Mizuno JPX925 Hot Metal Irons – Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro and Hot Metal HL

Do you think the forgiveness advantage offsets any distance loss due to weaker lofts?
I mean they’re still stronger lofted than most. So you may lose distance to the standard hot metal but still have more distance than other sets.

That's good to know.

I have an iron fitting scheduled at the PGA Superstore tomorrow, and want to try the Mizzy JPX925s, especially the HL, as I am a more "mature" golfer now, and do not swing as fast as I used to 20 years ago. consequently, I need help getting more height on my irons.

I also want to try the Callaway Smoke HL, as I have heard lots of good things about it.

And maybe the Ai300? 😁

It's possible you see a little less distance than you might if you're getting excessive roll, but it should be useable/controllable distance.

I was able to go to a local golf store after work and hit a LH 7 iron HMP today. I’ve never gotten decent spin, launch, and landing angle off mats but the numbers scared me they were crazy low. The club felt beautiful though, I thought I hit alot great shots. I know I should ignore this as my Apex CF19s do the same at this store off the mats and the Bridgestone ball or rock they use. I have no problem launching my CF19s and holding greens with the Callaway CTX I use.

Anyways, started with the Recoil Dart 90S and honestly felt it was too light. I don’t like light shafts in irons, feel like its OTT or pulls etc.

Switched to the MMT 105S and immediately liked the weight and hit better shots. Felt I was banging off the heel a bit causing a pull, same with the Darts too.

Guy came by and I asked if they had the Mizuno Optimizer, he said yes so he went and got the tablet. Amazingly, the results confirmed the best graphite shaft for me was the MMT 105S. Top 3 shafts just for kickers were these which would just destroy my elbows.

- NS Pro Modus 115 S
4.90
118g
- PROJECT X LZ 6.0
- 4.90
120g
- NS Pro Modus 120 S
4.70
114g

Optimizer also recommended 1* flat, another feel I felt hitting balls.

I’m thinking about this, if I can just ignore the low spin and landing angle numbers and go with how the club felt, I’ll pull the trigger tomorrow. The deal is too good with the shaft.

Oh, the Optimizer also recommended no lower than a 6 iron which is what I play now and would order. I go hybrids 5,4 etc.
I swear fittings should be outside on grass, I absolutely despise mats.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the Optimizer. It spit out totally different numbers at 2 different fitting sessions.

This site is detrimental to my bank account. Off to the range.

Booked some trackman studio time tomorrow to get numbers for these irons...had been playing more by feel, so I'll report back!

Enjoy! Wish we had better weather so I could swing mine more. It's just not the same indoors.

It's not. And I found the Top Tracer places by me really are way off on distance. Makes me even more depressed.

Did you use “ball normalization” ? Used for practice range balls…….

I haven't seen that. But it makes sense why I see a 10+% decrease in distances. The callaway balls they use are destroyed to hell.

Also if there's any kind of particular data anyone would like to see please let me know!

My foray into the 925 series is over.
I took a lesson yesterday and got my Irons back on track.
245's are staying in the bag, not that that is a bad thing. When I hit them flush, there is no comparison to the HL's
It's kinda a depressing as I'm thinking that I can always buy a game however I've become a bit like @mr.hicksta and decided to halt the bag changes and work on a better swing.

Edit: See @mr.hicksta - I read your Thread...

I hit the 925 HLs today, and, while they were very accurate, I lost too much distance to put them in my bag.

They were high and straight, though - I'll give 'em that! 🙂

I spent hours at the range with the new 925 HM today, my buddy works at the range and just kept feeding me free baskets of balls. These are the sweetest irons I've ever hit. The feel of the face is soft but not overly soft if that makes sense. The dispersion was insane. Everything seemed to want to go straight, which is fine. The distance dispersion was also amazing. I was really on the fence between HM and HL but thrilled I went with the HM as I was getting fantastic launch, apex, and descent angles. They have such a beautiful ball flight that you just want to stare at it. Also, they feel so solid, with no twisting or anything like that, hats off to Mizuno for the craftsmanship and quality that went into these irons.

