Is Soft Really the Goal?

Is soft the goal? No. Too soft and I can't play the putter.

I haven't played that many insert putters on a regular basis ... but I thought the feel was mostly fine with the notable exception of a Bobby Grace MOI putter with an insert and milling and that putter had no feel/no sound off the ball - it lives in my attic.

The issue I have had with some milled putters is the milling was too deep - they had feel that was so soft they produced no sound off the ball - I sold or traded in those putters rather quickly - one was a Bettinardi I desperately wanted to keep.

During my last fitting - I tried three different depths of milling and chose medium versus deep or shallow. Deep produced little sound off ProV1x, Shallow was too direct, and medium was just right - not the softest but gave me the feedback and sound that helped

I now use a LAB with the steel insert - it produces a nice "Tok" sound that I appreciate. Still soft (to me) but with the sound from contact that I need.

Just to clarify, I play a first gen. Cleveland HB SOFT 11c, with a milled face, cut to 29".. This putter is center shafted, with 3 alignment lines, and all you need is is a smooth "back and through stroke", and the ball starts "rolling" immediately! Distance control is very good with this putter, once you get accustomed to it. Feel IS very good with this putter. I put on a SuperStroke Traxion Tour 2.0 grip, with a 25g counterbalanced weight in the butt end if the grip. I will be playing this putter for some time to come...

I have to say, i'm very happy with my Cleveland HB SOFT 10.5c and agree with your thoughts as well. I'm still using the stock grip which seems similar to the Flatso 1.0 perhaps a touch smaller in diameter. So happy i went to the center shafted putter, it's made a world of difference for me (even if it's all in my head)

Yes, it has for me...

I think a big part of it is milled is considered cool and sexy, but soft feel is preferred.

I don’t get too hung up on feel either way, but my speculation. Only thing I can’t get on with is too mushy

My only goal is to control speed so if soft or firm either work I’ll go with it

I like the slightly firm click that comes with milled...but like soft feel too.

Probably why I like this putter so much.
