LIVE UPDATE THREAD The 2021 Grandaddy of Em All with Callaway Golf

So you guys were super safe then. Anyone yells " is there a doctor in the house?!" You had two that could step in haha.
Well, only one of them could help with "heart break". LOL! @Tevenor

I have a THP embroidered Mod Pouch which I brought to keep my backup battery and cables and was ecstatic to get the backpack and immediately put it on!

Got a picture of that bag?

Just gonna put this up here :)

Definitely came in handy at the Nest!!

Say what you will, she was super cute. A little crazy and off her rocker and absolutely drunk but blue eyes and dark hair. Had to comfort her. She was obviously in distress.

cm24’s full Wednesday recap!

Day one of competition. I drew the fortune of playing the legend himself in Finley and the legend in the making with Kim @callmedaddy Johnson.

Started off shamble on hole 1 of the Clive with the plan of “all gas no breaks.” @RealPretendPsychic hit a nice drive off the down the right side of the fairway and freed me up to go full send and boy did the new driver go! We had 188 into the first green to a back left pin and took advantage. I hit a nice 7 iron to about 15 feet below the hole, and RPP was greenside. 2 putts for birdie for me and an up and down birdie with a pop gave us the first hole despite a matching birdie from the ZC.
2nd hole was a very nice little par 3 with the pin up on the front part of the green. Pars all around and no blood there.
The 3rd hole was an adventure. Both RPP and I put our tee shots in the right water or worse (like a former NFL coach’s yard). The ZC left the door open though thanks to a very unfortunate break for Darth when his punch shot got caught a tree and never came down leading to an unplayable. Kim was able to salvage a bogey and won the hole for the ZC to even up the match.
RPP and I both managed to find the water again on 4 off the tee. Just a bad hole for me as my shot from 170 after a drop on an awkward lie by the hazard landed on the cart part just left of the green and launched OB to take me out of the hole. RPP gave us a chance to pull out a tie on the hole, but the ZC ended up taking a 1 up lead into the 5th tee thanks to a bogey from Kim.
5 was where the match started to change. Finley and Kim both found the left rough or fairway bunker a decent ways back. We smashed that door open when they gave us the chance. Just like hole 1, RPP put out beauty and let me uncork on the new Callaway. We had probably a 60 yard or more advantage on them from the middle of the fairway. Pars from me and RPP who popped for a net birdie brought the match to all square.

6 was a really pretty par 4 that only played about 320 total. We all hit irons off the tee, but the ZC had roughly 20 yards more into the green than us and had a blind shot on top of it. They ended up with a bogey, and I hit the green for a 2 putt par to win the hole.

7 was another really nice short par 3. We dodged a bullet on this hole after I put a chunky PW into the drink and the ZC put it to about 12 ft below the hole for birdie. Thankfully RPP hit one greenside, and we both were able to get up and down for par, and they couldn’t convert the birdie. THP still 1 up with 2 to play.

8 was a getable par 5, and this hole showed why RPP and I made such a good pairing. He hit his tee ball into the junk on the right, so I choked up a touch and made a smooth swing with the perfect sweet fairway finding fade, which worked to perfection. The ZC also found the fairway but chose to lay up and wedge in. From my drive, we had about 220 to the pin and 190 to the front right mouth of the green. My partner threaded it perfectly through the mouth and funneled to about 15 feet from the hole in 2. Since he was in good position, I took dead aim at the pin. It was 200 to carry a bunker that was more like a cliff wall with lots of powdery sand. I took a 5 iron with the thought that it usually flies about 205-210 and it wouldn’t go long, which was dead! Not sure if I mishit it by a hair or misjudged the wind, but I caught the bunker about 6 inches from the top lip (thankful it didn’t embed), and it rolled all the way to the bottom. RPP finished it off with a 2 putt birdie to close out the ZC 2&1 in match 1 to give us our first point of the 2021 Grandaddy!

The back nine was the best ball. On hole 10, I was slightly stymied after a little tug left off the tee. I only had about 130 to the hole but had to avoid some palm trees and had to punch & run it up the left side and hope to get a kick to the right onto the green. It didn’t, and I had to get up and down from greenside above the hole. Probably should’ve tried to putt it, but actually hit a decent chip. I left myself a 10 footer up the hill that I really should’ve made and it just ran the bottom lip to give the ZC a 1 up lead.

