I'm very tall and +2 on my irons was not comfortable for me so I put new shafts in my irons +4 Inches I've read that an iron that long is impossible to hit but I'm not having any problems hitting my irons. I'm looking to get a new set of irons I want the R-11's and I'm not sure if I should get them in that length or learn to play shorter irons. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

How tall are you buddy? I would assume that if you were fit for irons at 4'' longer than standard then you should order them and have them built at that length. GOLFTEC sponsors the "Ask the Pro" section and they are specialists at what they do. I bet they could answer your question for you more professionally than many of us can.

Hey, I am 6' 4" and I was fitted for +1", if you are +4" you must be very tall.

I am 6'6" I wasn't fitted for them at that length I did it myself... I tried them at +2 and it was very uncomfortable to swing the club so I re-shafted them at +4. I am now curious if that length is hurting my game and if I should go back to +2 and adapt to it

When I was fitted I thought that I would be standard length because I'm 5'10, but I was fitted for +1/2''. I think your height does play a factor in being fitted for irons but you swing is the most important factor.

Not just your swing, but how long your arms are. Normally I'd say someone 6 6 would be 1 or 2 inches more, but if you've got alligator arms it could be more.

Excellent point! In the end getting fitted in the only way to know. Static fittings are great but theres nothing like getting fit on the range with a good club fitter. It's well worth the time and money.

That's why they take all those measurements, I think it's wrist to floor. I'm almost 6'2" and was measured for 1/2" over standard. I could play 1", but it just seemed too long for me. If you're comfortable at +4" then go for it.

I'm 6'3" and I play irons that are +1/2" as well. I was fitted almost 10 years ago at +1". I guess my swing changed.... Of course but all in all I'm very comfortable with my setup now.

Im an ogre with gangly arms at 6'6 and was fit for irons only 1/4" long.

I am 6'6" too and was fit for + 1 1/2" which I do ok with, but I too have wondered about longer shafts in my clubs. There is a company called MTM golf that actually fits people into longer clubs based on their actual physical measurements - not just wrist to floor. They actually use bone length measurements from a doctor to determine club lengths. Their basic idea is that there is a proper athletic posture for every body type, and that shorter people can get into that position with standard club lengths or ones that are slightly altered, but taller people need extended clubs - and not just the normal +1/2" to 2" that most fittings will come up with. Look how upright a lot of "normal" height golfers are with fitted clubs. Then look at taller golfers like us with "fitted" clubs, and look how bent over and contorted we are to get into position to hit the ball. The more upright shorter golfer is in a more athletic posture and doesn't have near the issues that we have. They don't have to bend their knees nearly as far to address the ball, or bend at the waist near as much. They are in a lot better athletic posture from the start.

I sent an email to MTM a couple months ago to find out if anyone in America is utilizing their fitting system and they said that right now there isn't anyone. They sent me a form to take to my doctor to get all the measurements and they could build me a set, or even a couple clubs to try out, but I haven't done anything with it yet. Hope this helps you out. I am still VERY interested in their system and may go ahead this winter and try a couple clubs just to see.

Lots of good info here you guys made some strong points!
The conclusion I've come to is I'll play what I've got until I get a professional fitting, try what they recommend and see if I like it.

Exactly - if your arms barely reach all the way to your pants pockets when they are hanging loose at your side you will need longer clubs no matter how short or tall you are. My finger tips reach to about 4 inches above my knee caps so although I am 6-3 I can hit regular length clubs with no problem with a 35 inch sleeve. I always buy + 1 inch though because I like to choke down a little and I like the extra distance I get from the longer shaft.

in my previous life I order custom pings for an ex-NBA baller and they were 4" over with jumbo grips. He was quite comfortable with the setup

A few weeks ago a Ping rep watched me hit a few balls with +1/2 length demo club and then handed me an Anser Forged 6i and I absolutely was killing it. It seemed to fit me real well and I thought at first it was just the head working so well but then he told me that I was hitting a +1 1/2". I was to be honest kind of surprised I didn't notice the extra length on the club but it felt great. He said that his first thought watching me hit balls was that I could benefit from a longer club and he may be right.

i am 6 ft 5 and was fitted for an +1 i went to another fitter and was fitted for a +1.5 this was troubling for me i initially talked to a few people and the consenus was that an +1.5
was nuts,i went with a +1 and didnt like the feel of my irons at all.i ended up getting my irons redone to +1.5 and right away i could feel the difference, they felt so much better
needless to say its hard to find a good clubfitter.

As long as the irons are fitted for you, there is no such thing as too long.

I think you are right! And like being able to hit my 6 iron 225 yards I couldn't do that at standard length...lol
