The 60 and over Thread

I just played my first round after a multi-week road trip and I kinda reverted back to some issues I had when I first started playing the Halos - pretty hard pull to the left. I’m sure it’s a grip issue.
I also have to fight a pull hook or over-draw with mine. They are the only iron that I've been able to play with the face aligned properly to the target or even a hair open at address. Even then, if I don't make a proper turn on the downswing, I can hook them. Most other irons are the opposite. I have to hood them a little at address to prevent pushes.

Got back from the VA and got my new hearing aids, they work great.

Played Tot Hill Farm today In Asheboro, NC. A Mike Strantz course that was recently restored to original design
Wow….. I actually KNEW Mike Strantz way back when. We worked together on the greens crew at a small, country golf course out in the sticks. I was a school teacher just starting out, and he was a high school student at another nearby school. We and the rest of the crew played many rounds after work, starting on the 14th hole (right next to the maintenance building), and playing wherever we could find an empty hole! Good times…..He was a great guy, and I was sorry to hear of his passing way too young of cancer….

Sounds like some great memories!

He sure carved out tot hill. Also played Tobacco Road not terribly long aft it opened.

I just rolled over 5000 messages.

Happy Thanksgiving to all on this thread, we are having ours Thursday, because one grandson is in Bangkok and won't be back until Friday.
Appreciate the sentiment, but HUH? Are you intentionally leaving the grandson out or did you get the days mixed up?

I got the days mixed up, having it Saturday.

Oddly enough, I’ve never played one of his courses…although I’d like to !!! After high school, Strantz went to Michigan State University in Turf Grass Management, and in the summer of 1979, he was doing an internship at Inverness here in Toledo during the U.S. Open.

That was the Open when the USGA planted the infamous “Hinkle Tree” to the left of #8 tee because a pro named Lon Hinkle and some others had played the par 5 8th by driving out into a parallel fairway to shorten the hole (gasp!). The USGA wasn’t going to stand for that, so overnight, they imported a big pine tree to prevent playing the hole the “wrong way!” In the picture below, the guy standing to the left, looking up at the tree is none other than Mike Strantz!! By the way, Mike arranged for a few of us course workers to play a round with him at Inverness about a month before the Open….quite a thrill…!!!

Yes, I know. In fact I started a conversation about that in here last week if you can recall, questioning near to or scratch handicaps from Senior tees. In a scenario where you or I were playing a 5200 yard/105 course, we’d probably need to shoot an average score of 66 or 67 to have a scratch handicap.
64.9 rating 109 slope, so, to be scratch, you’re best 8 of the last 20 scores would have to in the 62-67 range. It’s fun to be able to go low, but going that low is not easy. So, here’s the thing, if you move up and your scores don’t go lower, you got other problems IMNSHO. At the muni at 5300 yards, I potentially can hit 12 approaches with a PW or less. If I play the 5600 yard combo tees, it’s down to 8 approaches with PW or less. At the club at 5900 yards, it’s 5 potential approaches with a PW. I think the average on tour is 7 or 8 approaches with PW or less. Want the potential to score like the like a pro, then take your average driving distance times 24. Play the tees closest to that yardage and have fun.

Today was probably the last hurrah for the year with tomorrow being thanksgiving and the weather going to crap for the next week. I have a procedure scheduled for the 3rd that will have me out of commission for lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk for 3-4 weeks. I guess it’s a good time of year to get it done. That said, today was nothing special. Just me and another guy. I walked, he rode, we played in 2:35. You all have a nice thanksgiving day tomorrow. Enjoy.

They don't make a course that short.:)

love the last 2 lines - if I do that the yardage falls right between the yardages of the 3 combo's my course has next year - so looks like I might have picked the correct course and gold tees to play next year and have some fun

My right hip kills me when I get out of bed in the morning. I can’t lift the leg on my own. Gotta sit to put on a sock🙄. It gets better shortly afterwards amd I’m fine the rest of the day.

My wife says I should go for a cortisone shot. I told her I should just NOT get out of bed.

The Club has very sloped greens and they are deceptive, hard to read. You learn, when in doubt, to play more break than you see and that downhill putts are hard to get the speed right. watch some of the crazy putts at the Masters or at Oakmont sometime.

Reminds me of one of our favorite courses in this area, but at least three of the greens are borderline unfair. Just like the first green at the muni we play. They are built into such steep slopes that it's hard to realize the slope in the green itself.

One of the flattest greens on the course is set on a severe downslope so it looks like it’s sloped from back to front when it is slightly sloped from front to back. Putting from the front to the back of the green it looks uphill, but it’s slightly downhill, so most people run their putts 6-10’ by. It’s shear trickery I tell you.

Golf somewhat on the back burner as today we buried my dad! It’s been tough the last few days at the holiday time but we will work to get through it!
I’ll pop in later but gonna take a break a bit I think! Just a lot going on! Hope all you cool dudes in here have a great Thanksgiving!

I could have played yesterday and/or today. It was colder and much windier so it would have been a challenge. I played so well Monday that I did not want to go out and lay an egg. Monday I played the 5,100 yard, par 68, city executive course in 70 strokes. If I am not going to play again until March, I don’t want my last round to be a stinker.

Very sorry to hear of your father's passing. Especially tough during the holidays. My dad passed when 33 years ago and I still miss him. Just remember all the good times. 🙏 for you and family.

I recently found a Bridgestone e6 ball and put it into play on a few holes where there is a lot of trouble, not minding if I lost it. Well, I found the performance to be outstanding, long off the driver with high launch and great "carry", and pretty decent on approached and around the green. I really liked the way it felt off the driver, too. So, I then put it into play for an entire round.

Carrying a single-digit handicap for as long as I can remember, I've always used "tour caliber" balls, three-piece or four-piece balls from Callaway, TaylorMade or one of the better OTC brands like Vice or Snell. Based on how this e6 has performed, I'm thinking of making this two-piece ball my daily gamer. Another benefit is price, even less per dozen than Vice's 6 dozen for the price of 5 dozen deals when they have them. Have any others switched from so-called "tour" balls to two-piece balls because they have performed better for you?
You should try the Volvik XT. 3 dozen urethane balls for 60 bucks! I have been playing it at the sim. It may be softer than I prefer. But the performance is nothing short of amazing at that price point.

Sorry to hear about your dad. My heart goes out to you and your family. I remember years ago we lost my Grandmother two days before Thanksgiving. We tried our best to get through the day for the young children, but it wasn’t easy. Stay strong, boggy.
