I was having a conversation with some coworkers yesterday and the topic of "favorite potato dish" came up and my newest employee's answer was pierogis. This created a large debate about if it (and other dumpling type foods) are considered "potato dishes."

What say you THP?

Pierogi can only be considered a potato dish if it's the traditional potato & farmers cheese.

Otherwise, no

I would say yes.
The best meals, are ones where you get perogies and mashed potatoes.

kiwichris is correct. You can get pierogis filled with everything from prunes to lobster to portobello mushrooms. For pierogis to be considered a potato dish, they must be filled with mostly potatoes.

If it's traditional potato then yes but if it has other fillings then it's more dumpling I think.

Lobster? What craziness are you speaking of? That's some fancy pierogi

This - I am a sucker for the homemade sauerkraut ones they sell at the Polish church around the holidays by my parents' house, so those would be a no, but still tasty especially when made by old Polish grandmas's

I never thought of this. But yes. Good call, I think it’s a potato dish.

Absolutely it is. It’s a potato dough.

I think you're gonna have to explain yourself. Potato dough?

Marrying into a Polish family and actually making these, no potato ever was in the dough.

Maybe it’s a family thing 🤷. No part of the potato is wasted around here.

I would consider it a potato dish if the pierogis have potatoes in them.

This is the correct answer

Can’t say I’ve ever had or saw it in person.

I’ve somehow never had a pierogi and I feel very sad about it.

What? No.

I want a pierogi now.

Having a Polish MIL means we get the best pierogi. The fruit ones are something else

No. Cheese ravioli isn’t a cheese dish, so pierogis aren’t a potato dish.

If it s traditional, yes. If it’s weird fillings, it a dumpling.
