Dam shame they had to wait until he died. Glad to see Shoeless Joe as well.

I thought the same. I mean it is not a done deal. But I cant think of any other reason to reinstate someone who has passed.

All Manfred is saying is the ban ends with death. “Obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game”. Baseball should be ashamed.

Is that an actual quote? WTF. Shoeless Joe has been dead for some time now... what was the hold up there then?

Agreed.

What a joke. If you dont want them to represent them while still alive, dont try take credit for them after they are gone. Manfred should be ashamed of that quote.

Not sure why baseball should be ashamed. The manager of a team was placing bets on his team. Everyone knows that is against the rules. He lied about it for years then came clean later on in life. I think Manfred saying now the ban ends at death is interesting but baseball shouldn't have any shame on this.

Because that’s all that’s really happening here in the article. Manfred is lifting the lifetime bans at death now. So, these people would still have to be elected into the Hall. Which is in no way guaranteed.

Because they are in bed with gambling themselves at this point. The second they created an official Sportsbook sponsor the ban should’ve been lifted ( while he was still alive). This is a cowardly, semantics way of doing what should’ve been done long ago.

I hope he gets in. I've always held onto the belief that he really did only bet on his team to win. Every time I watched him play it looked like he was running beyond full speed. As a Braves fan, I hated Pete Rose. But I respected his hustle and tried to mimic that part of his game. It became a point of pride in my childhood to get from first to second before a grounder to the shortstop turned into a force at two.

Ahh... I see what you are saying now.

Which actually makes worse in my mind. When Rose was making bets it wasn't even legal. Even with all the sports leagues partnering up with gambling sites if you are an athlete, coach, whatever for the team you can't bet on your sport.

f**k off Manfred, the man’s in the ground and won’t get to see it out of his spite.

Guy is a clown

Wonder if Pope Leo called the commish to get members of his White Sox off the list. Too bad Pete Rose never got to see this

Agree with @echico on this one. Whether it's legal or not now is irrelevant, it was illegal then (and as echico pointed out still would be) and he knowingly chose to break the rule.

I think the ban should have been lifted long ago though personally, so glad it's happening at least.

I'm not shocked by this. Allowing Shoeless Joe before Rose passed would have opened up other arguments for Rose. It makes sense they waited, even if some see it as in bad taste.

I grew up a Reds fan. Still am. Love them. I was surrounded by them. My older brother wanted to name me Griffey. Rose didn't deserve the Hall of Fame.

He bet on his team. He had a chance to make a deal that would have gotten him in the Hall at some point and wouldn't take it. The he said he didn't bet on baseball. He lied. Then he said he bet on them to win every night. He lied. Every chance he had to come clean, he deflected, lied, or tried to take the spotlight away from those who were just elected to the hall. And he came clean in a book. To make money off the situation again.

He was to blame for his situation every step of the way.

His accomplishments were already in Cooperstown and at the Reds Hall of Fame. He was on the All-Century Team. He was acknowledged as one of the greats by his peers and MLB. He was a fantastic baseball player. And he was also a horrible person with bad character. And he served his lifetime ban.

While I agree that what Pete did was against the rules, absolutely none of it had anything to do with what he accomplished on the field as a player.

The last time I checked, the hall of fame rewarded players for their accomplishments during their playing careers.

I bet that his marker in the hall will be one of the more popular, sadly he isn't around to see it.

He was player-manager when he was betting on the Reds. He broke Ty Cobb's record while managing the team and could have had money on that game. He controlled the lineups of a team he had money on or possibly against. John Dowd, who wrote the Dowd Report, stated he believes Rose probably bet against the Reds.

This isn't because MLB didn't like the guy. Sports HAS to be above board. It's not something you mess with.

And his bust will be one of the most visited. That's why its so infuriating that HE did this stuff to himself. He would have been in the Hall long ago as possibly the 1st unanimous player if he wasn't a arrogant liar.

I was always a huge Rose fan growing up. Glad to see this happening, no matter the circumstances

Anyone want to put odds on the writers actually putting him in the hall? Apparently they can be knobs sometimes…..

The writers won't vote on Rose or Jackson. It is a committee.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there have been what, 4 Commissioners of MLB (including Manfred?) I would say thank him for finally opening the door for consideration - we may not like his choice of words, .but at least it's an option now. Let's face it, he was NEVER getting in while alive - no matter who the boss was
