Most OVERrated Golfer Ever

Your tennis comparison made me wonder. Are there any golfers who could compare to Nadal’s clay dominance? Where they were dominant on a particular course or course setup, but couldn’t translate this into wider overall success? (Although Nadal has clearly transcended clay and achieved success across the sport.
You could say that Tom Watson was a links specialist, 5 Open Championships, an almost victory in 2009 and 3 Senior Open Championships.

Brooks Koepka? (Ducks thrown tomatoes)

If he doesn’t start winning again soon I have to agree.

If he was as good as he was hyped up to be he'd have way more than 2 majors. 20 Top 5's..... TWENTY, and he only closed out 2. smh

That was my thinking too. He seemed to be the favorite in every tournament for a while, and blew several chances in majors.

I know he's won a ton of money, but I'm surprised Charles Howell III hasn't been mentioned. Only 3 tour wins for the guy.
Dude is a $ making machine but I don't recall any hype about him.

Trying to put personal bias aside I think
PGA - Kuchar
LPGA- Gulbis

honorable mention Pat Perez & Lexi Thompson

As much as I like her, I'd have to go with Michelle Wie on the LPGA side. So much hype so young, and then one Major and four other Tour wins. Natalie Gulbis had fewer wins, but nowhere near the hype Michelle got.

Greg Norman in majors:
Won 2
(1986 & 1993 Open Ch.)
Otherwise - 30 Top 10's, 20 Top 5's, 4x 3rd place, 8x 2nd place
And he did have the Saturday Slam in 1986 (held the lead in all 4 majors after 54 holes)
As noted he only won the Open that year

Simple question Mark UK - If he was really that good, and not overrated, wouldn't he have won more than 2?
If your only focusing on majors but he was the World #1 for 6 years in a row. So by Definition he was the best player. Just because he didn't win more of 4 specific tournaments doesn't diminish what he accomplished.

My analogy would be is Dan Marino over rated since he never won a Sb? And he only went to 1.

When I think over rated I think of players like Ty Tyron and Michelle Wie who never live up to the hype that precedes them.

I'd have to look back at Norman's failures to close and see how many he choked away and how many times another golfer just played better in the final round.

A few here...

IJP - he has wins but nothing in majors and gets alt of following.

Lee Westwood because his rise was amazing and then (insert fart noise here). Nothing andnno majors.

Agree with the like Donald as he is non-existent.

Steve Stricker gets so much love as such a great putter. Seems like a good dude but So overrated.

I don't know about ever, but lately? DJ, without a doubt. I know he has 1 win a year for a bunch of years, but beyond that he is an also ran a lot, and gets pumped up like he is Tiger part 2.

I thought this for a little while, but this has to be similar to a Greg Norman situation. If you're basing it on major wins, sure, overrated because he only has 1. But if looking at total wins, he's had a very successful career. Could he have won more? Yes probably, but he has still won a fair share of tournaments, seeing as how difficult it is to win a tournament week in and week out

Not a good analogy IMO. Football is a team sport to the extreme with 25 starters and more than twice that on the active rosters.

I agree he has had a good career, but he is hyped like he has had a GREAT career and that he is a threat every tournament. No doubt he is a good player, I just think he is hyped to more than he is.

Aaron Baddeley.
I remember all the hype and him doing commercials, etc. but it never seemed to transfer to wins.
I was gonna say him too along with Ricky Barnes.

But of the top guys, sadly, Fowler. Probably my favorite player today but he just doesn't get it done.

I am always pulling for Ricky Barnes to get his first win on Tour. I remember him finishing 2nd behind Lucas Glover in the 2009 US Open at Bethpage. Barnes now has 308 PGA tour starts without a win.
