Is there a local course that you avoid or refuse to play?

It should be reasonably accessible to you.
Not just in terms of price—but if it’s expensive and the conditions or overall experience don’t justify the cost in your opinion, that’s a valid reason to include it as well.

Conditions,
pace of play,
layout,
etc.

There are a handful I avoid here in jax, 5 courses off the top of my head.
mostly due to conditions, bad greens primarily.

When my buddies ask to go out for a round, i make sure to ask where first.

If they look like this, im out.

Camarillo Springs - Location is great and has so much potential. But last 10 years with a new owner, the course is absolute a disaster.
SeaBee - Here at the Naval Base where I work... Ummm it's cheap. But I'd rather spend more to play else where.
Los Robles Greens - Minimum 5.5 hour rounds. Seems like people just go there to get drunk. Also overpriced.

GreatLIFE has ruined some nice courses here in Sioux Falls and I avoid most of their locations. The courses are never watered, play is stupid slow, and they charge $10 per golfer if your playing partner backed out. I’ve been really happy with the city pass as their courses are maintained better and it’s easier to get on. $1,200 annually for 54 holes of golf isn’t a bad deal.

One, but only the back 9.

Entfeldon. The back 9 isn't really a 9 hole course. It should be about 6 holes at most, but they jammed 9 holes in and they just aren't any good.

The front 9 is solid.

Several actually. If the pace of play is slow I will not go back, if conditions are horrendous I will not go back and if its over priced odds are i won't go back.

I will not play the par 3 in north Topeka.

Curious to hear which Jax courses you try to avoid. Last October, I randomly won a trip to Jacksonville for golf and tickets to the Packers v. Jags game which was awesome as we are Packers fans. We played Hidden Hills, which online photos looked great. Conditions were average, well below what I am used to in Wisconsin (but different climate/environment) but the course layout I thought was pretty cool.

We eventually want to make a family trip to Amelia Island with our two boys so any hidden gem/recommended courses I'd for sure take!

Yes. The course I was previously a member at, which is now under new ownership. I refuse to play it because the new owner has butchered the course layout, conditions are terrible, and he prices it like a premium course.

Closest course to me that I will not play is Baraboo Country Club. Weird layout, some really odd hole design, and just not a "memorable in the right ways" course.

And I hate to say it, but if I wasn't a member at my home course, I'd likely not play it often. Not because it isn't a great course, it is. Conditions are fantastic and it is a really fun play. But I can also go to two courses in Wisconsin Dells on weekdays and play a local rate for less than what my home club charges. Even peak weekend rates, they aren't that much more expensive.

Also paid $28 for two double transfusions last night, which is expensive as f*** for this area and a non resort type course around here.

There is a semi private place near me with no warmup/practice area, 7 min tee time spacing, tight through condos course thats never in great shape. It's double the price of other courses of higher quality around me. Somehow it's packed every single weekend. I have no idea why and refuse to play there. Almost a guaranteed 6 hr round.

Hunting Hawk has gotten a mean reputation in Central VA. Can’t even use their range anymore unless you play. They told the largest golf group in VA based out of Richmond that travels to various courses around the state (Private and public) through the year that they don’t want them there at all. The course is bottom of the courses here and doesn’t remotely fill tee sheets yet is acting like that.

There are a few that I will put at the bottom of the list and it's mostly because of course conditions being commensurate to what they are charging.

bashing your local golf course seems like a bad look. I mean you are still golfing right? Thats also someone's business, ever thought about bringing the issue up with the owner?

That picture is from Hidden Hills 😂

So HH - conditions. Layout is awesome.
south Hampton- conditions. Redoing course in 2026- will go back then.

Blue sky- conditions.

Windsor - conditions, management.

Cimerrone- layout, conditions.

Around Louisville what you pay is basically what you get. Only course I wouldn't play again is Cherokee Park. It's a 9 hole muni. It's way too tight and they basically crammed it onto not great land for a golf course, including one par 4 that is like a 30% grade dropping right to left the entire hole. Just nowhere to hit it off the tee.

Isn’t this a review thread?

LOL! None of the greens were THAT bad when we were there at least. My goodness. It seemed pretty hard to find public courses with good reviews for conditions.

Don’t throw shade!

I agree there are a few that I refuse to play at in our area. One based on conditions and the other based on slow play and how they send off morning times off front and back.

The point isn’t to bash from the opening post. It’s more an awareness thread of courses to avoid. If you own and operate a course and it’s in terrible shape, you deserve to be called out.

Im not throwing shade. They should appreciate feedback.

And that double tee start is awful.

I’m sure you know exactly the two I am referring to.

I agree with BCC, along with Union Center, and Castle Rock. Just not worth the time.

And on everything you said about our home course too: great deal as a member, but better options nearby if paying greens fees and the food/bev prices have jumped the shark.

lol I forgot about Union Center, never have played Castle Rock. Played UC back when I had zero money and didn't care as much about golf as I did drinking beer with my buddies :ROFLMAO:
