Thanks for the progression of fitting details. I hate seeing my own numbers but like seeing it from others. Finally I have some time to sit down and get a post together on my T-series fitting today...
My fitting was scheduled at 11AM this morning with Colin Fisher at 1757 Golf Club. I arrived ten minutes early and was able to get warmed up and hit a few balls before my fitting began. At the appointed time Colin introduced himself and brought me into his fitting studio. We spent a few minutes going over my current setup. He asked about my current configuration and I explained that the z585s I'm currently playing were bought off the used rack and that the +1/2" shaft length was merely the way I found them. I confirmed standard loft and lie with them (PW @44deg) and let him know I was warmed up and ready to go.
I'll start my fitting journey at the end. After we finished up this was the composite dispersion and trajectory pattern for all the different clubs I hit. We used 7i throughout:

Starting off we got the baseline using my current 7i:

Fortunately, I brought a good swing with me and I think I hit these shots about as well as I could have hoped for. Feedback from Colin: too much height and more spin than he would like to see. Not unexpected. Looking back, I think Colin pretty much knew at this point where I was headed, and it was just a matter of confirming it. One thing he did emphasize was to approach each shot in the fitting as I would if I were out playing. It makes sense since it would keep me from rapid fire grooving a swing and would let the typical misses creep in throughout, which they did.
After we went over the baseline numbers, Colin told me he wanted to try the first club with a more upright lie angle to mitigate the left-right of my current 7i. We used the AMT Silver as the stock shaft throughout:

We ruled this one out quickly being short and left. For the next 7i we stayed at +1/2 but went to 1up and 1 strong:

This one was more promising but was still around what I was getting from my gamer, despite the inconsistent clubhead delivery. Contestant number 3 was still +1/2" length and 1 up, 1 strong:

I think we were both expecting a bit more out of this one than what I got. I thinned one and had the club slip a bit during another, but even so the numbers would still be in line with my current 7i. During the head changes we talked about my current shafts, what I liked/disliked, and what I was looking for in the new set. I have high praise for the Nippon Modus 105s that live in my gamers, but I expressed an interest in possibly moving to composite for some extra shock dampening. He agreed but suggested we stay with a similar shaft weight. We also discussed the different strategies he has at his disposal to bring spin down, including shaft options and strengthening loft. Colin explained that he preferred to work through the different heads before strengthening lofts, since taking too much loft off a club could have the side effect of not producing enough spin from imperfect lies. He said that avoiding more extreme loft changes helps guard against too much spin reduction and not enough spin can be worse than too much.
Contestant number 4 was up, still at +1/2", 1 up, 1 strong:

These were good strikes and I though we might have found my match, but Colin didn't like the spin numbers here, as they tended too far in the low range. He made another change and handed me a new club to test. This time it had a composite shaft but that's the only thing I discerned as different. Contestant #5:

