losing to me straight up pushed him over the edge. He's seen how Golftec helped my game.
It was either this or give up and start bowling. 🤪

Seriously, I see myself in this thread last year posting about getting the eval and lessons and looking at dates of my posts and remembering crap that happened. I understand why I didn’t have time last year, but this is a new year.

I don’t mind losing to good golfers, but losing to you hurts @mtbloco 😂😜

There the difference between you and I. I want to live in a world where you’re a good golfer.

The swing eval is pretty enlightening. It’s crazy how they can give you one little thing in that eval that makes an immediate difference. Makes you walk out thinking “how can I not do this!”
My wife is disappointed in you and some of my other golf friends with their improving games and GolfTec. The evaluation on Friday is going to likely take a chunk of money from our bank account afterward. I can hear myself saying, “how can I not do this?” and I haven’t been there yet.

I told her that new wedges I had planned will have to wait until after the Eval.

So today I had my swing eval and 1st lessons with my Coach Chad Beckler and it was really a cool experience.

The getting to know me and my game phase was great as it let me get a little bit settled before the appointment breakdown, swing assessment, and lesson. The whole process I thought would be a lot going in, but Chad kept short and sweet while making sure I had an idea of what was happening.

The assessment and the tech.

I for sure thought I would go in and be a disaster of a swing. In reality I was doing some good stuff and some bad stuff but nothing too terrible. We started with the 7 iron and I hit my usual okay swings and 1-2 really good ones where I get about 183 carry out of it. Then driver and I saw my usual swing and numbers. Once that was done seeing my swing beside Zach Johnson’s was eye opening. The visual feedback coupled with Chad’s breakdown was GREAT! Seeing the issue with what it should look like and talking out the how and why has always worked for me and boy did it help today. He tech showing where I’m at and what I’m doing really is good stuff and makes it easier to have an idea (at least for me) of how to apply the lesson information.

The lesson.
Today we focused on setup as my shoulder tile 1 only 1° vs Zach at 13°. Changing how I setup to the ball and gripping the club with a slightly wider stance really made some good things happen. First I was able to turn and move the club with my body and shoulders vs with my hands previously. Second the weight shift back and then forward was easier. Third of the 6-7 swings I only caught one that was me using the hands again. I did have another that I caught a little off the toe but for a miss it was a good miss that was about 5 yards right of center and still went 175! The good ones were carrying 180-185 and felt like I was doing 1/3 of the work as I had prior to the 2 tweaks from today!

The end of the Eval

I’m sold on the GolfTec approach and the tech they use on site! I can’t wait for next Tuesday to get back for the next lesson and build on today’s! I can’t thank THP and GolfTec enough for one hell of Xmas present!

Good stuff! Sounds like a great start to things. Were there any specific goals that they outlined for your lessons overall?

He asked what I would like to work towards. And I said getting below 15 and eventually to a 10 cap. Getting below 15 is the immediate goal this year. I know it’s early but I’m thinking a 5 lesson pack every winter is what I’m going to go with to get a good base of things to focus on throughout the offseason.

Awesome! Great target, best of luck! I am sure they will get you well on your way. Look forward to seeing you progress!

Worked on learning how to use the ground more at my lesson today. I'll get the full breakdown tomorrow or Thursday probably but it was an interesting lesson. In the 30 min lesson we mostly worked on drills, not hitting a ball.

Drill one was standing on a towel that's laid out, getting to the top of the back swing, then moving the lead foot forward and trail foot back and in to create a diagonal force pulling the towel tight. Then slowly turning while keeping tension throughout the ground. Going to do reps of that at home.

We also did a similar feel on the mat and really worked on holding positions with tension almost like yoga but a lot less relaxing haha. Really trying to feel the ground, feel the tension like trying to rip the ground in half with my feet. From there you can make it a workout and go slow rotating through the downswing and really feeling the extension of the trail leg and lead hips.

This is exactly why mobility is my #1 goal this year. Getting into proper position is HARD. My hips are so tight it's making it much harder than it has to be. Wonder why I early extend? Probably because of this.

Finally we took some swings with an angled alignment stick holder that goes in front of the knee. Goal here is to take full swings without hitting the stick (early extend). I can push laterally just not forward.

Coach hung around for my full 30 min practice and chat about what we worked on watching me work through it. Started to see things really come alive. Here's 2 7 irons and a 4 hybrid for your viewing pleasure.

We love green boxes and more importantly all these swings felt different than my normal swing.

I'm doing a great job feeling the ground tension in the back swing but lose it a little in the downswing. I want to feel that push, but we're getting there.

I forgot to mention, I'm going to be SORE tomorrow. Using muscles I haven't in a long time lol. Had a lot of fun though so I didn't want to stop working through the new feels

Good stuff! Sounds like you are being challenged in good ways. That towel on the floor drill sounds interesting. I am gonna need to try that one. Keep up the good work!

The Death of Early Extension
Early extension has been one of my primary swing flaws since getting back into golf. It can cause so many issues: toe balls, hooks, low point issues, pushes, the list goes on. For the longest time I have been trying to eliminate it by simply telling myself to drive my trail heel down, but it was only kind of successful and it was yet another swing thought to add to the pile. I tried to use a wedge to try and drive off it and could never figure it out. My old golf coach would always tell me to push off my trail inside foot, but I never felt like there was anywhere to drive from.

