Mizuno JPX925 Hot Metal Irons – Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro and Hot Metal HL

Some more follow up thoughts after a nights sleep:

-The ball speed I get (and smash factor, kind of one in the same) is so so good. I mean popping 1.48 and 1.49 with a 4 iron is awesome. And through the 6, 7, and 8 iron staying in the 1.4 and high 1.3's is great for me. And there are some fat shots and mis-hits thrown in. Really shows the consistency of the ball speeds produced all over the face.
-I went in my Trackman App to find more data. Found the height for all of these shots and took the averages:
GW: 86.4 ft
PW: 92.8 ft
9i: 101.8 ft
8i: 102.8 ft
7i: 100 ft
6i: 98.8 ft
5i: 98.6 ft
4I: 75.8 ft
Only real outlier there is the 4 iron being lower, but the consistency of height with the rest is spot on. And based on what I've seen outside and some scenarios I've faced, I've been able to get more height out of it when I needed to. Very pleased with these peak heights. I wish landing angles were saved for all of them.
-Also, as someone who is working on having my normal flight be a small controllable cut, pretty pleased with my dispersions. Especially when you add the fact I went from GW up so my longer clubs were on the tail end. Misses will happen, but besides hitting them fat, none of them were drastically short

You are seeing some of the same issues with the 4i that I am. It just seems to really miss the overall window and the distance isn't what I am hoping for. Thankfully I've got a Ping G430 hybrid at 19* that I'm switching to, or maybe my Apex UW...but 4i is hitting 5i distance so far.

I haven't gotten a lot of golfing rounds with it so far, and truly I haven't minded the height in those rounds. I only had a couple approach shots with a 4 iron so far. I do appreciate it's use off the tee at that height.

It may become a bigger ponder the more I gather data and when I get into spring golf. If I find enough scenarios where I'm needing 4 iron and I can't hold a green then I'll probably experiment to see if the fli-hi proves to round things out.

But it definitely stuck out a little on initial data here! And with reading some of the guys in the Victory Cup finding the fli-hi really useful for them it has me intrigued.

Anybody with any i530 experience have any input on how these two irons sets compare in terms of forgiveness?
I would also be interested in this.........

I am kinda hoping that Ping reverses the trend of raising the VCoG in their "G" line. They did lower it a bit in the G430 compared to the G425, but then they went all crazy strong on the lofts. And the newer G730 is actually .881 which is more like a players iron Vcog-wise.
G730 - .881 VCog
G430 - .835
G425 - .890
G410 - .846
G400 - .819
2016 G - .793
G30 - .863
G25 - .799
G20 - .815
G15 - .787
G10 - .809

The G25 and G15 are considered some of Ping's best "G" irons. Go figure, they have some of the lowest vertical centers of gravity in that line.
Looking forward to finding out more about the G440 irons.

Top Tracer results today as I went through to kind of compare the 19* 4i, G430 19* hybrid and a 21* Apex UW. Just part of the convo I might not have the swing speed anymore to consistently hit that as an iron. I could hit a few good ones, but it lacks consistency. For my Florida trip I’ll put in the UW because it offered the best peak height.

One of the things that make these extremely attractive compared to its competitors is that you can upgrade the shaft and grips at no cost. Even the graphite options are not extra. Compared to something like Ping G430, who charges insane amounts for graphite shafts outside of their own Ping Alta shafts, Mizuno makes a compelling value proposition.

They really have quite the large offering of shafts and grips at no up charge…really appreciate that and it helps set them apart

it was a big part of my reasoning as well. Going to the MMT shafts that I like a lot without an up charge made a big difference to me.

And folks say it a lot, but it’s true. Nothing feels quite like a Mizuno.

What would be a good Fli-hi hybrid to fill the 5 iron spot? The 19* or 22*?

The 22 would be the same loft as the 5 iron for the hot metal and hot metal pros

One thing that stands out for me is consistency with distances. I haven’t experienced the occasional nuked iron shot that comes out of nowhere. No 205 yard 7 iron head scratchers. It had been a concern moving into this head profile (HMP) - that concern is no longer warranted for me.

I agree with you 100% here…especially when trying to hit a knockdown or take some off, I can still really control the distance with them even though they’re designed to be hot

Kind of curious. are you folks with these irons using X balls? For more spin?

I’ve been using an X ball…I’ll always elect towards one for short game spin, but it certainly does help with the irons as well. I’ll take the added spin

Staff model has been good but feeling like the way these irons are I may benefit from a little X in my life. Thanks for this.

These irons continue to impress. 3 rounds in and OMG they're the real deal. Even chipping with the wedges are fantastic. There is something very symmetrical with these irons, I can't explain it but everything about them is solid.

Unless you’re a super high spin player I feel like the X model of a ball can be pretty beneficial for these irons

I use an X model ball. I need all the height and spin I can get.

I’ve tried both. It’s kind of a toss up for me. I didn’t get enough good weather to finalize my choice but I’m leaning towards a non-X ball. With a non-X I’m above 1k x (club number - 1) with irons. My ball lands heavy and an X can show some backspin in numbered irons at times. I don’t want to introduce that possibility so I don’t think I’ll play an X next season.

The lands heavy remark lands. It’s a heavy impact to say the least.

My latest rounds have been with the Volvik XT Soft and Vice Pro/Pro Plus balls. I'm getting similar results from either ball.

Had my fitting on Friday, 11/22. Then my back blew out on Sunday, 11/24, and I've been down ever since. My new JPX 925 HM's arrived on Thursday, 12/5. Wonderful order fulfillment by Mizuno, at least. Maybe I'll even be able to swing them some day (I am improving a tiny bit each day). I got 7-GW with Recoil Dart ESX F2 shafts. Going with Jumbo grips (which I'll install myself if I can ever recover enough to stand in my garage).

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts…cheers to a speedy recovery!

Thanks! The 925's are replacements for my 919HM's (still have them). I'm excited to see the true differences between them, which IMHO can only truly be seen out on the course.
