EXPERIENCE The 2024 Titleist Experience

Today after work I traveled to Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor NY for my Titleist Fitting with Matt Stasiak. First, this was not a course I have ever been to even though it's less than 30 minutes away and I will be remedying that ASAP. Absolutely beautiful looking course and practice facility. I arrived and headed towards the range.

It was at this point I got overexcited and promptly forgot to continue taking pictures throughout the process.

After chatting with Matt a bit while warming up, discussing generalities as well me explaining the awesomeness that is THP, we got down to work. First up was driver. I am currently playing a TaylorMade Sim2 Max 10.5º (Matt said it was his favorite TM head. Apparently he used to do fittings for TM a few years back) with a Fujikara Ventus TR Red 6 S. I explained I had been fit into the shaft last year but already had the head at that point. We talked some about my misses and what I hope to see. I explained that my miss used to be predominately a slice, due to an over the top move and not closing the face, but lately I have been getting the face closed resulting in either straight flight or a left pull. Ideally I would like to see some tighter dispersion, more distance, and less spin. I tend to have a negative attack angle and can get super spinny. I told him that's why I've been playing Left Dash and AVX and after a few swings he said "yeah, Left Dash is exactly the ball for you." I bemoaned Left Dot not being an option. He agreed. After a few swings with my gamer it was very apparent my best swing was not with us and the slice was showing up. We were also using hard as a rock range balls, so he mentioned to not really pay attention to carry numbers on their own, but just in relation to each other.

Not great, but gave us something to work with. He grabbed a Ventus Red 6S out of the rack, put it in a GT2 head and it was time for the fun to start. I took a few swings with the GT2, and it felt good. Definitely felt fast. But I was having a little trouble controlling it. It also looked a touch big to my eye. So he popped the Ventus into a GT3 head. I put it down and immediately commented how good it looked behind the ball. Took one swing with it, dead center contact, crisp, fantastic sound, and a slight fade down the middle that went farther than any shot up that point. Matt immediately said "THAT was a golf shot, but a little low." So he swapped the 9º for a 10º and had me hit another. Even better flight. "Let's find a shaft and dial it in."

As he was looking at what shaft to grab, he asked if I had any preferences. I said whatever he thought would do the best job and I was willing to hit anything. From there he asked about how my swing had changed since the fitting that put me in the Ventus, and I mentioned it had gotten smoother, with more intentional tempo at the top. He let out a knowing "mmhmm" and grabbed a Tensei 1K Blue 6 S. This got the spin down a bit and flight was good, but carry was a little short. Next up was Ventus Blue 6 S. Another decent fit, but the Tensei felt better to me and Matt thought we could do better. Next was a Graphite Design AD UB 6 S. This was even better, but I felt like I was losing the head a bit, and therefore launch was a little low and the slice was back. Well, it was more pronounced, it never really left. After one hit with the UB Matt told me to give it back. He handed it back, said "this is gonna be it," and I gave it a rip. Immediately I knew he was right. I could track the head the whole way, got a bit more launch, but it still leaked a bit right. This was the shaft, now we just needed to fine tune. Up until that point we were just hitting in A1 and N on the GT3 weight track. He made a few adjustments and handed it back. I purposely didn't ask what he did as I wanted to not bring and preconceived ideas into the swing. What resulted was easily the best couple shots of the session. Carry was up almost significantly, launch was up, and spin was hovering in the 2200 rpm window (again, with rock hard range balls). And the slice was now just a fade, and there were a couple pulls, a sign I was getting the face closed. We had our driver. Matt explained that we had gone up to A3, so added 1.5º of loft and brought it upright because I was setting up with the toe a bit flat. He also added +4 weight to the weight track and moved it to H2. I had immediately noticed the head had felt heavier and was bringing some more stability. Matt explained that when he was fitting TSR he rarely messed with adding or subtracting weight, but weight changes in GT were providing significant gains depending on the player. Possibly because of the new materials weight. I said that was one of the things I was most excited to ask Josh, Stephanie, and Jacqueline about, and he mentioned he was a touch jealous about how much cool knowledge we were going to have access to. It was time to move on to fairway woods. But first, the final specs for driver:

Sadly it was the last photo I took, but Matt said he was going to try to send me the full TrackMan Report.
I think you are the first to get a weight mod! That is definitely something to discuss at the event. Something to ponder and test perhaps? It did. It come up in my fitting.

