Today marked the last lesson and practice session of my Golftec package I purchased in the beginning of the year. For the record, I started off the year hitting weak 130 years 7 irons with an in 8-12* outside/in over the top swing. In the last session, we worked on this drill where I put an alignment stick in my belt loops and use the stick to push my arm into the ball instead of swinging with my arms only. The result was a mostly level swing with a 2* in to our, or out to in. Either way, a huge improvement over what I was hitting before.

Here is a video of the drill. I am an a much better position throgh the swing, and using my lower body more.

Here are he results of the work this year. These are my new 7 iron distances and numbers. Face is a bit more shut at impact hence the ball moving left, but it is a whole lot better than I started out with.

Overall it was a good experience and I am going to take what I learned and try to apply it when I play and practice. Almost all of my work was about my takeaway and swing path. I know it sounds like a lot of what makes up the swing, but I did stuggle at times with my instructor telling me to "just trust him", and he will show my the rest later. I do wish he had started with smaller tweaks and worked to build on that. More like retrofitting a building, as opposed to wanting to tear it all down and rebuild it from scratch; which is what if felt like at times. I think he even said we were going to start from scratch in the beginning. I guess if the foundation is wonky, you kind of have to start over.

I don't regret going through this one bit. In terms of cost, it is basically less than a new set of irons, or about the cost of a new driver and fairway at the rate of today's prices. I am going to take a bit of a break from the lessons and work on the stuff I have learned so far before trying to cram any more swing thoughts in my little brain.

It was a long road to get here and I have a lot more work to put in, but Im looking forward to what 2026 is gonna bring.
Well done - congrats on the progress

Great job on the progress and great feedback. Do you feel like it was his method that made things go that way, or that he saw something in your swing he felt like needed to be corrected to get to better? Did he give you a chance to share how you wanted to approach things or just go into how he wanted to change things? Glad things helped and you don't regret it, but I could see how that could be frustrating.

My swing evaluation ended up with some focus on takeaway and swing path as well. He was able to really effectively communicate to me what I was doing and how it related to the issues I was having. I really appreciated this, and while a start from scratch scares the buhjeezus out of me, he made me comfortable in understanding why things needed to change. That was one of the things that impressed me most. Other instructors I have gone to had more of a "just trust me" approach which was a bit of a turn off.

Is there any particular drill they gave you that you found most helpful?

Snuck out of work for a 30 min practice session which always conveniently turns into an hour. Focusing on a lot of elements and still struggling with a lot of it, but chipping away at progress which is encouraging. I am finding that being more relaxed at address is helpful and hit some really nice shots. When I go to video I still pick out issues that I am working through, but that is the beauty of GolfTec honestly. Without the video on some of the shots I wouldve said "I solved it" never being able to see the what's happening. Video doesn't lie and good results can come from persistent issues still.

Back on track with the lessons tomorrow night. Going to finally do a lesson on the top of the bag since we got sidetracked last time. Really looking forward to seeing how we can tweak driver, 3W, and if we can get anything more out of the 2h.

Great job on the progress and great feedback.
Thank you.

Do you feel like it was his method that made things go that way, or that he saw something in your swing he felt like needed to be corrected to get to better?
I want to be fair to the instructor. I have/had a very faulty swing. When I was younger, I got away with a lot just because I was more athletic and could swing the club faster. I clearly needed help and my swing worked out. I may be a bit jaded because before my series with Golftec, I only had one 30 minute lesson in life, but that instructor had me flashing my 5 iron in that 30 minutes. That was a long time ago, and maybe he just got lucky with the right drill that clicked for me at the time. I really could not afford to continue with lessons at that time, and I was not that serious abut golf either.

Did he give you a chance to share how you wanted to approach things or just go into how he wanted to change things?
I did tell him that I was just looking for my swing to be "serviceable" and was not sure I wanted to commit to a full overhaul. He said that is not what they do there and that I really needed to rebuild. He was fine with my grip and setup, but that was all. :ROFLMAO:

Glad things helped and you don't regret it, but I could see how that could be frustrating.
Yeah, it was really frustrating because it took me so long to see any results. Like I said, it wish the changes were more incremental. It was so discouraging to watch my swing regress because I was trying to implement the changes, but not seeing any results. All the while still playing more golf, and even trying to get ready for the WWG event.

That is where the Golftec system with the videos and feedback really helps with the trust and visualization.

The alignment stick in the belt loops really helped, along with dreaded pool noodle to make sure I was swinging low and from the inside. I think those to drills resonated with me more because it was so less structured where the earlier lessons were abut bring to get my into the "correct" positions at each point of my swing.

I think if you have a good instructor you can trust you are half way there. The other part I would say is that you kinda have to commit to the getting worse part before it gets better. In hindsight, I should the played less golf, and spend more time on the drills and practicing but that is a tall order ... I just love playing.

Good luck on your journey. I hope you get where you are looking to go.

Have an hour of practice Friday and on top of the things I am working on I want to focus on shortening my swing. I think the long backswing is leading to a lot of these problems and may help click things into place by taking a 3/4 swing (which will really be a full swing for most people). Sometimes watching youtube videos helps if you notice the right things

Lesson 8 is in the books and this one was all about the driver. We’ve been holding off on this because I’ve been hitting driver better than I ever have. Now while that’s true, I also do go through some rough patches of inconsistency and the dreaded two way miss.

