If it is a homemade loaf, it is the first piece eaten. Often will cut off both ends to eat those first.
Store-bought? It probably gets tossed out. No good for toast. Unless the kids want some bread, it probably won't be eaten.

I usually toss it unless it's the only option. I did have a heel on one side of a salami sandwich the other day and shredded cheese since we were out of slices. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Is it referred to as the heel nationwide?

We call it the butt, but just here call it the heel.

Toss it, unless it is the last piece of bread in the house. Then maybe.

I have eaten my share of them in the past but now we use them to put the dog's daily pills in to give them to him.
