The Car Shopping Thread

My son had one he was flipping and needed it delivered. I drove it. I had no visions that car was anything special. But after driving it I was in awe. And a few years old and a 140k car could be had for 50k. Personally all of my passions for older/classic go foreign. The art of the deal is all about the buy. So many really have no idea about the value of their older car.....hence I have moved in/out of about 7 Porsches...I have sold at auction a few times...Never bought. Gotta be the one and only when someone looks to sell.
Funny you mention Porsches. I have a 74 base 911 with a 3.0L that's been redone except for paint because I don't want to worry about nicks. It accelerates plenty fast enough to scare me and even the clock works, and all the interior lights. I was looking to sell but have no idea of value.

I had a 75 about 5 years ago. It was a quick pass thru. It was ugly brown. Mileage was 120k bought it for 5 and sold for like 7.
Paint is a big deal...Mileage is somewhat key. General appearance? Your car can be valued in a very broad range. They have value for sure. But to attract a buyer based on a good return....Mileage/Paint/history are key. This car can potentially be valued well.... if want a professional opinion...send me a PM and I'll yak with my son.

I may do that. Out here in CA 1975 and older cars do not require smog tests which makes certain years more attractive, at least in CA. The paint is good but I know some rust will be found upon preparation. The interior is excellent and all redone. From 10 feet away the exterior looks very good, it's Silver and nowhere close to looking like a clunker. Even the Fuch wheels were redone by a well know wheel restoration guy in Anaheim CA. It starts and idles fine even after sitting for a month. I'm not sure about selling because it's such a great car and even good for Costco runs for $600 worth of groceries that actually fit in the car. LOL.

A few questions. The 74 came with a 2.7. They were known to blow up pretty quick though. So is the 3.0 a replacement engine? It looks in nice shape. Mileage? Are you serious about selling?
The 3.0L was checked and tuned in Orange County, CA. Yes, the 74 was a 2.7. The 3.0L was a transplant long ago. The car was my wife's uncle's who let it sit for around 20 years in NJ. We shipped the car to CA in 2018 and it went to two Porsche specialists for which we said "we want this car to be reliable and safe". About $20k later the car was returned to operational condition.

I'll check with son. My quick guess is value is 38 if was original. With 2nd motor ? That's a little out of my wheel house. My guess is my son has turned over more than 100 of these in the last 10 years....He has two sweet 930's right now.

Car prices are crazy right now. My 99 wrangler is going for between 14k-19k right now. I paid $4500 7 years ago. I have an alert for e30 M3. Cheapest one in last 5 months is 45k which is nuts for an ‘88-90. Most are going for $85-100k.

So...2 months ago my son hit me up to go inspect a car for him. An M5 e30. One owner 75k miles. Guy drove it as daily driver, had kids it sat and fast forward 10 plus years and time to make room for something else. Car was sweet. It's now in my sons garage. He paid 27.5 for it and the guy threw in 2nd set rims tires, brembo brakes set. My advise to you is go get an M5 instead of M3...It's a better car and cheaper.

Thanks. Any pics/prices for the 930s would be great.

Just got off phone with son Mike. You can go to F40.com and look him up. Chasing Classic Cars is about the longest running car show. My son is sales mgr. His 930's are per se not for sale. I'll pass a PM with his contact info. Best you two just geterdone. Best, Doug

I saw this yesterday and it made me wanna buy a new car. I love that color. 20210619_113718.jpg

Anyone out there have a GMC crew cab AT4? I initially wanted to get the Denali version but leaning towards the AT4 now....that thing is nice!

A few months ago I was forced to buy a car or drive my truck 84 miles round trip every work day. So I choose an economical inexpensive car. I Honda Fit!! Well it Fits to the tune of 38.6 mpg to date for $19000 out the door. Also that was with 125,000 mile warranty bumper to bumper.
I like to call it my go kart. Company cars got taken away.

I almost bought one a few months ago. Came to my senses that the price didn’t justify the means.

Stopped at a NJ dealer on Monday. End price was sticker plus $299 for mandatory window vin etching, $895 for fabric and paint care, and an extra $8,000 dealer markup. Over a $9,000 markup on a $44,000 car.
I’m used to a 20% or more discount from sticker, not the other way around.
It’ll be interesting to see values a year or so from now. If the economy tanks and people wind up upside down in equity.

So true. The only possible offset might be getting close to $9k over the typical value for a trade-in due to the shortage of used cars.

I've heard folks are buying out their leases because the buy-out is far lower in cost vs. paying all the markups on a new car. That's one reason why used car inventory has dried up.
I am in this camp. I bought my car at end of lease last month. The residual price I could buy it for was easily $12k less than what it would sell for on their used side.

Which one is that?
Volkswagen Atlas. Might be the sport version.

It’s definitely the Atlas Cross Sport. I have it in the new grey color and love it. That yellow color and the chrome deletes are definitely aftermarket, but very attractive!

Yeah, I'm in love with that color. I should have waited for the owner to come out

I have a new Denail but almost got an AT4. In the trim I wanted they only had a black AT4 with the Carbon Pro bed. I'm not a fan of black trucks because they are never clean and the tonneau from my SLT would not fit the carbon bed. They were also back ordered on running boards.

I was bummed to not get the AT4 at first but 60 days later I'm glad I went Denail as I use it mostly for highway driving and the ride is awesome.

Been searching the past few months for the right deal on a Volvo XC90 and finally found one last week (only had to travel 200 miles from my house to dealership haha). Ended up going the certified pre-owned route (clean CarFax, 1 previous owner leased) and was able to find the exterior/interior color I wanted combo'ed with the packages/add-ons I desired for a price that was below blue book value. My short term maintenance expenses should also be pretty limited as a lot of items were replaced during the certification process (new rotors/brake pads, all fluids flushed and replaced, new front/rear wipers, oil & filter change, air filters replaced). Overall I'm very happy with the vehicle I ended up with and glad I took my time to find the right vehicle (even though it took a month or two longer than expected and I had to travel a few hours away to obtain the vehicle).

Looked at a new C8 Vette I'm a little perplexed with the new Vette because, on the one hand, it's very cool, but on the other hand, there's no room for golf clubs and bags like the C7 and older Vettes. Thus the problem is the C8 is now truly a local driver car vs. a car that can be taken on trips with clubs and bags. So IMO the new Vette has become a local driver (Cars & Coffee Car) which is too bad.
