Is soft the goal? No. Too soft and I can't play the putter.
I haven't played that many insert putters on a regular basis ... but I thought the feel was mostly fine with the notable exception of a Bobby Grace MOI putter with an insert and milling and that putter had no feel/no sound off the ball - it lives in my attic.
The issue I have had with some milled putters is the milling was too deep - they had feel that was so soft they produced no sound off the ball - I sold or traded in those putters rather quickly - one was a Bettinardi I desperately wanted to keep.
During my last fitting - I tried three different depths of milling and chose medium versus deep or shallow. Deep produced little sound off ProV1x, Shallow was too direct, and medium was just right - not the softest but gave me the feedback and sound that helped
I now use a LAB with the steel insert - it produces a nice "Tok" sound that I appreciate. Still soft (to me) but with the sound from contact that I need.
