Mizuno JPX925 Hot Metal Irons – Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro and Hot Metal HL

A rare 77 degree day in November meant hitting the range more with the JPX 925 Hot Metal Pros. For sure this is the best I have felt with these irons so far. We are up to 7 iron now which felt nice to see some more distance come into play. My swing speed is feeling pretty close to "normal" too

-One takeaway I had was when you catch these irons in the middle I can really feel the compression off the face. Almost like I can feel the ball explode off. It's a feeling I enjoy and really gives me feedback that I was centered

-I tried to see if I felt a difference between the 7 iron and lower irons. I did not really feel a discernible difference. If you blindfolded me I probably would've said no difference.

-Excited to get into a Trackman studio once I'm full speed and get some carry distances. These are definitely longer than the Apex '21's I had. Can just see it coming off the face a little hotter

-The 2nd hole of the par 3 course is right next to the range. I ran over quick and a hit a couple shots with the gap wedge. It's around 130 yards. They flew really nicely...lower than I anticipated, but they had some good spin on them which I was VERY happy to see. No problem going from an SM10 508 to this JPX Gap wedge. The added ball speed on mis-hits with the wedge will only help!

They definitely feel extremely hot, but soft at the same time. Pretty cool how they were able to do that.

A little lower wedge flight is a good thing imo. Should be easier to control long term. Appreciate the feedback.

I agree I like a lower flying wedge for sure...much more control

One range session yesterday and one round today. After today’s round posts, I will be at a 12 month low index, so that’s cool. It sure as hell hasn’t been due to the putting…. I don’t have Shot Scope or Arcos stats, but I am on in regulation or just slightly off on a more frequent basis.

When I got the sticks in late Sept my index was 6.8. After todays round posts I will be a 5.6. May have to move south, like next week, to keep the good vibes going.

Nice playing @BriMac

Well done @BriMac

Those who are playing the HL. Do you see much of a distance increase with the 925's compared to the 923 or your previous clubs? I like the traditional HL lofts but think my distance suffers a bit.

I'll TLDR this first, but then have some more detail underneath. But I tested a bunch of clubs today (Mizuno Pro 243/245, JPX 925 HM, JPX 925 HM Pro, TaylorMade P790, Ping i530, Titleist T200, and my existing Edel SMS irons). Played in both the Mitsubishi MMT 105s line if it was there, or the KBS Tour Lite S shafts as not all were there with adapters. Did this across a PGASS and a Golf Galaxy. Decided on the HM Pro after looking at things like feel, peak height, ball speed and distance.

The ADHD one went through a process of testing out some irons. As I've mentioned in the Edel thread, I really launch the irons and it's coming at a distance cost. What has shown up to me, especially lately, has been that an increase in height and launch angle has caused me to lose distance. Moving the weight around to the heel would sort of pull that down, but then I also noticed my ball strike was the same. But when I saw ball contact it was usually too high middle. Spinned was also low on that, so it was a weird combo for me.

So I went through the players distance brands and started isolating the ones I wanted to try. My main focus was ball height more than spin (I generate spin pretty nicely already, so I'm not worried about that number). I just wanted peak height and descent angle to be in a better window.

I quickly ruled out the 243, mishits were brutal for me. And they weren't major misses. When it came down to it, the standard HM and the P790 were very similar in launch for me. Both felt really good, though the 790 did feel better. I ruled the i530 out for myself because I just didn't like the feel as much. The T200 was out to an early lead, but I saw a used set from this season and how the back was sort of chipping/peeling and for whatever reason that made me nervous. I will say all of them did some of the other things I like, which is be more audible of a mishit so I know what happend, feel soft and not too clicky, etc.

Two things jumped out to me.
1. Ball speed, even on mishits. It just jumps out there. I was seeing really good ball speed on that for me out of a 7i without compromising height
2. Height was in a much better window. I saw a peak of 105', and that was on my normal mishit higher middle of the face. But the rest sat more comfortably in the 95' foot range for me on the 7 iron.

So yeah, after all of that it just sort of fit. Going to the HM Pro dropped the height window just enough for me to get the proper distance and height that I would be able to hold greens properly. The drop down to the Mitsubishi shaft (from my existing Nippon Modus Tour 120s) actually let me maintain better swing speed.

So yeah. That sort of happened.

Great breakdown! I have the P790s and the HMP. I really enjoyed the P790s, but you'll be able to see a few data posts I have in here.. the HMP performance continues to impress me. Amazing irons.