I'm playing tomorrow as I'm fortunate to live in Florida and it's supposed to be in the 70s, my heart goes out to those in cold weather climates that can't stretch out the 925s. I'm sure there will be an adjustment period but for the first time in a long time, I'm really excited about a set of irons. Oh, and they look fantastic also!

Went to my nearby Trackman studio to hit some irons today. I am bummed I forgot to bring the RCT balls I own, because this place has a short area from hitting area to screen, and all of the spin numbers were calculated based on the launch metrics, not the real and true spin. We can fight that fight somewhere else on how accurate or not it may be, but I'll have to go back next week and see what kind of difference I see with RCT balls and more accurate spin.

I hit 5 shots with each club for this test, and didn't remove any. I had a few fat shots which you'll notice on the data, but overall my ball speeds were pretty consistent and fast. Some takeaways for me:

-spin with the GW was DEFINITELY higher than what I see on course. There wasn't an option to pick a GW and I don't see 8000-9000 RPM's even on a "traditional" 50 degree. That definitely shortened up the flight from normal.
-The spin numbers overall are probably a tick higher than what I see, again I'll grab more data with a RCT ball
-The 4, 5, and 6 got a little clumped together - curious for me if that's gonna need any tweaking. Not to harp on spin, but I think it's related. I'm not spinning my 5 iron at 4900 in real life and my 6 iron only 100 rpms more...something wonky there
-The good shots for 7-PW felt the most accurate to what I see outside for carry numbers

Well my maiden voyage went very well. They're a lot more forgiving then I thought they would be. The dispersion, feel and forgiveness were the highlights. No trouble holding greens with long clubs.
I figure if I lose any SS I could always weaken the lofts as I have a world renowned club maker who lives down the block from me.
But for now they're perfect and got a lot of compliments from playing partners for looks and performance.

I went to PGASS after my round looking for a Mizuno T24 wedge but they didn't have any so I picked a 54* CBX4 that should fit in well. Playing again tomorrow so will see how the second round goes. I'm stoked about these irons.

Got in a sim round today at Cypress Pointe. HLs were working pretty well. This sim doesn’t have putting so it’s a 1 putt if you get within 6 feet of the pin. 2 putt within 20’. 3 putt anything longer than 20’. Put a PW and GW in tight for two of the 3 birdies.IMG_1663.jpeg

Some more follow up thoughts after a nights sleep:

-The ball speed I get (and smash factor, kind of one in the same) is so so good. I mean popping 1.48 and 1.49 with a 4 iron is awesome. And through the 6, 7, and 8 iron staying in the 1.4 and high 1.3's is great for me. And there are some fat shots and mis-hits thrown in. Really shows the consistency of the ball speeds produced all over the face.
-I went in my Trackman App to find more data. Found the height for all of these shots and took the averages:
GW: 86.4 ft
PW: 92.8 ft
9i: 101.8 ft
8i: 102.8 ft
7i: 100 ft
6i: 98.8 ft
5i: 98.6 ft
4I: 75.8 ft
Only real outlier there is the 4 iron being lower, but the consistency of height with the rest is spot on. And based on what I've seen outside and some scenarios I've faced, I've been able to get more height out of it when I needed to. Very pleased with these peak heights. I wish landing angles were saved for all of them.
-Also, as someone who is working on having my normal flight be a small controllable cut, pretty pleased with my dispersions. Especially when you add the fact I went from GW up so my longer clubs were on the tail end. Misses will happen, but besides hitting them fat, none of them were drastically short

Those 925's are working well for you. You are very consistent through each club!

They've been really great so far! I really love how they can give me a lot of forgiveness when I'm not spot on with them. Excited to keep working them in this winter and get into some competition golf with them next spring and summer

The forgiveness is crazy good i need all the help i can get. I wish i could get your height. I just get over 90 or so i cant break that 100 mark.

I've always been a high ball player, so lucky for me heights never been an issue. The fact that all of them besides the 4 iron were within 10 or so feet of each other was pretty cool

And will also probably make me ponder if I should experiment with a fli-hi in that spot
