Is there anything you can use to clean light faint scratches on a steel shaft? An iron shaft or putter shaft for example. Their not gouges just faint brush strokes I suppose but their on a shaft.

Rubbing compound on chrome has worked for some people

Are we talking rubbing compound and a micro fiber cloth by hand?

@JB is on the right path IMO. Some metal polish and a microfibre towel. Anything you can do to increase the reflectivity of the metal plating will reduce the visibility of any scratches.

Try Mister Clean Power Eraser, if not fine rubbing compound or auto scratch remover. Check progress frequently by wiping clean and quick polish, don’t want to go too deep.

If they're really light, toothpaste might do it, believe it or not.

Yep. I used toothpaste on the plastic covers of my turntables and it worked like magic. You have to use a certain kind though, like normal Colgate.