The shaft change was huge! Big gains in carry and total. Just a week and change until it goes into play!

On to the Fairway Woods portion of the fitting. Matt asked what I was hoping to see and what my setup currently was. I explained that my 3w was easily my least hit club, it was probably not a great fit for me, and was primarily a tee club for really long par 3s. I also said I tended to use the 19º UW for most shots where I should probably hit 3w, as well as 200-210 yard par 3s. He said "so, 3w and 5w" and I said, "honestly, I'm down to try anything" and his eyes literally lit up as he asked "7 wood?" I said sure. Cool. That means we can try both 15 and 16.5, to which I said we can also try the 13.5 and again his eyes lit up as he said "this is gonna be fun."

After hitting a couple terrible shots with my Stealth 2 Plus 15º it was time for GT. First up was a 15º GT3. We started with Ventus Red again, just as it was a profile I knew from my driver. I hit 3 shots, one good, one decent, and one topped very, very badly. So badly I apologized. Matt laughed and assured me the clubs had been thru worse today. He then asked if I had any intentions of hitting 3w off the deck and I answered only in extreme situations. I was mostly just looking for an additional tee club that I could rely on. He ruled out hitting the 16.5º and pulled the 13.5º GT2. I cannot adequately describe how good this club looked behind the ball to me. I proceeded to hit 3 lasers, 2 down the middle, and one left because I set up terribly. There was no need to hit the 15º GT2, this was the head. Shaft time. He handed it back to me with a Ventus Blue 7 S and said, I think this will be better but I think it'll show me my actual instinct is correct. Cryptic, but again, three great, totally playable shots were made. But he thought we could get a little more launch, and a little less spin. So he took it back made some adjustments and handed it back. The shaft was orange, so I immediately knew he had handed me an AD DI 7 S. And he was exactly right. I cannot wait to have this club in my bag. Every shot out of it was a shot I would be more than happy to see on the course. And I still didn't have my A swing. And I hate 3 woods (or at least my previous ones.) The extra tinkering was Matt adding +4 and moving this club to A3 as well. He mentioned at this point, that's the extreme and it would be easy to adjust to any of the other 3 settings when the swing was more consistent. He also said he suspected I would ultimately shift the weight track in the driver back towards N at some point. Next up was 7 wood.

Screenshot 2024-08-28 at 7.31.10 PM.png

Sadly, the 7 wood didn't really work. I launched it high, but was too spinny, and wasn't getting the distance my gapping would like. Matt said, I think 5 will gap better with the 13.5º anyways, but I wanted you to hit it. So to the 18º we went. From the jump he said let's stay in GT2 and just go straight to +4 and A3. Again we started with Ventus Red. The issue here was going to be the fact there aren't many 5w length shaft options so we were going to be choking up on 3w shafts. I mentioned this might not end well, and he said he can't really do it well either but we could get what we need. After one shot, the Ventus Red was clearly not right as I hit a massive pop up and mentioned it felt like I was fighting the head. Next was the AD DI, but I was still having a bit of an issue with fighting the head in my timing. Perhaps we had too much weight for this club. So he swapped the +4 for +2. This was better, but still wasn't what either of us wanted to really see. If this was supposed to be a 200+ish club, the job wasn't getting done as I was still struggling to make consistent clean contact. I was low on the face too much. He grabbed a new shaft. We were back in the AD UB. But he also made me take a break and we chatted for about 10 minutes about some of the irons he had in the fitting bags, what he played, etc. I didn't mention it to him, but by this point, my wrist was starting to hurt a bit, reminiscent of the way it hurt during the winter. This was in the back of my head now, but I tried to not let it affect me.

