Mizuno Releasing JPX 921 Irons: Full Preview

From a technical sense, this isn't too uncommon as the full fitting and testing embargo is the 24th of this month. Clubs are beginning to ship to fitting centers and media now, we just happened to get some early access in full due to some content we are working on.
Ohhh, so my fitting being changed to the 28th could be fate. :p

Here are some basic thoughts..

First of all, the Tours are outstanding. I think their presentation and audible profile have both been notably improved from 919. With that in mind, they are a very demanding iron, which sets them well apart from the others in this collection. From my own personal perspective, I wouldn't compare them to the rest in the set. They are the 921 Tours and they are their own entity.

The Hot Metal are great. The most offset of the bunch, and chunkier than the bunch, but hardly chunky from the category they represent. Very visually pleasant and sound is well considered with the uncut profile, the material, etc etc. I wasn't shocked after hitting 919, but they absolutely met expectations. Not my favorite by any means, but I'm confident they will be preferred by many golfers looking for great feel and swing support.

The Hot Metal Pro are exactly what I thought they would be - which is kind of shocking because I had MASSIVE expectations for them coming off 919. I did not hold back my fascination with the sound quality, and the results typically spoke for themselves. I think they subtle design changes are wonderfully complimentary to improvements without reducing anything that was massively important to me from the last release (sound, and launch). I hit the 4 iron on the sim first, before anything else, and uttered "oh my god" as soon as the ball left the head. The feedback was brilliant.

The Forged are last here for a reason. They are special. Hugely fresh in concept, sizing has improved, shaping has improved, and the results spoke volumes about how much tech/design has come for a company like Mizuno. I'd game them in a heartbeat and tell my local guys (who demand I play MBs) to get over it. I see no reason why they could not compliment golfers in a significant range of skill.

I can't speak on GC Quad data for the time being specifically, but I love that this set is similar to the MP-20 lineup where I feel like I could easily blend at any point without fear of significant changes in results from head style to head style in the blend. It's SO welcomed, because if I were to game a set, I feel like I'd absolutely have to have at least two heads represented (HMP, Forged).

Has the heel to toe length been shortened on the 921 Forged- a little more compact? What shafts did you test them in? What type of offset do they have? Thanks.

One had Nippon 120s.
Two had the DG 105s.
One had the Tour V 110.

It definitely looked a touch more compact, but I'm just going off memory, I didn't have them side by side. It looks TIDY.
Offset is more prevalent in the Hot Metal (as described in the article in the OP) and less prevalent as you make your way to the tour.

Here's the crazy part as I read back my own comments... I really, REALLY like the Tours. I've been pondering MBs all year long and they make perfect sense.

....but the way I felt about Forged and HMP is SO compelling for what their profiles represent. I had no intentions to prefer them. I had no reason to prefer them (until I hit them). Mizuno has simply continued their JPX quality, and done so with a bit of an exclamation point.

It seems like the Forged is definitely a step forward. I remember many felt like the 919 was a “jack of all trades,” in that it did many things well, but did not seem outstanding in any area. This version seems to be catching people’s attention.

I am crazy excited for you to hit the forged.

Just when I had my heart set on the 770’s the forged sound and look like a great options. By the way, excellent write up @Molten. Very well written

Does the 921 Forged come with a set specific "specialist" gap wedge or is it using the one with the HM/HMP??

Great write-up Gary....so many choices to try out with the new lineup. Always admired the Mizuno lineup but timing, cost and opportunity just never aligned. Add in the new Taylormade irons recently announced 🔥, going to be some great options for anyone looking for new irons in 2021. Can’t wait to see Callaway’s replacement for the Apex lineup.

Giving this one a bit of a nudge for the morning crew.

Thanks for posting this, I remembered this chart from when I watched the video myself, and what caught my eye was that the 921F are virtually the same in head length as the 919F until you get to the 9 and PW, then there is a noticeable difference.

The 919F had their own gap wedge that was in the same design as the remainder of the 919F. After listening and watching the youtube video with Mizuno and various fitters, it look to be the same in the 921. I am not using the GW in the 919. I prefer something more blade-like in a 48-50 or so degree club. I get better performance in a MP T20 48 deg wedge than the set's GW. More solid, better feel, distance, without any downturn in consistency from a blade.

It looks to me in the set picture that the 921F gap wedge is different than the rest of the set....

Great reviews! These irons are something sharp!! Really want to give them a test, and pumped to see the SEL!

That’s great to hear (and see). Can’t wait to hear about your performance reviews of each. My first set of forged irons was a set of MX-20’s longer ago than I care to admit and I’m sooo hoping I still have enough game to play these....

Odd I know ( but then again not odd if you ever met me ) but I had a dream that someone tried to sell me the 921 Forged and I kept getting the Tours over and over. He then would making me hit them on the range and I was flailing them left and right and the entire driving range was laughing at me. Rediculous dream but proof that those 921 Forged have been on my mind. :)

Some really good stuff from @Canadan above on each set.

From the UK. Please excuse the blokes northern accent. Worth a watch.

It's a good wedge. And it's fine on bump and runs. My thoughts on it would be different if I had a 122g Nippon shaft in it instead of a 80g or 90g graphite shaft.

I believe that I like those ferrules.
