Is it weird that I am more consistent with my driver than with my irons?

I am honestly more likely to hit target with a driver on a day to day basis than I am with irons. What is the deal with that?

Not weird at all

I can relate, but when we hit the driver, we want it in the fairway or a particular spot on the fairway. So when we hit it there it's awesome, but I feel there is more room for error with my driver. When I'm hitting an iron, I usually want it within a few yards of where I'm aiming and when I don't put it there, there are greater consequences for the miss.

but I feel you, I regularly have greater confidence in my driver then my irons.

Would irons with some more forgiveness than your gamers help? Or do you think it is a tee thing

True. I'm talking being able to drive greens on shorter par 4's, while hitting approach "shats" (a new term I came up with to describe how I shat the bed on an easy approach shot).

The irons I have are plenty forgiving, but you have to hit the face. My issues with irons are almost always due to hitting rockets off the leading edge.

Is it a swing thing? Driver and iron swings are pretty different. I used to love driver and hate irons and now I've definitely reversed that.

Don't think its weird at all. While I can be as inconsistent with all parts of my game.
There have been very many rounds where you couldn't pay me to hit a bad drive yet that same round you couldn't pay me to hit a good iron.

I don't think it is weird at all. When you get down to it, driver off the tee has no variation in lie so you can really groove it. With irons, you're dealing with the ball sitting on the ground - fairway vs. rough - and also side/down/uphill lies which all make it more difficult to strike the ball and also impart different direction.

For all those reasons, driver should be more consistent provided one swings within a controllable framework. I think what tends to make driver an inconsistent club is the tendency to overswing. Unlike most every other club, psychologically longer = better for driver. That tends to get people to overswing. The biggest negative tendency I have with driver is to do that. If I stay within a controllable driver swing, I get pretty consistent strike, flight and distance. The challenge for me is to work on a faster/harder strike within a controllable framework. Swinging harder and faster if it is not within that framework is self-defeating.

My driver and iron swing are getting very close to being the same swing actually. My swing is extremely dependent on setup (grip, ball position, and distance from the ball). Get those things right and it can be really easy. Get them wrong and it's going to be a rough time.

I don't think it's weird. I'm currently more accurate off the tee than with my irons. It's been that way for most of this year. Go figure.
