Any suggestions for courses to play in the Outer Banks area? I'll be heading down there Friday night for a week and would like to get a round or 2 in. Not looking to spend a fortune, but anything within reason that's not a long drive away would be considered.

jrs,

My family vacations in OBX every June and I always take my clubs along. There's 3 "real" courses on the Outer Banks themselves. I've played 2 of them, but much prefer to drive onto the mainland to play.

On the mainland, I frequent these courses every year:

1. http://www.thepointegolfclub.com - this is a great course to "warm up" on.
2. http://www.thecarolinaclub.com is the sister course to The Pointe, and is also good. (I made my Personal Best score (86) at the Carolina Club last June. We'll see if I beat it this coming june!)
3. My favorite is http://www.kilmarlicgolfclub.com

When I play, I go at "oddball" hours like 1pm on a Tuesday. At this early in the season, you can walk right on and may only see a few other groups on the course. As I'm the only golfer in my family, I usually play by myself and whip through 18 in 3 hours. (Or spend some time at the practice facilities - the practice area at Kilmarlic is very nice.)

Have fun in OBX. Lemme know what courses you decide on! We can swap course reviews. ;-)

like brian, we've vacationed with family in years' past down there.
off the top of my head, i've played:
Goose Creek
Mill Run

these are by no means, immaculate or pristine courses, but it's golf and it's cheap.
again...go online and book your tee times thru golfnow.com or some other discount website. you'll save a ton of money and playing in the middle of the day, even though it's usually scorching hot, is your best bet.

have fun!

I have played the Currituck Club in Corolla just this past Thanksgiving so the weather wasn't ideal but the course was in great shape for the time. We also got a great deal on the tee times because of the time frame.

I think it all depends on where you are staying, how far you want to go and of course price.

I have vacationed in OBX for many years I also played a pretty decent links style course but the name is escaping me. I will see if I can find the name and edit the post.

Good luck

Finally made it back home to VT today. I ended up playing the Pointe on Thursday. I stayed in Salvo and there wasn't much that far south on the OBX so anywhere I went I had about an hr of travel. Got a great deal on Golf Now and played for $24 w/cart with a 12:42 tee time. Ended up grouping up with another single and a pair. I have to say, I was extremely impressed with the course after only being use to the 9-hole public courses in my area.

I played the front 9 well (for me) but fell apart on the back 9. I played holes 1, 10, and 16 to an embarrassing 10-strokes a piece.

I'm going down to OBX next week and am looking at the options you all have provided. I like the look of kilmarlic though just it's high season down there

I have been vacationing in the Outer Banks since I was a little kid, but the only course I have played has been Sea Scape. My parents were owners there and it was really inexpensive to play. It is a good course, but very narrow in parts. If you hit it off the fairway, you ball is gone, or you will get eaten up by bugs if you try to go after it. If you can get something under $60, I'd say go for it, but I personally wouldn't play at the normal rate.

I have also heard it is best to venture off the island to play, unless you have your heart set on playing very close to the water. Nags Head golf links and the Currituck club usually rate the highest on the island.