We reset up to hit and he tossed me some actual RCT Pro V1s, and immediately, this was the ticket. Nice, easy, center face baby fades, that launched high and fit the distance window we wanted. It would only get better when the length was correct he said. The trick was a slightly stouter shaft in the UB over the DI but we also went down to a 6 S since we dropped weight in the head. That's it, we were done.

All in all, this was a truly incredible fitting experience. It may have spoiled me as I can't imagine getting fit indoors will ever feel as great as a green grass fitting now. Even though my wrist is screaming at me right now as I type this, I had the best day I've had in a while. I cannot thank Matt, Titleist, @JB, @GolferGal, and everyone else at THP enough. I absolutely cannot wait to get to Hidden Creek and put these clubs thru the paces, even if I do carry this wrist injury for a bit. Luckily, I have the shortest wait to get my clubs by virtue of having the latest fitting.

That's it.

We need to make it a habit to announce, “7 wood?” When ever someone hits one from now on.

Great write up! Love how I to the fittings the reps are. They make for a great experience and I’m glad you had some fun testing out multiple shaft options.

1. What was your favourite part of the fitting?

3. What was different than fittings you’ve done in the past?
This was my first fairway wood fitting ever. FWs (and tee shots in general) and I have a troubled past and this fitting helped me gain confidence that I have the best clubs in hand to help my game.

I learned that even though the head is a huge factor in what works best for me, the shaft is not the ‘10%’ factor that thought it was. It played a bigger role in my fitting. I couldn’t hit a few options to save my life, where as others were effortlessly consistent and hit the right numbers. I want to learn more about shaft options moving forward.

Most fittings have been indoors for me, save for last years’ Titleist iron fitting. Seeing the ball flight in person is a big deal in believing the track man numbers, and turf interaction for clubs other than driver is important to feel during a fitting. Also, instead of going through a bunch of manufacturers, this fitting dove deep into the tech of the new Titleist GT line.

2. What did you learn from it?
3. What was different than fittings you’ve done in the past?
The favorite part of my fitting was my fitter. He was chill, friendly, knowledgeable, but not pushy. Like I said, I think he was just as excited as I was and it meant I was just hitting, not overthinking what he was handing me or worried about not having my best swing.

I directly learned that choking up on a long club is not something I can really do. And I learned sometimes there are multiple ways to get to the same numbers, but one package will be easier to do so, or more repeatable, etc. and that’s what we’re really looking for.

It was different in that it was green grass, which one might thing matters less because most of the shots hit were off a tee, but I think it’s just as important for those shots. Unless the mat fitting has an adjustable tee (which some do) getting tee height correct is also part of the equation. Also seeing ball flight is a big helping factor. I also liked it more than the one Club Champion fitting I had because I didn’t immediately have numbers in front of me. I had to reach to the look and feel of the shot first. I love all the numbers, but I wasn’t chasing them. Lastly I think only having a limited number of heads to try helped. I’m regretting not hitting GT4, even though it wouldn’t have worked, but otherwise don’t feel like there was an option I missed out on which helps me feel confident we landed every where we should.

All the fittings wrapped up for the crew, and a couple questions for my fellow participants.

1. What was your favourite part of the fitting?
2. What did you learn from it?
3. What was different than fittings you’ve done in the
Two things really stood out to me. Going in I was thinking GT2 might be best fit since I was fit into the TSR2. Much to my surprise and delight the GT3 was such a better fit.

The other thing was the shaft for the 4 wood. We settled quickly on the GT2 16.5. That shaft was the time consuming part. Came down to the AD DI and the Tensei Black. With the Tensei the clubhead seemed like an extension of my arm. Effortless swing and contact.

Biggest thing I learned is how it feels when head and shaft are matched perfectly.

Least favorite part however was the fact that fitter forgot his trackman and I have very little data.

This was a first for me in a green grass driver fitting and have never done more in the fairway department other than an indoor shaft fitting for the 3 wood that is soon to be kicked from the bag.