Hole 11 was ANOTHER picturesque par 3. Our group had 3 putts from inside about 15 feet for birdie and none of us could convert. All pars and we were heading to hole 12 still down down 1.

Hole 12 was a really sweet hole. I mashed a 3 wood to about 90 yards off the green in the middle of the fairway. In true Darth fashion, he hits a high quality golf shot. Clearly he had played here before because he took advantage of a nice slope right of the hole and funneled it to about 10 feet. I made a par and never really gave it a run for birdie after a bad misread. Definitely dodged a bullet with Finley missing that birdie putt that would’ve put them 2 up through 3.

Hole 13 was a strange hole. To simplify it, we lost 3 balls on our 2nd shots that we all thought were safely in play. RPP won the hole just because he was only one to finish. All square through 4.

Hole 14 was our chance for us to gain control of the match. The ZC was struggling to make a par, I had a birdie putt to win the hole. I just tugged it a touch and gave it too much pace. I was in with par and Kim was next to putt from about 8 feet for par. She BURIED it with confidence. However, RPP still had a 5 footer for par with a pop to win the hole. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take advantage and went to hole 15 all square.

Hole 15 was a tough one for us to tie from the beginning thanks to it being the 18th handicap hole. Despite being a 200 yard par 3, I had to give a stroke. Kim hit a beauty to about 20 feet for an easy 2 putt par and a win to go back 1 up with 3 to play.

Hole 16 was where the match essentially ended. Finley and I both found the fairway with irons off the tee while Kim and RPP both put their tee shots left of the fairway up on the hill. Neither of them had a shot at the green, so Kim took an unplayable and RPP pitched out to the fairway. Finley had probably 90 yards in from the fairway and left it short just off the front side of the side. I had 60 yards to the hole and 55.7 yards to carry the front edge of the green. First partial wedge shot off grass in a round in 6 weeks, and I made a super tentative swing. Left it well short and couldn’t get up and down for par. Horrible bogey from me to go dormie with 2 to play.

Down 2 with 2 to play meant we needed to make something happen on the par 5 17th hole, especially considering everyone had a pop. Both of us from THP blocked our drives a touch right, but they did find their way into the junk. We couldn’t find either and had to both take a lost ball. We conceded the hole and gave the ZC a 3&1 win.

Didn’t always have my best golf on day 1, but wow did I have fun with @RealPretendPsychic, @JasonFinleyCG, and @callmedaddy Kim Johnson! Thank you all for such a fun round. I am beyond grateful I had the opportunity to play with each of you, and also a huge shoutout to the OG host Mr. Danny P, the 2000x Hideaway Club Champion and just a gracious individual.

After the round, it was off to Al’s for the best food I think I’ve ever ate. A lot of the stuff that happened at Al’s can’t be shared until later, but the conversations were top notch. The team attire might have been the best idea ever, and we were so excited to finally break those out!

2. Knowing @dacatalyst41 was getting an opportunity to stand on that balcony and say goodbye to not only this experience, but also for some personal closure. It sounds dumb to those who haven't been there, but overlooking that balcony has a calming effect and puts into perspective a lot of things.
While I was just a "normal" participant in this, knowing that he's been here before, knowing he got to come back, knowing what his year was like. I was so freaking happy for him to be able to do that.

I decided not to say "goodbye" to the course myself. More of a "see you soon" hoping I can one day help another team do this all over again.

Random thought? Any of the team have major distance changes whether they typically play at way above sea level or much closer to it.
Yup. I play at 3,800 feet regularly. Going down to essentially sea level, boy did it have an impact. And it had more of an impact than I thought it should. A LOT of that had to do with strike quality since I wasn't swinging very well most of the week, but there were ones I felt like I pured that still came up short even after clubbing up. It was more of a challenge than I was anticipating

We were so excited for that reveal!! @NickMcCG might have had the best reaction 🤣
We showed Paul on the walk up to Al's house from the bus and his reaction was fantastic as well! He loved them so much
