High School football player attacks referee

As soon as I saw this I thought to myself, that kid will likely never get to play football again. All because of one moment where he lost his cool.

Totally not right and I hope that ref is OK.
Concussion and broken collar bone is what I read.

I have no problem with the penalties imposed on the school or the player as far as football. In addition, I have no problem with the player being criminally charged.

If the kid was getting scholarships those are gone. Hopefully that teaches him a lesson and he learns from it. I would hope that the ref and the coaches all use this as a moment where they can teach all of the kids what can happen. I would also hope the kid learns from it and goes on to play through Juco and it makes him better. I have a hard time calling for Jail time for a kid even though this is absolutely on the line.

haven't heard but if he was arrested at the game but if he wasn't I would be shocked. This is assault, not sure what degree as I am not a lawyer and thankfully have never been charged with it to know better.

When I was 16, on our legion baseball team our coach got into a physical altercation with an umpire. He initiated it but they both engaged. The police were called and came to the scene, we had to wait for about an hour for witnesses to be interviewed including our coach. I honestly think the only reason he wasn't put in cuffs and hauled "downtown" was that he was our only coach and you would have had at least 10 kids under 18 having to get home without any adult supervision from 90 miles away from their hometown. And this was back in the 90s when things were a bit more lax...

If I recall correctly he was suspended for the rest of the season and his replacement would smoke cigarettes in the dugout and taught all of us that it is "about girth not length" as well as many other nuggets of wisdom. Was an interesting summer for sure.

the kid will end up at some junior college and is he shows skills then he will get picked up by some school like FSU or south florida, a school that has no problem with players like this. and he will never learn anything since he probably has people telling him he did nothing wrong and it was the refs fault.

What does kicking the school out of the playoffs do, exactly? What is determined that the coaching staff supported his actions?
Actions have consequences and sometimes the consequences of a person's actions affect others. That's an important lesson to learn.

This just out.

On Friday, Duron, who was escorted from the stadium by police officers, was charged with Class A assault. He is being held in county jail on a $10,000 bond.

As a sports official, Football, Basketball and Lacrosse this has become all to common. This has been all over every officials forum the last few days. What boggles my mind is that this kid has a prior incident in soccer. The school admins and coaches should have seen this coming but in the heat of competition the "rose" colored glasses syndrome takes over. Win at all costs. From my experience as an official who does multiple levels of sports and deals with young kids all the way thru adults this is becoming the norm. Nobody respects authority in any sense of the word. When I was a kid if I acted out like that my father and grandfather would be the snot out of me...NASO is an organization that has been pushing states to enact laws to make it a felony for assault of an official. They have pushed quite a few states, but not nearly enough.

I would argue it's sending a message more than teaching a lesson.

You're not teaching the kids who did everything right on the team anything other than the world sucks and there's not much you can do about it.

Unfortunately like someone already said, actions of one affect others. This kid has a history, re past assault on a referee in soccer. The school should have been on top of this kid like white on rice. To further this point the officials should have walked off the field and right to the police station until the kid was dragged into the station that evening. The fact that the game continued after this is even more disturbing. They are lucky that the situation did not devolve into a full on brawl between the teams, fortunately cooler heads prevailed but there is no way as an offical on that crew I am continuing that game. The administration of that school has to own that fact and it should have been ruled a forfeit right then and there.

solid take.

...and of course I repeat, what that dude did was absolutely appalling. Just sucks for his teammates.

Saw this earlier this morning on the Texas Tech forum. @BuckNasty is right that he did this in soccer during the 2019-2020 season. There were also two player that did this a 2-3 years ago in San Antonio.

If the team removed itself from the playoffs then that is fine but I don't think they should be kicked out because of this. Not right to punish the other players that have worked hard all year for the actions of one idiot.
Just read about this. The fact that he had done the same thing in the previous soccer season should make take a hard look at this person. Obviously being suspended from that season didn't teach him anything.

If that kid played soccer he is the biggest soccer player I've ever seen.

Might as well teach them early.

And to further the discussion on this. I had an experience about 10 years ago during a Thanksgiving day Turkey Bowl, supposed to be a fun game. A kid was carted of the field into an ambulance with a neck injury, ended up being a fractured vertebra. This kid was hurt on a dirty hit early in the 2nd quarter, it was flagged and proper penalties were assessed. From then on the game went downhill with more and more personal foul penalties in the 2nd quarter because everyone wanted to get even for the dirty hit. At halftime the referee crew went and spoke to each coaching staff and players. They were told the next personal foul the game would be over. First play after the 2nd half kickoff, the kid who had gotten hurts brother launches himself into the QB laying him out like it was the WWE. The white hat blows his whistle and signals the game is over, the coaches come running on the field toward the officials, The white hat explains what was said at halftime was not a threat it was a promise. We as officials walked off the field to a chorus of boos from the couple of hundred people who were in attendance plus the players AND coaches yelling and screaming. There hasn't been a Turkey Bowl with these 2 teams since that day. The coach was fired after that season an has been unable to be a head coach any longer for any HS team in the district since.

Good. I was a police officer and was just about to say that rather than ordering players and coaches back to the sideline, I would've locked that kid up right there on the spot. In front of everyone, because its deserved and to send the message to all that criminal behavior will not be tolerated.

Hopefully the criminal will go to jail and the referee is ok.
