So I'm sure a lot of you noticed the guys in the yellow vest that had the term Mobile Device Enforcement on it. They appeared to be scanning the crowd monitoring for picture taking and such.

yet I saw many blatant instances of guys taking video/pictures of swings with their smart phones during play. Most times it was on the tee or when the shot went into the gallery. So my question is what were they enforcing. I know you can't catch everyone, but when it's as obvious as it was in some of the final groups I would think they would be stopping that.

I know several THP'ers have been to some recent events, anyone see anybody reprimanded for taking video.

They did this last year at the PGA Championship in Rochester and I can tell you they try to enforce it. But they are outnumbered as there is only a handful of them versus thousands of spectators. If I remember correctly they were told to warn people ( I volunteered and they discussed this at the training) as many time as possible before taking them away. The 18th on Sunday as Dufner was wrapping the Championship up - everyone had their cellphone out and was taking pictures. At that point, I think they are throwing their hands up in the aire because what are they going to do?

I also think they started to enforce that people keep them on silent rather then trying to take them away as it creates a fiasco trying to keep inventory of them and then getting them back to people.

yep, good point. It's kind of like Chevy Chase trying to stop the leak in the Hoover damn with bubble gum. Definitely a losing battle, yep a throw up your hands moment I'm sure.

I'm afraid its a lost cause, I couldn't believe the amount of people taking pics/vids when I was at Congressional. You'd think golf fans would have a little more respect than that, but I'm convinced that half of the "fans" attending these events couldn't care less about golf, they just want to see famous people and hopefully make it on TV.

Spot on. Having attended the US Open (and regular tour events at Congressional, you pretty much nailed that crowd as well).

Yesterday, it was obvious some of the shots of the guys right behind the players, that they all they cared about was getting seen on TV, by some of their mannerism's when the camera was on them. But I agree it's most likely a lost cause.

I noticed last year it was pretty frequent you'd hear caddies yell out, put the phone away or no pictures. You don't hear that as much this year.

Golf a game of integrity yet spectators who many are golfers consistently display none.

Bingo..

Kevin, copy and paste that thought into many threads..ha

What was it like in Pinehurst? I'm sure you saw this violated rampantly down there. Was there an attempt to curb it.

There were violation yes, but honestly as marshals we just told people to either put the phone away or leave the grandstands. As volunteers we were authorized to bring in a phone, but only on days we worked.

When I've volunteered it was always the following, "I can't and I won't take your phone away as I don't have that authority to do so. That guy behind me with the badge though? He happens to be a cop and he does have that ability, so you might want to put it away before he comes over and makes you get it from lost and found."

Never had someone argue or fight it. They would just panic and put it away fast and say thanks for the heads up.

I volunteered at the AT&T National last year. We didn't have any of these people but between the marshalls and those of us from AT&T who were assigned a hole were instructed to remind the people of the policy but no one had their phones taken away even for blatant abuse, each time they were warned by one of the volunteer staff. The only people that had their phones/cameras taken away were those that were caught by two of Tiger's security detail whose only job was to lok for those who were not following the policy. These two guys were also taking phones away from people while Tiger was on the range.

Somehow I figured this would be the one exception of people that had their phones taken :)

They were hardcore. They came out in black tactical pants, boots and yellow polo. Their only goal was to take a camera with no warning. It was funny, on the range there were 2 state police officers pretty much all day. 5 minutes before he got to the range 6 more officers showed up then in front of Tiger were these two guys and at least a half dozen course staff/volunteers.

I saw them write warnings to a few folks.

When I attended the PGA Championship at Medinah in the late '90's, they had a mandatory cell phone check kiosk at the entry. Of course, this was when only a fraction of people had a cell phone and when they didn't have the email/camera options. It worked well.

Do the same obnoxious people who yell "In the hole" and "baba booey" also take photos in the backswing? Perhaps.

What is done at Augusta? I can't imagine cell phones being allowed there.

I've honestly never understood why a silenced phone taking a picture without flash is a problem.

Probably like everything else, one idiot screwed it up by leaving the clicking sound on or using flash.

They're not. You go through metal detectors before you ever really enter onto the property.

If you're dumb or inebriated enough to try something there, you're escorted off property and your badge is taken away from you. They write down that badge number and the owner of it is pretty much banned from ever coming back. If you won it through the lottery system, you're obviously banned from that. If you got it through a ticket broker or someone who is lucky enough to have a badge every year, THEY get their badge taken away. Good luck with that retribution from them.

Unreal. As if Stevie wasn't enough to scare anyone who dare pull a phone out in the past.

The entourage he had inside the ropes at Oakmont qualified as a small business. It took them all several minutes to move into place.

I actually said golf a game of integrity. Obeying rules even if people aren't watching. It's as simple as this. On the back of tickets it says cell phones prohibited.

It is the same way at Congressional. It's a crazy mess how many people are with him. 3-4 extra cops on the course, several staff from the course, a couple volunteers and not to mention the 3-4 still photographers. From what I saw of Stevie last year with Adam he is no different than with Tiger.

Dumb rules are meant to be broken.

What harm does taking a picture do? Why do people in golf want to do everything in their power to turn away casual fans?

I think they should just tazer everyone who gets caught, and the idiots who shout dumb things like a jackass.

Shut up follow the rules and move on, it's simple.

Well said, not even a warning in my opinion. You should know as an adult going in there what is acceptable. You should just get punched straight in the kissa

At the 2011 Open. I didn't even try and follow anyone. I camped out in the bleachers on 16 all day. So the green of that hole and the tee shots on 17. With a concession stand and porta johns 100 yards away. Was a great two days.

There was photographers everywhere that I went, telephoto lens and if they are allowing them to be there what's the big deal. I saw many on the course using the iphone's, I did take pictures on the practice areas which was permitted.
