I have really been hitting my Titleist Vokey's well of late and really enjoy the feel, sound, and the results. I had a 56, then added a new 60, then a 52, then last a 48 bent to 46 to use as a PW. I'm a "high handicapper" but do manage some fair iron shots (for me). I'm contemplating replacing the 6,7,8,9 Diablo Edge irons I currently use with something along the lines of the Vokeys. I may try some used ones first in case it doesn't work out well. What do you all think would be some irons compatible with the Vokeys' feel and performance in the lofts for 6-9?
Thanks in advance. Pat

Titleist AP-2

Thanks, TC. You still liking your R11's?

I have a 60 degree Titleist Vokey wedge and absolutely love it. I've paired it successfully with Taylormade CB and R11 irons, and Cleveland CG Gold irons to a somewhat lesser degree. I'd say that the Vokey wedges are easy to hit once you practice a bit with them, and are precision instruments in that results are repeatable with a consistent swing. In that same regard, I'd consider them extremely similar to either the CB or R11 irons. Both those irons are consistent performers if you dedicate some time and practice to get familiar with them.

I absolutely trust TC's opinion on the AP2 irons, just based on my knowledge of him from these forums. But I've never played the AP2 myself.

I have a hunch that if you love Vokey wedges that Ping i15 or g15 irons might be worth a look. In particular, the i15. Cast clubs like the Vokeys, thinnish sole, and predictable. Hope this gives you some ideas to look into further.

Thank you, Rob and TC,

That's good info to ponder. Actually, the R-11's are looking pretty good to me now. Some folks have actually returned them to our local shop because "they were too long" ! Young guys with swing speeds about 40 mph faster than mine. I may see if I can pick some up like that.

You're right about the value of practice with the Vokeys. I started with a 60 degree, then added 56, then 52, lastly a 48 bent to 46.(Gift certificate!!) Now that one is fun to hit!! Coming in to 18 Tues from about 110 or so, it went high, landed solid and came back about 18 inches. Had a short putt to make and a deep ball mark to repair. Good ending to the round.

Dr. P,

I pretty much recommended the AP-2's based on the fact that I thought you were looking for a natural progression from the Vokey wedges. I have tested them a few times and they are nice irons but they don't hold a candle to the R11's in the distance and forgiveness departments. One would expect that as the AP-2's are geared more towards a player's iron. I would also assume that the R11's are probably similar to the AP-2's in shape, size, sole width, top line width. They really are a nice iron and if you are looking for an extra pick me up in the distance department then look no further.

I agree with TC. When you ask for something along the lines of the Vokeys, the reco's will be a players iron. If I could give you any advice I would broaden my search to the best irons for your game. If your dead set on a players iron then I think you need to hit as many as possible. When you get into those types of irons feel is different with each one. How about some Callaway Razr X Tours? They are like a players iron but packed with tons of forgiveness.

Thanks, Guys. I have ordered a couple of used Titleist irons for not many $$ to just see if I can progress beyond my current Super Game Improvement iron status.
I ordered an 8,9, PW in 695CB Titleist. I did go by Golfsmith today and tried hitting a number of the "Players" type irons. About all that's available to try like that are 6 irons. I was quickly reminded why I am using the Diablo Edge set.
I would have ordered the Titleist AP2's, but couldn't find any individual irons for sale (except 3 or 6), only sets.
I do appreciate your opinions and recommendations.

your welcome...you can usually EBAY some singles

I'll put in a vote for the Mission JPX 800 pro's. I currently game a Vokey 56 and I enjoy the transition from my set's PW.