This week's lesson my coach said to me "this is the winter we end your early extension" and it felt like the end of Braveheart to me lol. So what's causing it and how do we fix it? The answer surprised me.
Here's a video of my before swing straight out of the cold weather https://gt.golf/Hx4PzH (unsure if this is a new feature, but how cool that we can directly share this!)
At set up I am a bit straight legged, so there's no way to load anything

It's hard to tell here, but my backswing and weight transfer was around my trail leg. Call it maybe like a pegleg. It looks like a fairly competent backswing, but my weight is more forward because I am afraid of swaying too much and again, around my trail leg. What we want to do is load the trail leg so that there is something to push off of, rather than it just being along for the ride.

Look how early that heel starts to come up
View attachment 9390081

Heel comes up there's nowhere for the hands to go and thus we get that toey flippy hook.

What he had me do are some various feel exercises. Some, hard to describe, involving squats and then moving the feet into position to feel the back leg loaded, but the easiest to describe and replicate was a towel drill. Stand on a towel, with your feet, try and tear the towel in half pushing outwards with both feet. This really gives you the feeling of using the ground to generate power and instantly resonated. Loading the back leg also requires more lateral movement than I was comfortable doing (or so I thought). I thought any sway is bad so I would try to turn but not shift the weight to the back leg. What I was told is sway is really when your hip goes further out than your feet and then he showed me a video of me doing the swing correctly. It felt like a real movement laterally but on Optimotion we saw it was 0.3 inch movement. I was blown away and another shining example, of how the technology is so impactful and how different feel and real is.

So here is the after video: https://gt.golf/5SaYPa
What changed is from setup I am slightly more knees bent and in an athletic position (I see you @Canadan ), I load my trail leg in the backswing, and PUSH with it in the downswing. Voila, look at the heel

I will be bringing a towel with me to practice today to continue to drive that feel. Killing early extension should lead to more consistent strikes and even more club head speed mwahaha. I am so excited to kill early extension forever.
You are my sprit animal as I read through the thread. Most of my flaws are/were your flaws.

My coach had me stand on triangular wedges that forced my feet to feel they were pushing apart. He pretty much used the same “rip the ground” phrase. Good stuff!

I had a 30 minute practice session scheduled today. Coach was there and watching me during practice. He asked if I had more time tonight because his lesson canceled and he sees something that he would like to work on. Ended up having an impromptu lesson.

I’ll have to work on a recap, but this was one of those lightbulb moments that helped something we’ve been trying to work on and I think this new swing thought might just help it stick.

The app is very convenient I agree. Its also annoying when you try to book a one hour practice session and nothing is available for weeks haha
This is one thing that bothered me today. I hadn’t yet booked an evaluation and looked at my preferred location for availability. What I found is that my preferred location must be popular and I couldn’t book an evaluation without taking time off from work (weekend or after 5pm) until after January 21st.

I did book an evaluation at another location tor 6:30pm, but before I book lessons/practice, I am going to need to know if I can go outside of my work hours. The plan isn’t cheap and most people that can afford the plans probably are working. If 11AM next Tuesday or 9AM next Thursday are the only options, that could be a problem.

That's pretty freaking cool. Glad it went well! Definitely curious what he saw and what the lightbulb was!

Last night I was practicing and trying to work on the move at the top of my backswing that’s killing me. In this video from a previous session, you can see at the top of the backswing, I don’t stop the hands. I tend to keep them moving and bend my shoulders forward. This causes my over the top move and my inconsistency problem.

We’ve tried a couple drills and it’s helped lower it, but not stopped it. So I’m practicing and my coach is watching. He says “if you have time, my next lesson cancelled and I see something that might work.” I jumped at the chance for an impromptu lesson. Anything to help get this annoying move gone!

What he realized watching me is that the thing causing my hands to go up is my shoulder stopping. It would get to the end of my turn and I was “creating more depth” my bending my shoulders back to front and raising the hands up. I need to figure out how to get that depth with a turn, not lift and bend!

He decided to tackle this by looking at the hand path. We had previously worked on getting the hands moving up a little sooner so they wouldn’t feel the need to keep moving up at the top. Well that clearly wasn’t working because I was stopping that turn. We moved back away from that. We went to the opposite and really exaggerating the feel of the arms working around my body. Left arm driving the turn but staying down and pushing around like I was trying to grab the wall behind my back.

First drill: coach put an alignment stick on the ground and held the pool noodle. The goal was to trace the alignment stick on the takeaway and do not touch the noodle.
IMG_2432.jpeg

Check out the difference face on!
IMG_2440.jpeg

This took a few slow tries to get the feel right. It was definitely a different path. You can see just how “wrapped” around my body we were looking to get me feeling. He said “left arm across the chest is the visual goal.
IMG_2433.jpeg

Here’s the first go without the noodle at 50% speed. The “real” moved up a touch from the “feel” drill, but still good. Blue boxes are my target!
IMG_2436.jpeg

And with that new position at the top, look at where the hands got on the down swing! Over the top was gone!
IMG_2437.jpeg

Impact & follow through positions much better and more balanced
IMG_2438.jpeg

IMG_2439.jpeg

Putting it all together and taking the first swing at a ball, which is usually where my brain malfunctions and goes to the “smash ball” thought and over swing, you can see that it actually stuck! I got the good positions and made a good swing.
IMG_2442.jpeg

I was the last person in the studio so I hit a few more while coach added the notes to the app for me. 10 really good swings in a row later, and I left very encouraged with this breakthrough.

It was definitely one of those good feeling ones. So often I leave thinking about how many dry swings it will take to get this feeling okay. This one had me leaving with the feeling that I have my new swing thought.

It's so cool that your instructor asked if you had time to jump in cause he thought he had something for you. Really cool that you have that relationship with him.

Availability appears to be location specific. Tempe, AZ is the one that I looked at with little availability but Chandler, AZ where I booked my evaluation has lots of availability when browsing through times.

@FlipFlop you are killing it in this thread!
