Mizuno JPX925 Hot Metal Irons – Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro and Hot Metal HL

Another round in on Sunday with the HMP with DG105 300S. I just wanted to comment on the height/ball flight as it really stood out for me. I typically have a lower flight, but these are producing a distinguishable increase in height (compared to JPX919 Forged with Recoil 95 F4), which I needed. No hard data to prove, just an observation so far.
Really cool to hear that difference...feel like its proving the tech to be true

When I had my original set of JPX900 Forged, before my 919Forged, I had the 900 Hot Metal in 4i and 5i. I didn’t love those versions of the HM (HMP didn’t exist with the 900 launch). I kind of ignored the HM/HMP subsequent launches. While the Forged was great, I think I was leaving some performance on the table by not fully testing out the HM/HMP offerings.

A little extra stopping power should result in some more GIR over time. Add in the forgiveness and you can definitely see some lower scores in the future.

The added height was definitely visible for me too. I favor a particular range that has trees lining the sides. Compared to my 923 HMP, the 925 apexes higher above the trees and gets up to altitude sooner.
I'm still in the "getting to know you" phase, so I expect to see better results as I get more consistent with them.
There were hints at what these irons are capable of. I’m sure the results will show up soon. The thing I have to fight is subconscious changes and fixes to get a familiar flight. I need to mentally let the clubs do what they were designed to do and learn to enjoy my higher flight with less curve.

Gosh I can't wait to join you all on the reviews...love what I've been reading

I never thought I’d be big on turf interaction. It seemed silly to concern myself with what happens after the ball is gone. Yet, here I am. The iron feel through the turf is so much smoother than what I’m used to. Even when I have a weird, twisting slope the club just glides through. As someone that fights arthritis I think this is becoming my favorite feel feature.

I had been seeing more straight pushes than I’m used to seeing. I want to say it was a common theme beyond just me. I have a theory and I tested out one part. I think the visuals make the toe look more raised than it is leading to a more upright shaft angle at address if I sole the club to get into position. The pic below shows the appearance behind the ball with my desired address position of shaft at my belt. I saw less straight pushes and more push baby draws. Closer to my typical flight, but not quite there.

The second part of my theory is the tungsten weighting added MOI and resists club rotation during the swing. I need some input from folks smarter than I to tell me if that’s plausible. Whatever the cause, I’m consistently seeing less draw in my flight. Very rough visual estimates put it at 3-5 yards instead of 5-10+ using my home course pin sheets as a measuring stick. To be clear, I’m happy with the results but I’m curious how I’m getting them.

Going back to size because the initial look of the 925 HMP at address surprised me a little. After a week and a half I’ve gotten comfortable with the size. It’s just a hair smaller than my 923 HMP but visually hides more than the 923 HMP did. Performance may have played a role in my quick acceptance. I don’t think these are small irons by dimensions, but I think the looks lean much closer to players than GI at address.

They have arrived! Going to try and hit the range this evening if is isn't blazing hot out. First round will be Sat unless i can make sometime during the week. I do have a lesson on Friday and i plan to get some distances on them with the trackman. The build quality looks really good and it was just over 2 weeks to receive them.

Looking great! Nice ferrule choice

First range session went well I grabbed the set GW and hit 4 of the same shots to almost the same place! I Then grabbed my 8 iron and went at a sign that was 160 out. I put a few just in front and a few just over. It is really hard to tell any distance as I was loosing light pretty quick. I hit every thing but the 9 iron for some reason lol. I tee‘d a few 7 irons up and just ripped those right down my target line.

I am getting a higher ball flight with the 925s. The feel is excellent and even know the 92 is slightly bigger in size to my Edels it was hardly noticeable to me. I am looking forward to getting some distance numbers figured out on Friday. @AZHack was at the range also and grabbed a pic of my first swing with the GW. He took a few swings with my 7 iron and caught it a bit on the toe side. The ball still had great distance!

Lovely. Hope they treat you well!

I played in 2 outings Friday and Sunday.

Given I had some big hitters in the group it was a lot of driver, then wedge shots. But I did have some decent shots with the 925 HLs.

First hole on Friday I had PW out over a bunker. Caught it thin but the ball ended up stopping quickly and ended up 6 foot from the hole and we made bird.
Also had a 6i shot that I also caught thin and it hit the middle of the green and rolled out to the back. Unfortunately we had to use my shot as nobody else was on the green.

So I can attest to their forgiveness on thinned hits.

Sunday's outing I was a mess, I was tired and we were playing in 20 mph sustained wind along with 37 mph gusts. I absolutely flushed a PW from 115 out and the ball might still be flying. we saw it bounce what looked like on the green and it was never to be seen again. Then on another hole I hit GW and the ball hit the top of the flag and ricocheted off the green. Talking about unlucky.

I still haven't had a chance to shake these down the range but will do so today at lunch time.

and forgot to add, that I think my biggest issue so far with these is not taking a divot. I threw my Altitude irons back in the bag for about 2 months and being a sweeper of the ball normally I rarely take a divot with my irons and with the Altitudes I can get away with that. With these, I am better taking a shallow divot but its hard to make yourself take a divot. I feel like the only time I can consistently take a divot is if I play the ball back in my stance and then the flight gets too low.

Can Anyone with a graphite shaft in the 925’s grab a swing weight for me ?

I wish i had that ability to help you no sw scale.

I had to turn my bag so i could eyeball my new sticks while i work today

Was able to hit 6 iron tonight. I was struggling with the 921.
The 925 has so much more forgiveness on mishits.
I am really glad I made the switch.

6 iron is my 180-190 yard club

Test Results (I hit 15 shots with each club and took the 10 best):

Had a slow aft at work so I snuck out and headed over to play 9 and try out the new 925’s. No warm up I went right to the first tee. After my drive on hole 1 I had 130 to the pin and hit the pw. I went long but was still on the green. Hole 3 is a par 3 that was 171 with a slight breeze. I grabbed the 7 and dropped it right on the green with about 3 feet of rollout from the pitch mark.

The next par 4 was a GW from 123 that I flushed right to the left of the pin about 10 feet.

What blew me away was hole 8 I used the 5 iron off the tee. It is slightly uphill the 150 marker and then it goes downhill to a very narrow area that typically is in horrible condition. A driver is too much club here. I wanted to try the 5 and just ripped the ball. I thought I was about the 150 marker but when I got up there I was about 15 yards in front of it. I left myself 137 into the green. I grabbed the 9 and went right over the bunker to the center of the green.

I think I have a rough idea on some distances for the weekend rounds. The 925 are seriously so forgiving. The sound and feel are excellent and I love the ball flight. I am definitely getting more height with the 925’s.

Hitting greens with 7i, 9i, PW, and GW, and striping a 5i off the tee, with excellent feel and flight, in just 9 holes. Great stuff!

Love it! Keep us updated.

Huge fan of these irons.

Hit the JPX 925 Hot Metals alongside my previous set of Maltby TS3 today. Figured out my swing a little compared to Briggs. Still really struggling to square the face on the 925s. They were 10-20 yards right of the Maltbys on what felt like good strikes. Maltbys flew significantly higher too, but they also have 4 degrees more loft. I added lead weight to the heel on the 8 iron just to see and it did seem to help me turn them over. That will be tonight's project before putting them in play tomorrow. One huge positive with the JPX, despite being out to the right, they kept landing in the same area no matter where I hit the face. If I can figure out the direction, I could see a huge improvement in proximity. I'll also be interested how they play on a course I'm very familiar with.
What are the shafts in the Maltby vs the 925?
