor is key. I liked my instructor and I did finally get some good results, but also did not feel like I really connected with him.

I really want to try this drill as it helps with early extension too and I think it'll force me to slow down and take some 50% shots. Really happy for your progress would love to play with you again and see it live!
