No. think the honor of playing for your country is compensation enough.

Agreed. If they play well enough to make it on the Ryder Cup team then they are having a pretty decent year or two. Sometimes things are just better when they are for honor and bragging rights vs. getting paid. I think this is one of those.

If the tour(s) is/are acceding to the wishes of a loud minority then, that will likely be the end of the event as we know it, and we are closing in on exactly that given the cost of tickets for the next one.

It's really simple, don't want to play for honor, then respectfully decline the invite, while your popularity will likely wane, I would respect the honesty.

Doesn’t bother me.

I look at it this way, if an organization is going to squeeze out every single cent out of us for tickets and corporations to advertise, I think they can play 10 million to the players. They require volunteers to pay $350 to volunteer.

The end of golf and a great tradition. Its starting to resemble other professional or even college sports, all about the money.
require volunteers to pay $350 to volunteer.

.Yep, that's something, be a volunteer and pay up. Interesting.

Can’t disagree with this, at least entirely. But the cost to put these events on must be pretty high.

I know some events that charge volunteers, give them a lot in return, the clothes they wear at the event and passes for the week, other perks — not saying Ryder does this, presidents used to.

I’d like to see where the money that is collected, rights fees, gate, souvenirs, food etc, how it breaks down and where it goes.

If a profit is being made, vice donated or invested, then that profit can be shared, beyond that, no.

Doesn't really bother me at all...easy to sit here and say I'd do it for nothing, but money does talk

I'd argue most of the guys competing at the Ryder Cup aren't really going to react to 400k based on their success that got them to that invite.

But, whatever. It makes money, and I see no reason why they wouldn't as well.

Doesn’t bother me one bit.

This is where I'm at. I don't care if they get paid. The PGA of America makes a lot of money off the event.

I posted in the ticket price thread that the PGA of America said the Ryder Cup is the only money making event they run and it funds the organization for 4 years.

I can agree with you. Clearly the PGA of America can easily afford 400k for each of the players given the amount of money the event is generating.

They should only get paid if they win and stop being embarrassed when they play in Europe.

So we are talking $400k? For the players who basically earned their way in and assumably pocketed $10 Million (in order to qualify), and the few Captain's picks are likely also pulling in $7+ Million over the same time frame. On a regular tour event, I assume the players pay for all their own expenses. At the Ryder they are comped everything (again an assumption). So, $400K, minus taxes is now around $200k? And from that they pay their caddies (since they are being paid now), now it's maybe $150k? for the players who earned their way in?

Honestly - if that's even close to reality - then like every other pro sport, greed ruins it. To me, and I find myself to be (at least I thought, for an old guy), pretty forward thinking.

Now, if the PGA does make that much, as noted earlier, the first thing I'd do is not make the volunteers pay.

I would agree with this if the organizations that run the event weren’t making a ton of money off it. Since they are I don’t see why the players shouldn’t be paid. Rumor is that daily tickets for the next RC will be $750. It the PGA is extorting that much money for the event it seems the players should get paid.

I will be a Contrarian here. How much money is made for both sides during the event?? A massive amount that is how much.
So the Pros should just be happy to represent their country while everyone else is profiting off it?
Ryder Cup tickets are UNGODLY expensive. Where is all that money going? 400k per player is chump change in the grand scheme of things.

just another example pro golf imploding. These a-holes just cant stop.

Doesn't bother me. 400k is a drop in the bucket. But man, it just continues to show that golf is becoming all about the money.

You are right, it's chump change, and it makes me wonder why they chose that number and why the players see that as reasonable.

Huge gate, limited field, 400k is an odd number, should be something like $2M for winners, and maybe $500k for losers.

This is one reason I keep posting in this thread!

I mean $400K to these guys may as well be 40 Bucks and six pack.

Then put it on commercial free instead of squeezing every last dollar out of someone elses names, image and likeness.

In my opinion, I don’t think they should get paid for it. That being said, it doesn’t bother me and I’m not going to stop watching it or being excited about it.

If I was on the team I couldn't care less about any of that. Just being on the team would be a singular honor, and representing my country even more so. Have we gone so far down the rabbit hole that the best players in the world, who aren't exactly starving, can't give up a few days of their time representing their country without being compensated?

I would also add don't charge people a goddam Kidney for a ticket!

If everyone else wasn't getting rich off the Players backs I would think they were being greedy but in reality they are they show and they were doing it for "Love of country" while everyone is making $$$$