We started off taking a look at my current swing. What we noticed in the swing today is that I was leaving the face open to the target about 5° on average. Not bad but with my path in to out at around 3°, I was missing a lot to the right. The thing that jumped out to my coach as a potential cause of leaving the face open is my shoulder tilt at the top of the swing being too much. I was at 20-22° of shoulder tilt and the goal is to get down to 14-16°.

You can see a comparison here at the top of my backswing. My shoulder tilt is at the 20° mark causing more shoulder bend a d my head dipping towards the ball. This is causing a lot of my heel strike issues and my flippy weak pull fades.
IMG_2359.jpeg

We wanted to work to get me feeling more upright in the swing. Get my head to stay in the circle and even see my ear move away from the ball. Almost exaggerating the feeling by coming away from the ball. This was damn near impossible for me to do so we got out the noodle. Once my coach was there with the noodle behind me to avoid, major change in the backswing angles.
IMG_2342.jpeg

Now this is a huge exaggeration of the move but I need it to get more balanced.
IMG_2343.jpeg

You can see that we get my head moving more up with the noodle vs at the ball without.
IMG_2347.jpeg

And if you look at the first swing on the right, you can see the arms extended and the heel strike. Looking at the alignment with the noodle on the left and the “impact” (no I wasn’t really hitting the ball) position on the left, I’m more centered. That new takeaway hit the numbers I was targeting.
IMG_2344.jpeg

The last piece of the change we’re making is the exit path of the club. On the right in the original swing, it’s coming out lower and left. A recipe for a pull slice. In the new swing on the left, it’s moving up and coming out the lead shoulder. We looked at several of the pros who are great with driver (Rory, Xander, Rahm) and saw that same exit position. Who wouldn’t want to hit drives like them?
IMG_2345.jpeg

I stuck around and practiced for awhile after the lesson without the noodle. I quickly fell right back to the old swing. This is a move that’s going to be a tough one to change. I have some drills to work on. During practice sessions at GOLFTEC or at home.

1: I need to record my swing. I have to stand in front of a wall that I can put a piece of tape behind my head. If it shows up, my head went forward and I am bad. If it stays hidden, I’m staying back where I need to be and making progress.

2: second is a hand path/trail elbow drill. I tend to keep my hands very low and my trail elbow really tucked in on the takeaway. I’m going to be working on getting the hands higher and letting that trail elbow come out in the takeaway. This will free up my shoulders from feeling like they need to dip at the ball to get more turn and space in the backswing.

It’s a tough change but one I happily welcome to get me more consistency.

That's pretty freaking neat and really interesting to see. I can see some things I should check myself on in there. good stuff, thanks for sharing! Sounds like a tough move to work on, but I dig the drills he gave you to work on it. second drill sounds interesting. Are you meaning higher at the top of your backswing or some other point?

I am trying to re-read the thread and am on October 2024! If I get my expected bonus, I am buying the 10 lesson package. 2026 I am trying to get better. If I get jelly of the month club instead of bonus, YouTube videos will continue to tear me down 🤪

Getting my hands higher at the top by getting them moving more upwards sooner. I tend to keep my hands flat moving back and around which leads to the bend at the top to get the hands up. You can see it in this swing video

Yes!. Shortening my back swing really helped me with my weight transfer and contact. I kept thinking that I needed to take a bigger swing for the ball to go farther. I can actually generate more speed with better mechanics and the better contact also helps the ball go farther.

Also, when I say "shorter", I mean that I think 25% and it actually is a full swing and turn when recorded and watched back at Golftec.

ahh that makes perfect sense, and yes, you can totally see that. That also helps me as it ties to what I was told in my swing eval, so kind of neat to see and I will be interested to follow your progress as you work on it!!

Golftec optimotion does a great job of showing the difference between feel and real. Now I know the real time to go find the feel

It’s crazy how much they can see in the quick swing evaluation that helps form the road map

Yeah, what I got in my swing evaluation was super helpful and I'm still working the drills they gave. Definitely see improvement just from that little bit so very much curious what I could accomplish with even more help.

Had really frustrating practice session on Fri and a lesson tomorrow. The cameras help so much to show you what's working and what's not. Currently we are in the 'not' category haha. We will continue to work on finding a way to kill early extension. I'm still struggling to find a full speed transition from the top of the backswing that doesn't involve my trail knee popping forward. But that's why we have great coaches and tech, right?

At least you know what you are doing wrong so that you can get it fixed. That's huge in of itself. Keep up the good work. You will get there! Lool forward to hearing how the lesson goes!

I had every intention of doing this last year. Life through me curveballs, knuckleballs, and fastballs up by the chin. This year will be different. I am still on page 65 of this thread trying to catch up but at least jumped on the $95 evaluation. After reading this thread, I will not book lessons unless I book practice sessions with it.

Love to see this and look forward to hearing how it goes for you. I was super impressed by my swing eval. Hope yours is as eye opening as mine was.

Congrats on taking the leap!

I've been on a bit of an unintentional hiatus through the holidays and it's been frustrating.

I'll be diving back in head first come next Monday. Might need to see about setting up a practice session before then to work on the things I left in 2025.

Love to see you jumping in on this! I’m 100% taking credit for it in one way or another 😂

Lesson tonight. Looking to continue chipping away at early extension and have some ideas. Lesson day is best day

Holidays definitely put a little hiccup in the schedule. I’m back on track personally tonight with a one hour practice session. I just went through the app and booked out lessons and practice as far as possible

losing to me straight up pushed him over the edge. He's seen how Golftec helped my game.