Chicken dinner. Before making the choice final Colin gave me a 5i in the same configuration to confirm that the distance gap aligned. Thumbs up there. Finally he had me hit my 4h and we confirmed it would gap acceptably as well.
Now the moment you've all been waiting for - our contestants, in order of appearance:
And the belle of the ball:
- Srixon z585, 1/2" long, standard loft and lie, Nippon Modus 3 Tour 105
- Titleist T100, 1/2" long, 2 up, 1 strong, True Temper AMT Silver
- Titleist T150, 1/2" long, 1 up, 1 strong, True Temper AMT Silver
- Titleist T250, 1/2" long, 1 up, 1 strong, True Temper AMT Silver
- Titleist T350, 1/2" long, 1 up, 1 strong, True Temper AMT Silver
Final set composition: T350 5-W, standard loft/length, 1 up, SteelFiber i95.
- Titleist T350, Standard Loft and Length, 1 up, AeroTech SteelFiber i95
I had a great experience with Colin working through the options. The T350s really look svelte for a Game Improvement offering. Side by side with my current z585 it was only marginally longer in blade length and with just a touch more girth and offset. Titleist really did an incredible job with the shaping of this iron. I will also say that these were definitely built for blending, and I expect to see a few mixed sets at ArborLinks. I will also say that if you were going to buy based solely off the online selector tool...don't! Find a fitter and run through all the options. I probably ran through the tool a dozen or more times to see what configurations I could get to match and was pretty much a coin flip between the 150s and 250s. Now, I would happily play either, but I also wouldn't have the best fit for my particular swing.
Anybody going to have a full Titleist/Vokey/Scotty bag now?
Thanks for sharing this. Love seeing folks get irons that fit them well and they enjoy.Just got back from my T Series fitting. Great experience and we ended up with a sweet setup!
First off, thank you so much to Garrett and the Titleist team for this amazing experience, I cannot wait to play with these clubs in Nebraska!
Summary: My fitting resulted in 6-PW T250, 2 degrees weak, 1 degree upright, with Nippon Modus 3 Tour 105 shafts shortened by 0.5 inch. We added a GT2 5 hybrid with a Graphite Design Tour AD DI-85 shaft and a GT2 7 wood with a Mitsubishi Tensei 1K Blue 75 GT shaft. Ball: Pro V1x.
Fitter: My fitting was with Garrett Todd, outside at Northstone Golf Club in Huntersville, NC. No wind, no rain, 70 degrees and cloudy. Garrett was very professional and unbiased. He fit me into what worked best, did not ask my handicap, and made no assumptions about my game. He let me swing and fit me for what was right.
Expectations: I am a higher handicap (19.4) who tends to launch the ball too high, miss both ways, and chunk the ball. Going in, I expected to be fit into the T350 because I thought the forgiveness would solve my directional issues, and I hoped for a U505 1 or 3 iron as a long-iron option off the tee. I thought the T100 through T250 would be too hard to hit.
Things I wanted to improve: Direction, contact, and a lower ball flight with higher ball speed. Shaft fit.
Fitting process and results: I started by hitting my Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal 7 iron (28.5 degrees), reg steel shaft. It was the usual pattern for me: a bit high with left and right misses, though my swing felt good and the shots looked like my normal on-course results. Ball speed was in the high 70s. Garrett asked if my club tends to grab the ground and fails to take clean divots. I said yes. It is hard for me to keep speed through impact because the club catches the ground instead of cutting through.
First Breakthrough: Garrett had me try the T100 7 iron with a steel shaft. Right away, it felt good. I took a clean divot and the club sliced through the grass instead of getting caught. I hit three shots dead straight and farther than any with the JPX 923. Instant surprise. How was this possible with a less forgiving club set at 33 degrees of loft? My ball speed jumped to the low to mid 80s and I was not popping it up.
Next, we tried the T150. I did not hit it as well, so we ruled it out.
Third, we tried the T250. I hit it similar to the T100, a few yards longer, but a bit too high. Garrett weakened the loft and adjusted the lie, and I started getting results as good as the T100. Progress.
Finally, we got to the T350. It produced the similar distance and inconsistency I get from my Mizuno and did not work for me. Garrett reintroduced it a few times to see if it would click, but it was consistently the worst performer for my swing.
Second Breakthrough: We tried shafts. Two or three did not work and felt uncomfortable, then we put in the Nippon Modus 3 105. It was excellent and took me past my performance with the T100. We tested a few settings and settled on what gave me a straighter launch with a slight right-to-left bias. The club felt very natural with this shaft.
Third Breakthrough: Garrett noticed I was a bit hesitant to hit the ground and was clipping the ball, leading to some mishits. Part habit, part fit. I have long arms and the shafts may have been a bit too long. He had me choke up a good amount. I began taking a consistent divot and starting direction improved. Keeping the club a little lower through impact stopped the occasional top. This was the setup.
On to long irons: The 6 iron gapped well and worked with the same setup as the 7, so we moved to the 5. I saw diminishing returns and, on average, was hitting my 6 and even my 7 longer. I wanted to stay within the T Series irons, so we tried a 3 iron to chase distance. I started getting the carry I needed from the 5, about 175 yards, but the ball flight was not good enough, a 3 iron should go farther, and jumping from a 3 iron to a 6 iron made no sense.
Garrett then pulled a 5 hybrid with the Tour AD shaft. Instant success. It was easy to hit and gapped perfectly. Out with the 5 iron, in with the hybrid.
At this point, we felt good, but I had a large gap between the 5 hybrid and my current 3 wood. We decided it made more sense to add another club at the top and not include a gap wedge in the set, since I use a 52-degree Vokey and the 2-degree weak GW would be 50 degrees. I do not use a gap wedge currently anyway.
Final Breakthrough: Garrett pulled the GT2 7 wood and it worked great right away. It gave me another 15 yards and solved the gapping issue.
Final takeaways: What an experience. I did not expect to hit the T100 and T250 so much better than the T350. The T250 is a perfect fit for me. I can finally take a divot without fearing the club will get stuck and hurt my wrist. The ball flight is lower and faster, just as I hoped. Before, I would tweak my swing between shots to chase a result, and it was still a guess where the ball would go. With the T250, I could swing naturally without constant adjustments. I have never hit so many good shots at the range with the same club. I hoped the long irons would work, but the diminishing returns were not worth it. I am grateful we found longer clubs that fit, and I am thrilled with the GT2 5 hybrid and 7 wood.
