These are the top ten payouts for the WGC FedEx last weekend. How does it work when Berger, Koepka, Lewis and Mickelson all shot 10 under? And 6 guys shot 9 under so 10 players tied for 2nd and 3rd place.

ETA: Nevermind, just clicked the second page of the payout list and it shows each player gets the amount for that place. Man there's a lot of money in the golf world.

  • 1. $1,820,000
  • 2. $1,150,000
  • 3. $685,000
  • 4. $515,000
  • 5. $430,000
  • 6. $360,000
  • 7. $315,000
  • 8. $275,000
  • 9. $245,000
  • 10. $220,000

If 4 players tied for second place, they add up 2nd through 5th place money and divide by 4. Each of those players got $695,000.

The 6 guys at -9 each receive $270,000

I agree. It's crazy to think you can make over one million dollars for winning a golf tournament. I know this is a golf topic, but I can't help bringing up Gerrit Cole's contract (I know, these numbers were before the season was cut short). $9,200 PER PITCH. That's incredible.

The $1M per start is astounding... It is also interesting to see the bottom and even middle of the pack in small tourneys... Tough living especially with expenses.

Unless you're at the top of the food chain and/or have big sponsorship details, I've heard it said that the best way for a pro golfer to get to a million dollars is to start with two million.

When you factor in travel and lodging plus paying the network

Paying the network?
I imagine a lot of coaches, multiple facilities home clubs, practice rounds, trainer, chef, maybe even family,friends..etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't some players also have to pay tournament entry fees? I've heard if you can't consistently make cuts, you have a small chance of making a good living playing golf, due to all the reasons you have mentioned.

IIRC, they have to pay entry fees for the pre-tournament weekday qualifiers (with certain exceptions), but no entry fees for the tournaments themselves.

Guys who don't consistently make cuts go hungry unless they have a strong financial support system behind them. As sports go, golf is pretty much the ultimate meritocracy - you have to perform (and do it consistently) to make your money. No multi-year, multi-million prima donna contracts to see you through your ups and downs.
