Scotty Cameron putters

Apparently Tiger Woods has been testing a few heavier putters. Including the usual suspect with lead tape in the cavity.

I think he should go back to his original Scotty. I didn't watch his round, but he has a ton of room to make up, shooting +7. But hey, it could be worse... at least he didn't shoot a 14 on one hole for a 91 final like David Duval.

I've been contemplating pulling the trigger on a Scotty for years now, and picked up a couple of 1025 Carbon Odyssey Protype 2 putters. Currently am bidding on a Studio Style Newport, which I hope to win. I'm really dying to try out a GSS insert.

I just picked up a Cameron Detour off of the bay. Its kind of weird putter but its a Cameron and it was a deal, so here we are. Im excited for it to get here. Ive owned a couple Camerons in my day (Red X back in the mid 2000s and a Cameron American Classic Bullseye) and theyre always such well-crafted flatsticks.

I’ve got Futura fever again! Several years ago I gamed a Futura X7M and made a ridiculous amount of putts. I recently went back to the Futura 7M. It was like meeting up with an old friend I hadn’t seen in years; we picked like we’d never been apart. I’ve added a 5.5M and Jet Setter 5M H17 to my Futura stable. I am drawn to the Phantom X12 however the dots just don’t work as well for me as a simple line does.

Do the button back conversion and get rid of the weird part.

Great thread! All good comments! I was fitted to a Laguna 2 several years ago and still use it. I've tried several different brands and types, but always have gone back to that one. My advise....get fitted. Mine is 34" with a MINIMAL forward press bend. I added a Super Stroke grip to help keep my hands quiet. Having a little extra weight at the toe keeps me from flaring it. I've got 20s at the toe and heel, so it's a little heavier (personal preference). Good luck and have fun with this process! It's interesting that SC is coming back out with the old Teryllium T22. QUESTION FOR THE BOARD....Golf ball texture aside, what is the "softest" putter any of you use?

Based on its specs (35.25" length, 52 gram Pingman grip, D2 swing weight) Tiger's long time Cameron putter head likely weighs about 326 grams, maybe a little less.
If Tiger is interested in trying heavier putters my best guess is that they would be no more than 10 grams heavier , as that is a significant change.
Fowler uses a head originally milled for Tiger, so I guess his putter head is in the 320 to 330 range as well. The Scotty Cameron Faxon played had a head weight of 310. When Cleveland hired Crenshaw to help design and promote a Classic line of putters, the stock retail versions were 340 gram heads, but the version Crenshaw had in his bag was 310 grams.

I just browsed this (July 16, 2019, Royal Portrush):

From a Golfweek Article of the same day.

I also see you've dug a little deeper and changed some #'s from this post you made DG_1234.

It is hard to tell from afar what is really is up with Tiger and the Elder Wand. This 2016 GolfDigest Article doesn't help either. I never recall hearing that the swingweight was D7. I recall two times Scotty Cameron talking about it and being D2. So who knows?

Cameron also said he adjusted the putter in a parking lot once. So, it is interesting but not going to change my world.

Yes, Scotty has stated Tiger's putter swing weight is D2. So, at 35.25" with Pingman 52 gram grip and the putter head at about 322 grams, D2 swing weight is likely. Whether the head is 318 grams or 326 grams or somewhere in the middle I don't know for certain.
On rare occasions when a Tour event is played on relatively slow greens, such as a British Open, Tiger has sometimes added lead tape to the sole and, or, cavity of the putter. One 2 inch long by .5" wide strip of lead tape adds a gram of head weight, so if Tiger wanted to add 5 grams he would apply 5 strips of tape. My guess is that when he did add tape, especially at the sole area, it was no more than a couple of strips.
But the sole is 4" long, so a couple of strips would increase head weight by about 4 grams.
Tiger putted great in his prime, so did Nicklaus, Watson, and many more players. But the 305 to 330 gram putter head weight (which so many sensational Tour players used to make putts ) has not been offered by major putter brands for about 10 years now. So current high school collegiate, and young 20 something Tour pros likely have never even tried a more traditional weight putter head.

I'll never understand why so many people in this era (amateur and pro alike) think a super heavy putter is some how better.

Obviously pros know more than me, but you pick up just about any Stainless Anser and putt with it and it just feels right.

Remember, the length of the putter is relevant as well. For example, Scotty Cameron's long time conviction was that 35"/330 grams, 34"/340 grams, and 33"/350 grams were sensible length-to-weight ratios which resulted in a well balanced putter .

Yes.

But I think even that is a little retentive, IMO.

But I am not a short game specialist, so what do I know.

But I am not a short game specialist, so what do I know.

Some of the so called "short game specialists" out there are really just self promoters looking to make a buck. About 10 years Ralph Maltby's ridiculous assertion that most players should be using 32" putters got some internet forum traction and a bunch of people started chopping inches off their putter shafts. Maltby made a lot of money for himself selling club components, which is great, but I doubt the man ever broke 90. Geoff Mangum was another so called "putter fitting expert" suggesting the overwhelming majority of players were using putters much too long and too light headed. Whether Mangum even plays golf or not I don't know, but he was able to sell goods and services off his web site, and there are plenty of naive consumers.
The reality is that anyone who wants to fit themselves for a putter may do so buy purchasing a wide range of putter lengths and head weights from ebay sellers. For example, play a round or two with a 33" putter, a 36" putter, a 34" putter etc...And buy/try different putter head weights as well, all the way from about 290 gram heads to 370 gram heads are available from ebay sellers. After some trial and error trying different lengths and weights the player will know which length-weight combination is best for him/her.

Why would you promote playing with different length putters if all you need is about 5-10 minutes to find the length you need based off how you set up to the ball naturally? You fit the club to the person, not the person to the club.

"Set up naturally" may or may not yield good putting results.
It is best if a player try a range of putter lengths (and putter head weights), and from that he/she will learn which combination produces the consistently best results.
For putting I've read a lot of nonsense rhetoric such as "putting is personal" or "do what's comfortable". But the reality is that successful putting, like all golf shots, is about learning and practicing an effective technique which the player is able to consistently repeat.
Fit shop owners and employees like to say "we fit the club to the player" (not the player to the club). And while that sounds good in theory, the reality is that if the player's technique is bad then fitting a club to same is counter productive.

The best success I ever had was with this old Slot line Bullseye that was (iir) like 36.5" long and I choked up on it. I made so many putts with that junky thing.

Since...I have long felt like the pendulum on a long (choked up on), light headed putter can really feel like it was meant to be in your hands.

I want to mess with a Scotty fastback so bad right now. Kind of digging the shape and it's a step away from what I've been playing.

I am. Very well. But I don't believe that things are perfect, ever.

If it improves by 1-3 putts a round, that's a world of difference.

Makes sense—out of curiosity how many putts per round do you average?

The pro I played in our Pro Am a few weeks ago was rolling a Scotty Squareback Straight Shaft that he got from the Cameron studio around 2009 and I fell in love with that thing. If that was a public release I probably would have been scouring the Earth for one.

I haven't really been keeping track this year, honestly. What I find with my putting, especially at home, is that I am SO close every round to a monster score (in a good way).

@OITW and @jdtox were the latest to see it. My 68 could have EASILY been a 64 or 65 were it not for lipped putts and 'almosts'

Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades super chief!

Seriously though that 68 could have easily been a 64. Many many putts that could have went in for you the entire weekend
