@JB 's thread and my recent travel got me wondering:

What are your personal rules for flying?

Do you think reclining the seat is okay, or you do you think it's an unwritten rule not to do it? Certain foods? Shoes off? etc...

My flight back yesterday, only a 3ish hour flight, I had the Alpha Karen sitting in front of me. She reclined as far back as it went and then would ram herself backwards. I had tried to have my laptop open, but every time she rammed herself backwards it would cause the seat to hit it. Then for half of the flight she leaned forward, not even taking advantage of the reclined seat. What a power move, lol. She also took her shoes off and directed everyone around her to close the vents as she was cold. And of course she promptly stood up into the aisle as soon as she could once the plane landed.

Some people are just a**holes. The woman you described is one of them.

I chalk a lot of this stuff up to a total lack of self awareness and an unwillingness to accept that ones actions affect others.

We are in the 'it's all about ME ME ME ' phase of history. I see it every time I drive more than 4-5 miles, I see it in the grocery store, I see it in restaurants, heck just walking down the street with my wife on some shopping excursions in the city. No one seems to care how their behavior affects others.

In our family, we keep our shoes on, and we don't recline - and for what it's worth, we upgrade when possible and not cost prohibitive to avoid many of these things.

I will say I do try to get up relatively quickly depending on where I seated, but that is more often due to needing to stretch, I try on flights of 3 hours or less to just stay seated - so when we hit the ground I need get up!

I don't recline my seat or bring food onto the plane typically unless it's like a coke. Also if i'm watching something i make sure it doesn't have excess gore or nudity or something in case there's kids on the plane.

I find it a bit awkward when you're watching true detective and there's like a 10 minute s*x scene.....you're like "cmon i'm on a plane here, i just want to watch detective stuff"

I generally don't talk much unless people talk to me

I would have laughed in her face and told her to get a blanket. She can put on more clothes but if I take my clothes off it would be frowned upon…thanks Osama.

Shoes on. Always.

It’s the I paid for this so I can do whatever I want mentality. The life is all about me person.

It's so true though. We have tried really hard to teach our kids to be really mindful and respectful, but that has come at the price of them seemingly getting walked over by selfish people. So now we are trying to teach them a happy medium of being respectful, but also not letting jerks do things like jump in front of them.

I don't hesitate to call people out about that stuff. I find more often than not people are just in their own world and when I speak up they snap out of it and realize..oh wait, yeah I'm wrong. Usually anyway.

This trip to AZ we did a lot of hiking in areas with strict leash laws. The amount of people that just did not care and thought it didn't apply to them was wild. I love dogs, but I don't love an unleashed dog I don't know. Heck one place we kept hearing coyotes then this wild looking dog comes around the corner and we stop and wonder if that's someone's dog or if it's wild. Turns out just another person not leashing their dog. I yelled at them to leash the dog, she said "thanks" in a snarky tone then promptly unleashed the dog again 20 feet past us. The absolute nerve.

I just put my headphones on and either listen to a podcast or watch a movie.

Just be respectful of the people around you.

Honestly, just be aware of your surroundings. This simple thing would fix so much about traveling if more people did it.

My most recent flight the guy in front of me did recline and it was a bit irritating as he was a seat slammer as well. I don’t generally mind but it would be nice if the dude had said is this cool? I’m never gonna say no if someone needs that to be comfortable. I did bring a bag of BBQ chips on my 2nd flight, but before opening asked the woman sitting with me if she minded if I opened them.

It comes down to courtesy. I tell my kids everyday it costs you nothing to be kind and you don’t know what a person is going through. Just ask before doing something and don’t be a ****.

No-no’s

Chicken wings
Exposed feet
Reading light before 8am or after 9pm
Standing the second we land

lol couldn’t agree more and yet it’s incredible how many people act like they’re the only ones there. It starts way before the air plane too.

It's almost more infuriating just trying to walk to your gate! People just walking aimlessly, stopping directly in front of you, cutting you off. It's like everyone woke up and forgot how to navigate in a crowded area.

It’s just comes down to being a decent human. Like holding doors for someone that’s coming in behind you. My boys all do this my oldest will hold it for what feels like a million people coming our HS during concert seasons. Be decent and everything else works out usually.

It's all about me and damn everyone else attitude. If I could get away with punching people that deserved it I would.

If I want to take my shoes off on a long haul flight, I always make sure I have socks. Domestic, the shoes stay on, it's only 4 hours or so.

Seat recline I can just knee them in the back until they say something...but I'm a arsehole.

I hate these threads because one person makes it seem like everyone sucks when honestly most people are great. There is always one though. Last night we were at the mall and some lady started yelling at some guy for saying she was being rude. She yelled for like 5 minutes as we were walking away. You could tell everyone was trying to leave the area because it made them so uncomfortable. Lady, it’s Christmas, we’re all trying to spend time with our families and get gifts knocked out. Just move on. This ain’t the way to handle this.

2 rules, ok… maybe 3

Be of assistance if someone needs help.

Head on a swivel and be ready…. Just in case

Barring any type of involvement due to #1 or # 2 - Mind my own effing business and get to my destination relatively unnoticed.

I think it's just our nature to notice the outlier. For the most part everyone acts fine and you cruise through the day not really taking notice.

It's why online reviews are tough as typically it's only people that had a really great, or more often, really bad experience that take the time to offer a review.

I’m not sure how often you fly or visit airports, but it ain’t one person…The ratio drastically changes.

You have to care about your surroundings before being aware of them

1. Sit down and shut up
2. Every airline has the select-o-matic when it comes to seat selection, so you who chose to sit in Row 15 can wait for Rows 1-14 to get their carry-ons and leave
3. I'm not your buddy, pal - refer to #1

You aren’t at home, don’t recline, leave your damn shoes on and don’t bring any food that stinks on a plane.

Don’t stand up and get in the aisle and if you are in the back of the plane, wait your damn turn, you aren’t more important than anyone else on the plane. If you were you would be in first class.

On the general topic of flying: I've only flow twice this year, and it's been the first time I'm flown in several years.

I was really surprised at the difference between airlines. First was Delta. They had the seat back screens, gave actual snacks - it was pretty nice. This time was AA, no screens, no snack options. It felt much more stripped down like a budget airline.

that’s plane to plane. American has plenty of flights with screens and everything else.
