The Red Wine Thread

Been kind of in the mood for a good wine lately. Sounds delicious what’s the verdict?

I liked it. It’s light and fruity. I wouldn’t call it sweet by any means, but it’s not heavy like some reds can be

Had a very good wine last night called Dancing Crow. I got it a few days ago when I went to the store and they were out of Josh, and the guy suggested this wine. A few bucks more than Josh, but still under $20.

My wife loves the big, bold oakey Cabs. Unfortunately, we can't afford to pop open a $200+ bottle of Del Dotto every night...

Surprisingly, we found a Cab that she absolutely loved at Trader Joe's - it is labeled under their own brand and we bought it for $12.99 in Westfield, NJ this week.

Usually the first 4 are reasonably low priced, and the last is the "WOW of the week", more expensive & the kind I guess you're supposed to let age for a few years (I'm a wine newby).

Last week, the WOW wine was this:

2015 CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja
Again, I'm no expert, but I thought this was fantastic. Price was listed at $48, but I saw a site where it's listed for $34

This is the actual label (had some trouble uploading the files)

I picked this up the other night at Lucky's Market. I liked it very well.

another bottle of 2016 trefethen merlot from the oak knoll district in california. for $25 it’s one of the better california bordeaux based wines we’ve had in quite sometime.

I’m gonna have to bring a gallon jug of Carlo Rossi for you.

Box of Bota Cabernet is good for me with the occasional Total Wine recommendation in the 20-25 range when feeling fancy.

This is a wine that I had at a bar at the Cosmo in Vegas a few weeks ago. I liked it so much I picked up 6 bottles at Total Wine.DAOU.jpeg

Yesterday at my weekly wine tasting, we had 5 different 90+ point rated Syrahs. The highlight was this:
2015 K Vintners The Hidden Syrah:
K Syrah 2015.JPG
This is the first 100 point wine they've had (the owner said he asked for the 2016 but this got delivered instead). I will say that it was ...amazing. Probably too good for a newb like me.

Actually, I thought all 5 were really good. I think I like Syrahs lol! Or at least these 5. The next favorite was actually the cheapest:

2017 Michael David 6th Sense:

For $14 it was really nice.

I'm debating getting a bottle of the K & storing it for my retirement (or my wife's retirement) or for when my youngest moves out - but I might not be alive to see that last one.

k vintners and charles smith wines are some decadent and delicious syrahs and rhône blends from washington. they cover a lot of different price points. syrah, grenache and mourvèdre as well as blends thereof are my favorite wines!

i have a $15 uco valley cab franc on deck for tonight. will report back if it’s any good.

Drinking this now while watching the Browns. I'm not sure what wine pairs well with frustration & bitter disappointment.

Bala Perdida 2.JPGBala Perdida 1.JPG

I like this one too. Here are the tasting notes froma few weeks back:

“Bala Perdida”, or “Lost Bullet” was named after the last film that actor David Carradine appeared in as a cowboy. The grapes are most well known as Alicante Bouschet, but grown in Alicante as Garnacha Tintorera. Located on the east coast right on the Mediterranean, these wines develop big ripe fruit notes with a balance of acidity. Notes of juicy red fruits, cinnamon and spice, along with some creamy vanilla from the barrels. 100% Alicante Bouschet. 4 months in American and Hungarian oak. 13.5% alcohol.

I don't know about all that. I just know that it's a great tasting wine for $13

Saw this at the store for $19 and decided to follow your recommendation. I’m happy I did - quite good!

Super Substance Stoneridge Merlot 2014 Merlot 2.JPGSuper Substance Stoneridge Merlot 2014 Merlot 1.JPG
Another weekly wine tasting: This was the WOW of the week: Super Substance Stoneridge Merlot 2014

Really, really solid merlot.

But for the money:
Dante merlot ($10 !!)
Dante-Merlot-Michael-Pozzan.jpg

Another weekly tasting: this time it was 5 different Zinfandels, all rated 90+ (if that means anything to you).

The first one was (IMHO) the value of the week at $10:
2017 Shannon Ridge High Elevation Zinfandel
Shannon Ridge 2017 Zin.JPG
Tasting notes provided by the store:
92 Points, Editor’s Choice, Wine Enthusiast. Extraordinarily deep and resonant in a black fruit flavor, this is a full-bodied wine that has great focus and a moderate layer of tannins to offer grip. Black berry, plum and cherry flavors all contribute to the palate and keep reverberating on the finish. 100% Zinfandel. 15.8% alcohol.

My notes: "It was...nice!"(y)

The second one that stood out to me was:
2017 Four Vines Biker Zinfandel $19.99
2017 The Biker Zin.JPG
90 Points Wine.com. Black cherry and spicy aromas lead to an elegant palate of wild blackberry and plum flavors bolstered by a touch of black pepper and sweet, toasted oak. The 2017 offers a plush mouthfeel and a long, velvety finish. 88% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Syrah. 12 months in French, American and Hungarian oak, 25% new. 15% alcohol.

The interesting thing to me was the first time around, I had this ranked last of the 5. The guy that does the tastings said this was one of his favorites. So I decided to do another pour of the Shannon Ridge vs the Biker. Mainly because - hey, it's 50 cents a pour, and also because I think I have wine Alzheimers. I can't recall what they taste like after a few minutes.

So doing an A-B test, going back & forth, my thoughts changed. I think I might prefer the Biker a little more. I hope this means I'm not easily persuaded lol! But I would swear that the second time around, it was a different taste.

The best of the 5 was the most expensive:
2015 Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel $39.99

Seghesio Zin.JPG

94 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Medium to deep garnet-purple, the 2015 Zinfandel Old Vine offers a beguiling nose of crushed blueberries, Black Forest cake and crème de cassis with hints of dried roses, licorice, incense and tilled soil. Full-bodied, rich and with wonderful purity, it has an amazing frame of ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. 92% Zinfandel, 7% Petite Sirah, 1% Alicante Bouschet. 15 months in 20% new French oak. 15.4% alcohol.

My notes: "Hey! Super nice!"(y)(y) I can't really tell if this had any of those tastes (hell, I have no idea what crème de cassis even is, and I'm pretty sure I've never tasted dried roses either.) But it was really tasty!

Anyway, I had fun.

Beringer Pinot.JPG
(y)(y)(y) For only $8, this is a pretty good pinot*! The manager of my local store just got it in yesterday & was sampling it. He said that Wine Enthusiast named it their best value of the year.

*I haven't had a ton of different pinot noirs. I do like the taste of this one though.

I'm interested to see what my pinot-preferring wine-snob BIL thinks of this one. Guess we'll find out at Thanksgiving.

seghesio is good, but for me never as good as the price commands because it’s on the high side for zin.

four vines biker was one our favorites back in the day.

these days turley, martinelli and robert biale are my favorite zins

I’m a huge Turley fan. I’ve never had their cab and got an allocation last week but it was sold out by the time I clicked to buy. I’m still sitting on a mixed case of their zins, so I’m happy for now. Will reload this spring.

This is very nice. Long profile. Medium plus tannins. Rich, dark berries. A little slate and minerality. Kind of old world meets new world wine.
