Check-up with doctor today and he writes me a prescription for blood pressure medicine.

I’m ******* pissed.

Made it to 55 never needing any medication. I’m not overweight, relatively healthy. I haven’t worked out in a while, just too ******* busy. Work a total ******* **** show. So yeah, it’s my fault.

The thought of having to take maintenance medicine is the last thing I wanted to hear today.

Any of you guys on this ****, what can you tell me? I don’t even know what it’s called, still sitting at the pharmacy.

I'm on a low dose of Licinopril or whatever it's called. I have had no side effects or any difference at all other than my numbers being better. I was on an ADDITIONAL medication for blood pressure, but in the last year I have lost over 50 pounds and was taken off of it, and just on the licinopril

Did you ask your provider if he thought it was a hereditary issue or if an increase in physical activity/change in diet could help with prevention? Speaking from a healthcare standpoint, unless your provider is very pro-pharma, which some are and some aren't, they typically will offer some advice on alternative action and a re-check after so many months. If it was very high, the response to medication right away makes sense.

I definitely get being busy, but even trying to find 10 minutes a couple days a week to even just walk and get some steps in can help with prevention and getting you back into a normal range.

I take Losartin Pottasium. No side effects except normal blood pressure again. No biggie. It's extremely common to start in middle age due to stress. At Humana about 50% of folks on Medicare Advantage took blood pressure medication of some sort.

AI says this:

I have hypertension, I believe it is heredity, I take 3 medications for it, blood pressure meds, a water pill and potassium.

Firstly take meds its protective and you don't want long term high pressure it does a tremendous amount of damage to your heart muscle and you want to keep that muscle strong so you don't have a heart attack.

It sounds like yours is mainly lifestyle induced. If you can find 30 minutes a day to do moderately intense exercise you may be able to get off of it in by your next check up but its better to have it controlled now to prevent heart attacks and strokes in the future

I take 20mg lisinopril and have since I was 21 probably. Maybe younger. It’s hereditary for me. I’m in solid shape, not overweight and active with a healthy diet. Nothing I do would get my BP into a reasonable range.

I’ve been on Lisinopril since I was like 18. Just something hereditary I think. No side effects that I’ve noticed other than feeling better and less pressure headaches

Pretty simple. Diet. Exercise. Meds. These three item will make your life much easier.

Ive been living with HBP the last 5 years. I hold steady at 128/75. I'm also over weight by about 30-40 lbs. My bad.

If the person doesnt control it, it will damage other organs in the body. The failing of those organs will do the person in.

I also like to eat oatmeal.

first two I took gave me migraines. The one I take now caused potassium drop so then I had to take that. Then I started getting headaches again. So basically I went from zero pills to 14 for high blood pressure.

My wife is the only reason I continue to take them. When i go to say...the dentist, they routinely take it using the stupid little wrist cuff. Then they deny treatment and say they have to tell me to seek emergency treatment. I say try the other arm. They do and suddenly I can be treated.

I go to the doctor. They take it two, three, four times and get different readings. they take the one they want.

I got a specialized watch that allegedly takes it through the skin. My numbers were great by that method.

I don't take it serious. My wife, a nurse, does. I love her so take the pills but if not for her, at risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, I would take the fact that they often take it until they get the number they want and throw out the rest and take zero pills for it. I dislike them, dislike the headaches I associate with them. But I do want to make my wife happy. So...

I'm the opposite.

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure when I was 18 and took medication for 28 years. I stopped smoking and started losing some weight and my doctor took me off the meds in 2017 because I'm controlling it "naturally". I still take my BP every 2 days about 30 minutes after I get up and keep a log of it just to keep an eye on it.

It's not the end of the world but I understand how you feel about it. But better to be able to control it than the alternative.

Well ****. I guess it’s all caught up to me then. He’s told me and I know that I could do things better. Dunno, I reckon a punch in the face helps sometimes.

I'm on losartan low dose. Mine is from stress due to work.

I have the opposite problem, I have low blood pressure. After my heart attack they gave me medication for high blood pressure and it dropped to 75/55. The assumption was anyone who has a heart attack must have high blood pressure.

I have been chasing my blood pressure for a couple of years. I am on relatively low doses of 3 different medications right now. I don’t love having to take the medication but it has gotten it under control. I don’t seem to have any side effects from the medication.

In a perfect world I would lose 20 or so pounds and eat better. Injuries have torpedoed my workout routine this year and I can’t seem to get my diet completely in line.

Blood pressure is the only real health issue I have the rest of my blood work is excellent.

