Based on the context of the post saying the rule says using a detached piece of gear to touch the base and avoid a tag I’d say he’s out. It looks like he intentionally took it off with the intent of using maintain contact with the base.

So if the mitt touches the base before the tag when the hand inside might not, is that guy safe or out? As far as I know that’s never been tested/appealed, so I have no idea what the ruling would be.