2. What did you learn from it?
3. What was different than fittings you’ve done in the past?

1. Favorite part of the fitting: That first swing after the fitter popped the Ventus Red 6X into the GT3 driver head. We obviously kept going, but the truth is, it just took one swing, and I KNEW that was the combo for me. Seeing the next four or so balls follow with the exact same flight gave the fitter the data he needed, but for me, it just took that one swing. I felt everything I'd been trying to work on with my swing, but felt like I was fighting the shaft to achieve, come together.

2. What I learned from it: Somehow, even an hour isn't enough time! We switched to the Ventus Red toward the end of the fitting. I wish I'd had a chance to spend more time with the fairway woods and go back and re-evaluate the GT2 13.5 and/or maybe a 5W instead of the 7W with the Ventus Red in them. What we settled on worked really well, but I'm a little concerned about how high the ball flights are going to be. The fitter was very focused on getting me to hit the ball higher, but I'll also have to see whether I can flight these down, especially on windy days, and whether the flight is so high that I'm losing distance potential. This is the kind of thing that some actual experience on the golf course can answer.

3. Difference vs. previous fittings: Mainly the weight. Titleist fittings are done using actual Titleist adapters, as opposed to universal adapters you'd find at non-branded fitting studios. With those universal adapters, you're often hitting clubs that have like a D7, D8, D9 swing weight -- which is not the right swing weight for virtually anybody. With a Titleist fitting, what you hit is what you're going to get. I love that.

I don't know about you guys, but I can hardly stand waiting to get these new clubs in my hands!

The third-longest-club spot in my bag has been a never-ending rotation of stuff I'm not quite happy with. Right now I have a 3 hybrid that's terrific off the tee, but just doesn't really fly high enough for me off the deck. I also have a 4 hybrid that I experimented with -- dropped it from 22 to 21 degrees, swapped out the 12g weight in the back for a 6g to make sure the swing weight is right, and put my 0.5" longer 3 hybrid shaft in it. I thought that might be the solution ... but no; I get more height but with more loft it just spins more and doesn't give me quite the distance I need.

I keep thinking back to that fitting, how the 7 wood was flying 205-210 on this beautiful, high trajectory. That's the height I need, and exactly the distance I need to fill that gap.

The waiting is hard! I have a specific problem, and I know the solution ... but I just have to be patient for about nine more days.

So excited!

By this time next Friday I’ll be in Philly.
Bag will be comprised of a completely new top end.
Driver GT3
3 wood TSR2+ primarily 2nd tee option
4 wood GT2 set at 16.5
4 hybrid TSR2 21° bought it the other day just because I wanted to give it a try. It is easily the best hybrid I’ve ever used. Makes me look forward to the GTs to release a little later
Bag will be anchored with SM10s
50 08 F
54 12 D
58 08 M
Putter TBD later
Ball ProV1

Love it.

King Forged Tec irons safe for now?

When the GT hybrids come out, I'm wondering about maybe adding a 21 degree as a windy day substitute for the 7 wood. I'll have plenty of time before those hybrids come out to experiment with the 7W and see if I can flight it down, or if I really do need an alternative in wind. I've hit the TSR3 21 degree and it's a freaking rocket launcher -- mid, penetrating flight, not much spin.

Nothing has taken them out of bag yet.

Unless the mat fitting has an adjustable tee (which some do) getting tee height correct is also part of the equation.
I love that you mentioned this because it's SUCH a big deal. I've had entire fittings in the past where I felt like everybody's time was wasted because I was manipulating my delivery to make the wrong tee height work.

For indoor fittings, I like when they have those little tees that look like shuttlecocks that come in tons of different sizes. It at least gives you a chance to find one that's your preferred height.

Had another real good day off the tee box with the fitting setting. 8 more days 😁

Time is nearing. Cleaned all non essentials out of bag today.

Just got an email from DTC specialist at Titleist saying they have my driver and fairway and need an address where to send it. I’m beginning g to think fitter might have messed something up

It’s all taken care of now. No fault of the folks at Titleist.

Love how detailed you all got with the fittings. Gives you all tons of questions to carry forward to the Titleist crew on the experience!

Will be hitting up the pro shop at Hidden Creek hard. Swinging Pete will be making the trip also. IMG_0141.jpegIMG_0140.jpeg
