Hi!
It’s been a long time since I posted anything here. I’ve been working on my swing a lot this offseason and figured some things out.

I’ve a very inside backswing, my trail elbow never leaves my body and the backswing is very short therefore and rotation gets limited. I’ve had this since I started to playing golf 2021,

When I try to fix it, by taking the club more outside and rotate better I can do it in practice swings but never with the ball at the ground. My nervous system autocorrect and takes the club inside so Ili have almost given up on fixing this.

I play a steady draw with 7-9 in to out path, but I really want to minimize that number to a 2-3 with path.

So my solution to this is to open up my stance a bit and have a fade feeling, that should neutralize my path.

Is this something someone have done or have experience of?

It’s quite frustrating the feeling that my body don’t respond to what I want to do (swing as Ludwig Åberg :)

I’m a hcp 5-7

How do you practise: Sim, range or shoot into a net?

Holy smokes, you and I are the same person!

I also have a short backswing, suck the club inside on the backswing and have a strong inside to out swing path. I've started working on it in the simulator this year, hoping to get it changed a little for the season.

My biggest struggle is the inside out path. I'm typically in that 3-4.5 I/O area and can't seem to fix it.

The thing I've been trying lately is feeling like I'm exaggerating an outside takeaway and getting my hands high at the top. It's still very early in trying this so time will tell if it helps.

The probably not much help, but I have to say, it's comforting seeing a fellow THPer that's working on this!

Hi there fellow struggler:)

I’ve done this aswell , (having an outside takeaway) and it’s only working without ball. I’ve been hitting ball 5 hours today and I figured out that the issue is the lead hand, it starts to bow early to the inside in the takeaway, and it’s a strong reflex. And I’m not sure if I can fix it. But I have a good sense of path and face and I sling that ball pretty well into the green, latest round at sim was two under with 14/18 greens.

And the weird thing is, I can work the ball if I really need to with a fade. (My home course is very fade biased)

I don’t know , it just annoys me :)

I use trackman in sim, also indoor in a net, and when weather allows it outside on grass, not so much on the range

I hear you on being annoyed. It's such a hard thing to fix. I've been swinging this way for probably a couple of decades so it's ingrained in me. I'll have to pay attention to my lead hand when I'm in the simulator next time.

Aberg rotates his forearms inwards and his upper arms outwards during the swing. One has to do this in order to keep the club on plane. On Plane has the shaft pointing to the ball/ target line (extended) except when they are parallel to each other.
It is an important fundamental if one wants to be any good at this game. In order to master it, a golfer has to go through a painful experience until the shoulders free up. Unfortunately there is no other way.

Thanks for the reply, not sure if I fully comprehend your description of aberg. But I’ve seen him doing his pre shot routine, and he’s rotating back with the upper body and club in a one-piece takeaway, where the club face is pointing at the ball a long time. And that’s where I struggle, I tend to skip the upperbody rotation and just shrug the lead hand in with a bowed hand.

But I’m aware, and I’m starting now to work on it. Maybe my brain has the ability to relearn. We will see

We don't learn much from watching a great swing because there is so much going on that is not accessible to the spectator. All the real work happens close to the spine and joints and is usually the opposite to what we think is happening. Trying to copy a player without the know how of how it needs to work is a waste of time and effort.

You could try the Nelly Korda drill. Place a ball behind the club head and when you take a backswing you want to push the ball back on a straight line vs inside.

It's incredibly frustrating.

If your swing looks better for practice swings, the solution might be slow.

Work on hitting balls with a much slower and deliberate swing to make sure you are hitting your positions. Don't be tempted to speed up after a few good swings. Start slow and slowly creep up to normal speed.

In my original post I mentioned that my stuck elbow prevents me from a full backswing, and that’s why I’m getting into rabbit holes as overthinking the takeaway and how it affects my swing. And Ludvig is just one of many interesting subjects I study.

I’ve done that and I do that everyday. With no effect. I think my left hand has some serious inside path Tourette’s which is impossible to fix 😂

Yeah, it's a tough one. I can be perfectly on plane with a slow swing, but as soon as I decide to take a real swing.... out the window!

Mm… the thing is, I have developed a feel for this 7-10 degree i/o path, and I can match my face to it, but my swingspeed lacks from the short backswing. 96mph with driver and 76 with irons. It’s playable but now in offseason I will atleast try to free up that bloody elbow. Someone here mentioned the Nelly Korda drill. That might be useful!

Update. I did some research about how you make big swing changes, and everyone suggested doing the motion in steps and slowmotion. So I started this today and within 30min I saw huge difference, so im very excited, but aware of the time this will take. To not fall back in the old swing will be a big challenge

Awesome to hear. If you get a chance, I would highly suggest trying to play a full sim round with full preshot routine to lock in where your swing changes are. Play every shot 1 club more to make up for the slow down (maybe even two). I find, even on sim golf, hitting some good shots will help give me confidence in the change.

Im going to the sim today actually, its way to early imo, but I will commit to the new swing and care less of the ball flight

Inside takeaway I like using alignment sticks to help train that out. This is a drill I have used with the Golfer's Toolbox but the Tour Aim is another one that you can use or just plain alignment sticks. Here is the set up for it minus the box of golf balls if you are not over the top.

Thank you a good one, will use it 👊🏻

Many, many years ago, when Hank Haney had his "golf ranch" near me, my wife got me a lesson with him for Christmas. He said I had a very inside takeaway on the backswing as well, which he said would result in a lot of fat or thin shots if one's weight shift wasn't good enough, as the club would bottom out too far back in the down swing. To get me away from that, he exaggerated the taking of the club away to the outside. That is probably the way you have to practice, go to the extreme going back "outside" until you can overcome that tendency to take it back so far inside. Just a thought.

Not sure what stuck elbow means? So I will describe what mine does. At address it is tucked inside the right hip. During the backswing the elbow doesn't move but the right hip moves back behind. During the backswing the forearm rotates counterclockwise from takeaway. Halfway into the backswing the counterclockwise forearm rotation becomes clockwise rotation as the forearm passes parallel with the ground. The elbow is still inside the right hip which has rotated externally. At the top the elbow is pointing down with the palm of the hand pointing at the sky in a carry the tray position.
The feeling during the second half of the backswing is the plane of the shaft matches the plane of the shaft at address as does the left forearm.

My elbow never leaves my rib cage . Get it now?

I do. The challenge for you is to keep the elbows close together during the swing as well as keeping them down. You have the down part, you just need the together part.
Swinging with a mini-band just above the elbows should do the trick. Just be aware that it may take up to 6+months of work to free up the shoulder rotators. It is not a comfortable experience but stay with it, it is worth the trouble.

I had the same path issues myself.

I use a back swing drill for full swings that helps to keep me on (my) plane. Pretty simple drill.

Take your stance with the club head, square behind the ball. Without moving your arms, cock your wrists so the club is in a horizontal position, level to the ground, pointing straight back.

Then from there, start your back swing up to your down swing transition. The wrists will release naturally. I do this drill with a ball.

This drill was given to me to help my release in the down swing, but it also helped getting the correct path into the ball. Probably fixed a few other of my swing issues.

Might be worth a try.
