I played with a guy the other day. He hit his driver and irons about as good (or bad) as I do. But the difference was that he had an amazing short game. He got up and down about 6-7 times and probably had around 30 putts for the round. He didn't hit many GIR (I'd say close to 50%) but was able to get up and down most of the time. He was able to make a few birdies and even had one chip in for bird as well. All in all he shot in the mid 70s. So this got me to thinking and I starting talking to be brother (jonvick89) about this...
How do you think a mid to high handicapper would fair with a scratch golfers short game? In other words, say you took someone like me who typically shoots in the low 90s (bogey golf) and I hit every tee shot and every approach shot. Basically get the ball on the green or within 30 or so yards of the green. Once I get the ball close, a scratch golfer takes over until the ball is in the hole. How well do you think the score would improve? Do you think it would be drastic or just a few strokes a round?
My answer is that the scores would improve drastically. I know my best rounds are when my short game in on but I know it is different for everyone. It seems as though the vast amount of people I play with (including myself) will waste more strokes around the green. What do you guys think? Anybody have a similar experience?
