Sports Commissioners - Why would anyone do the job?

Sports Commissioners seems to be the most hated men in the sport. Is there anything they can do to actually have a favorable public opinion? I don't know much about NBA so can't tell you anything about Adam Silver but I know that David Stern was not liked.

Monahan - LIV/PGAT stuff
Manfred - "Piece of Metal"
Goodell - Rules with an iron fist
Bettman - So many bad things
Selig - How he is in HOF while he ignored steroids but the steroids players are not in HOF is criminal
 
Why would someone do it? Maybe one reason is...

Money and prestige. Also if they play golf I bet they have all played at Augusta and Pine Valley. I know Goodell is a member at both places. Public opinion is a crap shoot no matter how well or poorly you do your job. That would never sway me in picking a job.
