The Driver is the Bane of Amateur Golfers w/ Over 14 HC

Probably fair in a lot of cases. The long term goal ultimately has to be to get it functional most of the time though. The distance disadvantage is too great to stick to playing hybrids etc. off the tee forever.

My playing partner is in this boat and the distance he's giving away to me throughout a whole round is significant.

100%. If you're the rare player who struggles with driver but for some reason can hit fairway woods and hybrids super straight, the takeaway should be to practice driver not give up hitting it. Giving up 30+ yards on every tee shot is a huge concession. Those yards are worth 3+ strokes for a typical mid to high handicap golfer.
