The greatest amateur event ever created!

The 2022 Grandaddy is here. 3+ days of action coming your way and this thread will serve as host for everything that takes place. If the participants see it (and can share it), it will be here. Watch and hear from them as they go through their fittings, tour Callaway HQ and meet everybody behind the brand.

Then it is off to the exclusive Hideaway in Palm Desert for 2 days of golf competition between the THP Forum members and the marketing team of Callaway Golf. Just because you are not there, does not mean you cannot be part of the action and win a brand new Callaway Rogue ST Driver of your choice. Follow along to every single part of the 2022 Grandaddy of Em All, right here.

HOW TO ENTER

The contest is simple, before the golf kicks off, jump in and tell us these two things. First, who will win the Grandaddy of Em All? Team Callaway or Team THP? Then, in the same comment below, tell us which Rogue ST Driver head you would like to win to get more distance off the tee. It is that easy, but do not forget, this is the greatest thread for golfers who love equipment, as TONS of information will be shared and you can even get your questions answered live as it all unfolds. The Live Portion of all of this will kick off Sunday and Monday with travel for the participants and then Monday evening, get ready for wall to wall action of everything they see.

For the 9th time, the greatest amateur golf event ever created is here….

It is finally time for the Grandest Experience on the THP Calendar, The Grandaddy from Callaway Golf and THP Golf. Callaway Golf’s Marketing Team will provide an all-access pass to Callaway HQ and R&D to 13 lucky THP’ers. After HQ tours and product presentations, it is off to the ECPC for a fitting for a full bag of Callaway Clubs.

Then it is off to the exclusive Hideaway in Palm Desert for 2 days of golf competition between the THP Forum members and the marketing team of Callaway Golf. This event is extremely special to me, as yours truly represented THP in the 2017 edition.

If you want to see what the Grandaddy is all about, check out this link to the 2021 Live Update Thread: https://www.thehackersparadise.com/...andaddy-of-em-all-with-callaway-golf.8935703/

If you want to get down to the soul of this event, click here to see Al's speech from 2017. Al is a member of the Hideaway Golf Club, who welcomed the participants into his beautiful home and discussed what it was all about over drinks and delicious food.

Al also previews what is coming for the participants here in this video:

It doesn’t matter if you are a long-time member of the THP Universe or new around here, this is a follow that you don’t want to miss.

Now that I have gotten the set up out of the way, let’s take a moment to break down the event and lay down some odds…

When and Where
December 6th-8th
Carlsbad, CA and The Hideaway Golf Club in La Quinta, California

The courses that The Grandaddy is contested on, are at The Hideaway Golf Club (The Clive & The Dye) in La Quinta, California. The forum has numerous posts in about the two courses at The Hideaway Golf Club (The Clive & The Dye). At this post, I don’t know which of the two courses will be used during singles, but it should be noted that I found that The Clive is the easier of the two courses. I also found that The Clive was the most picturesque of the two courses, with The Dye providing a sterner test of golf.

If you want to research the courses in more detail, the following thread is a great place to start:

https://www.thehackersparadise.com/...he-hideaway-golf-courses-review-thread.78989/

The Handicaps of the Teams:

Team Callaway:
(Combined Handicap- 5.7)

Captain: Jason Finley- 6 (Same)

Johnny Wunder- 1.7 (+1.2)

Austin Tudor- 2 (+0.5)

Luke Williams- 2 (-0.5)

Nick McInally- 2.9 (+0.1)

Kim Johnson- 4.8 (+0.8)

Ethan Ganot- 5.9 (-0.3)

Zack Oakley- 6 (First Appearance)

Dave Neville- 8.1 (+0.3)

Jeff Newton- 9 (-2)

Johnny Rodriguez- 10 (-0.8)

Paul Winterhalter- 10.3 (First Appearance)

It should be noted that at a combined handicap of 5.7, this edition of Team Callaway has the lowest combined team handicap in the history of The Grandaddy.

Team THP: (Combined Handicap- 12.7)

Captain: @Davidhibler -16.4

AssCaptain: @Tevenor – Comfort Stations

@templeton80 – +1.3

@captaincaution – 5.2

@PKorf – 5.8

@Doubleb21 – 7.4

@mancest – 9.2

@Saywhat4412 – 13.1

@drp3434 – 13.4

@Scrap22 – 13.5

@fuffle master – 18.1

@goalie – 19

@PackersGirl – 29.5

On paper, Team Callaway has a huge edge in combined handicap (5.7 to 12.7), and although there are a few new faces, this group (from a combined handicap standpoint) is the strongest team from top to bottom that Callaway has ever boasted in this event. This 7-stroke spread in combined handicap is the largest spread in any two teams in any experience that I have handicapped.

