Many years ago I realized I didn't have enough club head speed to use a three wood. I got a Cobra 4 wood. It was great. Then In 2011 I got fit for my very first set of clubs. And for a fairway wood I ended up with a Ping K15 3 wood which at 16.5 degrees is really a four wood. It wa one of my favorite clubs. Now I have a PXG 0211 5 wood and it is the best of them all. Great of the fairway and tee. And just as long as the Ping K15.

Interesting timing on this Thread.
I had my Blondie Zing 5 Wood in my Bag since 92' and loved UT back when I played a Lot and well. Fast forward to getting back in the Game and found I was having a hard time with it off the Deck. Was testing the Callaway UW 17⁰ for THP and loved it off Tee and Deck, Hmmm...
Picked up 1st Gen 21⁰ UW and ever since the 5W has been sitting in spare Bag. These UWs are so reliable and consistent off Deck and Tee.

TaylorMade Qi10 Tour 5w. For me I like the ability to open the face at address to (hopefully) help eliminate the left miss. Also I prefer the height a 5w gives me over a 19 UW or 3 Hybrid

I play my 5w 3/4" short to help with control vs being a distance club.

I also like giving myself the versatility of having both a fairway (5w) and hybrid (4h) in the bag for different lies and shots. My 4h is set up to have a flatter flight than the 5w

I debated between a 5W and a strong hybrid.
I went with the Paradym Super Hybrid for the versatility of being able to play it from the fairway or the rough. The thing is a weapon, really launches the ball with great distance and accuracy.

I also play an Apex UW 19 but I cannot imagine swapping it out for a 5W

It does everything I need it to do.

@Jman - Just curious, what do you think you would get out of the 5W you aren't getting out of your UW? You forget more about clubs than I will ever learn so I am interested to hear what you think.

Nothing, hahahaha

Just boredom really. My OG UW has been in the bag years now, that’s odd for me.

Pre that club though, I was a 5w guy, so there’s some fun there I miss. Wouldn’t add distance really, so I don’t know why I ponder it

Thanks for the insight - boredom is a perfectly acceptable answer 🤜

I changed from a 3 hybrid to a 5 wood (currently a Callaway Epic) about two years ago. Its a 190-200 yard club for me, and I found the 5 wood was just easier for me to make solid contact with and just carried better at a similar loft. While I hit the 4 hybrid fine, I had struggled with the 3 for a while before that.

Love my Stealth 2+ 5 wood. I have it turned down to basically a 4 wood and dropped my 3 wood. Can use it on short par 4s off the tee, can use it for long approaches off the deck. Have hit many great shots with it in the past couple of years. Been one of the most consistent clubs in my bag since it came out. Not going anywhere any time soon.

I don't have a DarkSpeed 5w but if I did the LS model is beastly

My 5-wood is my favourite club followed by the driver. It has been in the bag for 20 years and it will retire with me. It was made by a master club fitter who was touring around the world. At the time he was working for the Australian distributor for Penley golf shafts. He was able to find a shaft that met my specs that didn't have to be tipped.

Yes, the Darkspeed X, and it’s my 230 full shot down to about 215/210 depending on what I need. Can play it high and soft or low bullets almost on command, and retains ball speeds like f-ing crazy. It’s my favorite club in the bag and it’s so consistent.
I absolutely second this. Emphatically. I love it off the tee when I know I have to hit fairway, it’s extremely easy to hit off the turf, and very workable. It’s my favorite club in my bag and it’s the first 5w I’ve played in decades.

I’m gonna make it out to Oklahoma and we’re going to have a 5w’s only competition lol

My 5W is the favorite club in my bag (with my 9i). I love my Ping G430 5W with the stock chrome tour 2.0 75g stiff shaft

I have a Ping G425 5w and it is a weapon for me. If I was buying a new one right now the G430 would be on my short list. I am not nearly as long as @Jman so it is a 195-200 yard carry shot that can land soft on the green. It is a great club for me.

I've used both a driving iron and 5w recently. I either have them both in the bag or if playing in a tournament pick one based on land angle and dispersion.

I love my Paradym 5W. Has perfect spin and good launch window. It cuts through longish rough pretty well also, which is something I can't do with my Apex UT.

For me, my 5w and driving iron do different things. One is mid-high launch the other is low-mid launch (and landing angle). I can hit a nice punch shot with the iron that can run for days.

Sure, there are other threads, but sometimes you need a new one.

It’s that annual time for me where I contemplate replacing my favorite club, Apex UW 19, with a 5W.

But this thread is to see who games a 5W? Why? What model? What shot is it for, for you?

Not really what you asked, but with the mini driver in the bag and all I’ve found no real need for a true 5w. I don’t need it off the tee now, and I’m really comfortable with mini off the deck. I’ve struggled a bit choosing the bag and have found, for me, either the Apex UW or a Utility iron serves me better in that spot.

That said, from the time I’ve spent on the course the Qi10 core AND the Tour models have been my favorite to date. I think both don’t get enough credit for what they are. The Standard core is just really solid across every type of hit, but I found the tour is my favorite for when I miss the fairway on a par 5 and leave myself with some work. But neither of those justified replacing the Apex, which to me is the perfect hybrid/fairway blend

Mizuno ST-Z 230 5W. It’s a combination of all the shots but if I had to pick one it’s the high, baby draw that lands soft into a par 5. I like having options that let me be aggressive.

usually to center the ball down a long fairway and make for a short 3rd shot...into the green...close to the pin...

2007 TM Burner TP 5 Wood 17.5º, REAX Superfast 75 TP Stiff

I have had a 5w in the bag since I started playing golf at the age of 10. Currently game the Ai Smoke Max and this club is so clutch. It's a point and shoot and rarely lets me down. I love it for par 5s, whether I can make it in 2 or not. It has a high trajectory and lands soft into greens and when I don't have the chance to go for it in 2 I usually pull it anyways because it's probably the most reliable club in my bag.

Ai Smoke 5 Wood.
Why? Hybrids don't agree with me, and I thought it would gap well with a Heavenwood.
Reality? The Heavenwood and 5 Wood are typically interchangeable in my bag.

I definitely hit the 5W better than I hit the 3 Wood options..... but at the same time I believe I hit the Heavenwood about the same as the 5 Wood.
This is the issue I had.
AI Smoke Heavenwood and Rogue ST Max 5wd go the the same distance, with the H just having a higher flight. I like the smaller foot print of the 5wd though.
I tend to over draw them both, not quite a "hook", and am working on figuring that out.
I also have 21* Paradym Super Hybrid that I just got, trying to fit that 190 carry spot. Unfortunately, CPO sent me the wrong shaft (Dart 65 F2) so it may go back for one with the 75 f3. Need a good range session to decide.

Honestly, if I had to do it all over again, I would probably go 3HL then HW, or even go crazy and go Heavenwood then Hybrid.

I have too much gap between the Driver and 5W/HW, but currently don't hit a 5W consistently enough to warrant something like a 3 or 3HL. If I can't hit the 3W option, it can't fill the spot lol.