HBP sucks... i've had it for quite a while (since my 40's) and for a while it was just about out of control.... it's much more under control now but i'm on like 4 different meds to achieve that. Yeah, you read that right.... Four.

I suggest that you:

Take your meds.... RELIGIOUSLY. (True story: Had an aunt who, back in the 70's, would pick up their prescription, and just toss it in the drawer, never took it. Stroked out and was in a wheelchair and unable to speak for over a decade. Don't f**k around with it.)

Eat properly
If you drink alcohol, consider not doing that or cutting way back.
Lose weight.... as much as you can.... every bit of weight loss helps, even if you don't consider yourself grossly overweight.
work on alleviating stress and anxiety (easier said than done but worth a shot)

Good luck.

It’s a very common problem. Most of it goes undiagnosed. I would imagine 75% of society falls into the parameters for hypertension. Couple of things play into it. Stress lack of sleep dietary changes in increasing sodium is a big deal. Sodium is very well hidden frozen food foods anything preserved almost always has salt in it.

Caffeine. Caffeine is nature’s best diuretic by definition and squeezes down all your vessels, making them tighter raises your blood pressure, pushing all that blood and flow through your kidneys. That way you can remove the fluid. It might make us feel good and it might keep us awake, but it certainly has side effects.

Hidden blood sugar issues are a major problem an elevated hemoglobin A1c would tell you that you may have blood sugar issues

I understand it’s not the end of the world, but it is really aggravating. The problem is noncompliance can be deadly. I would suggest some lifestyle changes maybe some forced exercise lifting weights cardio eliminate one or two bad things from your diet. Reduce some caffeine.

A major suggestion for anyone on blood pressure medication’s check it when you first get up in the mornings check it of the night before you go to bed. These should probably be too entirely different readings and it may help them regulate your blood pressure or key in on what the cause is a little quicker.

You can DM me if you need to if there’s anything I can answer or any questions you got that I could possibly breakdown to Lehman‘s terms and non-medical terms just let me know always here to help

I take furosimide for edema. It lowers the BP as well.
If I am in pain my BP goes up. When my back is killing me and I pop a Norco, the BP goes down as the pain subsides.
If I eat too much of anything the BP goes up. If I am hungry the BP goes down..
I test higher at the Dr than at home. At home I am usually 120/80. At the dtr it can be 140/98. I think its because that buxum Ukranian girl puts my arm under hers and mashes it with her more than ample bosom. I may be 66 but I'm not dead yet....

Caffeine- A cup when I get up and watch the news, a cup when I get to the office, Diet Coke for lunch. Weekend usually a Celsius mid afternoon.

Nicotine- Zen

Alcohol- Generally 2 glasses of wine, one while cooking dinner and one while eating it. Weekends maybe more.

Work- Stressed like hell, 5 years to go.

Exercise- Very lacking.

Diet- We actually eat pretty well. One pizza a week, whether on the grill or take out. Eat out maybe 2 twice a month.

I know those 4 are a big problem. I suppose an excuse for walking 9 holes twice a week would be a good start.

Keep it coming.

I am a freak of nature - at 65 even when I was very heavy did not have HBP. Now, it's occasionally elevated but nothing that any MD worries about. And resting heart rate (yea, not the same) is really low sometimes hi 40s!

I can say, from a good friend of mine, that some people are just predisposed to things like this - other than that, reduce salt, eat right, and exercise - none of which (usually) need to be done like a a crazy person - just moderation - start with walking or bike riding, cut back on salty foods, eat more fruits/vegetables. Again not box of salad every night - just maybe a bit more than subtle change?

Good luck - and try to destress - if work is stressing you, and you do your best each day, leave it at that point - whatever 'it' is that day, it will be there to be addressed the next day - it does not ALL fall on you - subtle change in how you look at some things maybe that can help?

Exercise is important, not just for your physical well being, but your mental well being too. The young guys at work are convinced I made a deal at the crossroads because I refuse to age and can outwork half of them. Last year they got me a book they said was my biography...
Keep moving, if you stop long enough they throw dirt on you....

I have the same thing. I tested mine earlier it was 120/76. Go to the DR it's 148/92. 🤬

Also ever thought about yoga It's good for exercise to control BP, but also the breathing and stress relief aspects have positives as well. There are lots of good free 30-minute youtube videos, some of them are a bit hippy dippy, but it works, and the increased flexibility will help your golf game too

Yoga - yes, try this! We try to go 1-2 times a month here when the weather is nicer - it's fun, and we get a beer after (it's at a brewery).

That actually has a name, it's called white coat syndrome (well, not the part @1860VS was talking about with the buxom Eastern European)