There was a used set of 925 HMPs at Edwin Watts today. Steel shafts, but took a few swings anyway. Launch is impressive with these irons. I was hitting some really high shots, which is not the norm for me. I was also surprised at how forgiving the HMP was. I expected it with the HM, but expected the HMP to be more penalizing. That wasn’t really the case. I hit some poor shots and didn’t lose much distance at all. These irons are impressive.

Played a round today on a soggy course that was in terrible shape. Hot Metals were excellent all day. The "fairways" were either 4" tall wet grass or mud, but the turf interaction was great. Still struggling to dial in distances at times. I don't know if it's the cooler weather, or what, but it seems like sometimes the ball will go 20 yards different on similar strikes. I hit a 150 yard PW on #4 and flew the green, then pulled PW on a 140 yard par 3 with helping wind and came up 15 yards short on an absolutely middled strike. It's something I'll continue to keep an eye on. Toe strikes continue to impress. The other thing that continues to stand out is a dead straight ball flight. I usually hit a fade with every club, but these just want to fly straight. Golf is coming to a close in these parts, so I'll be waiting for warm days or going indoors to continue getting some swings in.

In this instance its probably moisture and muck filling in the grooves creating less spin

Yea there's all kinds of variable that can come into play there, but a flyer impacting spin is the most likely reason. I haven't seen any wild variations on clean lies.

Same here - I haven’t seen any wild distance variations from clean lies that would cause me any concern about an unexplained nuked shot off a presumed hot part of the face.

I know it's going to take a bit. But this whole waiting on clubs is the worst.

I feel that. Especially with the outdoor season's end coming so soon.

I did a custom order from Golf Galaxy that only took about 2 weeks. I was pretty happy with that. What’s the expected total timing of your order?

It's so close to it. Thankfully the dome is open to practice, but I'd love to get a round in.

I was told 3 weeks but we will see, that seemed to be conservative

Took off work yesterday and played another 18 at a course that was in a little better shape. I continue to be impressed with the flight of the Hot Metals. I hit them high and straight. I expect the ball to turn at times on mishits and it goes straight. Still seeing some variance in distances at times and I really want to figure out what's causing it. Could be something between the grooves and the ball, but it was fairly clean lies most of the day yesterday and still had some well struck shots that just flew differently. That's something I will continue to look into, especially with winter approaching. I plan to get on a simulator several times and there should be far less variables hitting off of mats. One thing I do like about these irons is the turf interaction, especially for a wider sole. I have played in soft conditions and fairways that were as hard as the parking lot, and haven't really had any issues. They've definitely done something right with that.

The most important thing to note is my GIR and proximity have been better since putting these in the bag. Some of that may be swing related, but I don't think it's a coincidence. According to Shot Scope, I have gained strokes on approach on 4 out of the last 5 rounds I've played since the Victory Cup. I was losing 2.5 strokes approach for the season before gaming these so that's a pretty significant improvement. My scores haven't been much better, but I have also been putting worse than I ever have in my life because the greens suck right now. If my putting gets back to normal and I continue the upward trend with these irons, I should be able to significantly lower scores in 2025.

Hitting more greens almost always initially impacts your putting stats unfortunately. Love to see that bump in your strokes gained on approach. Significant is a very good way to put it.

Got out and played 9 Friday and Monday at my local track. Didn't have my best stuff but managed a 41 and 43.
I find myself struggling with the HL 6i. On the range I absolutely love it but on the course I am not sure what is going on and I keep hitting it fat.

Yesterday, I brought a long a Cleveland HB Turbo 6i to do some back to back comparisons since the course was dead.
The Turbo I had no issues with. I would either hit the Green or hit it pin high but just off. The HL pretty much every shot was duffed.

All I can figure is maybe the transition from a 62g hybrid shaft in my 5h to my irons being 95g might be too big of a change.
The Turbo I was playing has a graphite C Kua 65g shaft in it for reference.

Or maybe I just hit a hybrid style iron better in the 6i slot as 7i on down with the HL's has been very positive.
GIR %
6i - 32%
7i - 88%
8i - 42%
9i - 50%
PW-60%
GW-83%

Going to continue working at it but its been frustrating especially after seeing what it can do on the range.

Hitting greens has definitely led to more 3 putts. Couple weeks ago I had 5 straight GIR, with three 3-putt bogeys and a 4-putt double. I would rather chip it off the green from 30ft than use a putter because I'm far more confident with a wedge in hand. Getting myself in position to score will eventually pan out and I'm excited to see how the scores come down.
