Oakmont is going to be brutal

You think Bryson noticed?
To make a good shot out of rough like that you have to have a lot of CHS. For example, for some reason the rough is deep and thick on my home course, and it can be difficult to find the ball, let alone hit it. On one shot, I had 95 yards to the green and had to lay-up with a LW.

I watched Bryson's video yesterday, the day he played it , it seemed to be wet and slow.

The rough around some of those greens if they are baked out, man it's going to be insane.

Someone always plays well because they hit 16 GIRs and avoid major problems.

But there are gonna be guys shooting 85 also

The women last weekend would agree about Erin Hills

I didn't watch much of the event, but that 18th hole looked like an abomination. The winner chipped away from the hole from like 25yds away that Sunday pin was so ridiculous.

There were a couple of holes where the pin had no business being. I am all for a test but to drive the green and then three putt because of the pin location and green conditions is stupid imo.

It's gonna be so much fun to watch!!

I hope it’s as tough as everyone thinks it may be. I’m ready to watch some golf course brutality!

It's a test of all your skills, including having the smarts and discipline to not try to drive the green just because you can.
I think they set that hole up to tempt in the heat of the moment. Most who layed up had a birdie opportunity. The one's who drove it often bogeyed or worse.

While I don't disagree, and the hole where driving the green was an option, there were plenty of putts where the players barely tapped the ball and it rolled off the green

This is going to be carnage for a lot of players

As he announced on the video this was in early May, when this area was going through a colder, and wetter than normal stretch. I live in NE Ohio and Oakmont is not that far away. It's an easy drive.

And if you study the history of the course you would find that Henry C. Fownes, who built the course, made big money in the iron and steel business, eventually selling out to Andrew Carnegie. In his 40's with a pile of money in the bank, and being a golfer, what do you think he did? He went to Scotland and Ireland and played all the classic links courses. When he got back he didn't think any of the local area courses measured up. So he bought a hunk of farmland with the full intention of creating the hardest golf course in the entire world!

I didn't realize May 31 was early May. 🤷‍♂️

Yes. There should be one tournament every year that is. And they're not making Oakmont be artificially brutal. Being Oakmont is enough. I was there in 2010 for the U.S. Women's Open. Scary place. Errors will be penalized.

it's going to be insane.
Besides having the lowest score, with winner will also have the highest patience IQ. I read an interview with Jack N a number of years ago. He said before the start of one US Open a lot of guys were complaining, saying how hard the course was, etc. Nicklaus figured he only had 20 guys to beat to win it.

I love the u.s. open. I get tired of the 20 something under par winning tournaments. The pga championship lost their "glory's last shot" moving to May. us open will always be my favorite. Hated Erin Hills when Brooks went really low to win!

I know this may be considered blasphemy. But I have been watching a bunch of videos about Oakmont, and read a bunch of stuff. I get this course is hard. It is probably the hardest course there is. Which is crazy because there is basically no water.

BUT, after watching a bunch. This course is way overrated. I think it is flat and uninteresting except for being super hard.

After hearing how all they want to do is basically make everyone look like the average “shooter” at my local muni, I won’t even bother watching. Who wants to watch crap golf?? I like to see GOOD shots, I do t care about the score being low. As I’ve said before, if I want to see guys hacking it out of the rough for a 9, I’ll go to my local muni I with a 12 pack and sit on a bench.

I’ve heard 5” thick dense rough, narrow fairways and stump readings of 15. Yeah…. I’ve been done with the USGA for awhile now and this just adds to the reasons why.

I am totally down to watch these guys have to work.

There is a difference between having to change your game to “work” and to have a course have their main objective be to embarrass people. I’m NOT down with that. And like I said… do you go to your local muni to watch guys play like crap?

It’s not going to be exciting to watch a guy hit it 220 off the tee, and dink another one up the middle to the green and 2 putt. No thanks, got other stuff to do.

The Open Championship is the only tournament I want to see them suffer but that is weather related not greens running 17 and waist deep rough. The course is fairly setup but conditions are brutal lol
I love the rough being that deep. Easy solution for someone that wants be be the US Open champion - control your ball better than the rest of the field to avoid it.

im also fine with the greens going abnormally hard. But there’s a line. As long as the offer a test of skill, fine. When they get to the point where they basically are not playable by anyone, that’s too much.

I think the problem with how they are setting up the course it makes luck the dominant factor. At some point a line gets crossed and getting a good lie or good bounce starts to be more important than skill.

It’s already been postulated but is the course going to be so tough that the long hitters start to blast away. It’s not like the fairways are generous at any distance. If you are going to be in deep rough either way you might as well be 50 yards closer to the hole.

This. You can talk about controlling your ball all you want but nobody in the world is good enough to consistently hit a 20-yard fairway without leaving 3-wood into every par 4.

I see two ways of playing Oakmont - bomb & gouge or bunt & gouge.

The Grant Horvat/Bryan Bros Major Cut series Oakmont video is kinda hilarious and showing how insanely difficult the course is playing

Ben Griffin said if a genie could grant him +4 total score he would absolutely take it for this week
