I also think it's funny to hear the arguments of "well I hit my 20 year old blades just the same that I do the latest blades" --- yeah no duh - I don't expect your scratch friend to see massive gains on changing iron sets because generally speaking, tech in clubs isn't exactly geared in total toward that kind of player. The greater benefits are for the heads that support forgiveness and distance vs their player heads.
I also think part of the reason for sentiments like this are that there aren't huge differences between new and old clubs, so in any given round, the old clubs could perform better than the new clubs simply because you made better swings. I could play two rounds, one with my modern GI irons, and one with my dad's 1980s blades, and I reckon there would be close to a 50% chance I'd score better with the 1980s blades. I have little doubt that I am better off with my modern GI irons, but in any given round, day to day variance is going to be the overwhelming factor as to how well you play.