Although Team Callaway has an advantage here, Team THP counters with a strong top end of the line-up and bunch of mid-caps. It’s 12.7 combined handicap is the highest combined handicap that Team THP has ever had in the history of The Grandaddy. Captain Finley has a limited pairing options to mitigate exposure to the pops that Team THP can bring to bear in most pairing configurations.

Captain Hibler has a lot of options related to his pairings, and a wider range of options to get exotic. Depending on the pairing strategy, this could be a lot closer than it appears on paper. The general rule of thumb is that you set your pairings for the Alternate Shot, but without Alternate Shot, set the pairings for Shamble and take your chances in Best Ball. We will see how the captains go about their pairings.

Format:

Traditionally, The Grandaddy is contested over 2 days in a Ryder Cup style competition.

Day 1 includes 2 sets of 9 hole matches with 12 available. Shamble and Best Ball are the traditional formats on Day 1 (Pinehurst & Alt Shot has also been used in the past).

Day 2 is Singles competition with 12 points available. 12’ points wins The Grandaddy.

With the matches on Day 1 being of the 9-hole variety (they go quick) it is important to get off to a good start on Day 1 for any chance at victory. Also 50% of the total points in the event are on Day 1, making a quick start very important. If you are rooting for Team THP, then need to make a charge during the Shamble portion and hold one during the Best Ball stanza. A fast start is absolutely critical here, as deficits are very hard to overcome in singles play.

The Captain’s match in singles is also of special attention as Finley looks to get back to his dominating ways after being bested by Captain Dimples in 2021. This year he catches Captain Hibler and his 11 pops. Fading this many pops provides a different animal from what Captain Finley has had to do in the past. Unlike last year, where Finley was coming in on a down note from a lackluster performance at the 2021 Dream Foursome, this year he seemed to be in early season form at The Goat Cup this year.

When we last saw Captain Hibler, he was helping Team JDax to an emphatic victory at The Rivalry. It should be noted that Captain Hibler lost his singles match to JB at The Rivalry. Having played with both men, JB is way more friendly with putts given, than The Dark Lord of The Hideaway. Finley gives no quarter, but I believe that Captain Hibler will be ready for the challenge.

Opening Odds:

It is hard not to make Team Callaway a favorite here to open, as they have won 7 of the previous 8 Grandaddy’s. They also have an advantage in the combined handicap metric, as well as some have experience playing the course.

I haven’t even mentioned that Team Callaway plays with their own clubs, historically that has been an advantage for Team Callaway. In this edition, Team THP will be playing with their own clubs. I think what Team THP gains from familiarity it loses in improved tech. Team Callaway has 8 players with a handicap of 6 or better (Team THP has 3 players that meet this criteria). Luke is an absolute killer and he’s their 3rd lowest cap. Even one of Team Callaway’s newcomers, Zack Oakley, has played on the winning side of a THP Experience before, this team is loaded. It’s like the 1927 Yankees, heavy hitters everywhere you look. I’m not sure to the statue of limitations, but last year I had to call Kim, “Daddy” after her sparkling play. This 7-stroke spread in combined handicap is the largest in the history of The Grandaddy.

With that being said, Team THP is a more than a live dog and has a puncher’s chance. I will be paying close attention to gear selection (what isn’t *redacted*), and of course the Day 1 pairings. Captain Hibler has a chance to get exotic with his pairings, and Team THP will be getting pops in almost any configuration. It really depends on how well the guys/gal getting a ton of pops (Fuffle, Goalie, and PackersGirl) play and can they make those pops count, if this happens and the mid-caps catch fire, look out. Especially on the Clive course where pops can be a great equalizer.

Team THP has a lot of event experience (Pkorf, templeton80, mancest, & fuffle to name a few), and Tevenor has been there before to help them navigate the surreal nature of this experience. I know Captain Hibler, he’s a friend of mine, and I know he will have them ready for the moment. Why not us? Why not now? The upset is there for the taking, and I wouldn’t be shocked if it happens.

Team Odds of Winning The Grandaddy:

Team Callaway -600

Team THP +460
