The Home Renovation Thread

Spent the weekend installing new laminate up at the cabin. Sadly I didn’t pick the color because I don’t like the way it looks with the walls now but the floor looks great haha

Pretty loose definition of home renovation, but it’s about the limits of my skills. Front door repainted LOL

Are you going to change the wall color?

One thing we did after our floor was complete - everything that went on it had foot protectors installed. Either sticky felt pads or the softish rubber cups. It helped... until there was the family Thanksgiving and someone showed up with folding chairs... and one leg didn't have a protector on it... :eek:and there was an antsy teenager sitting in it.

Surprisingly, while there was some scratching, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We no longer do family Thanksgiving at my house.(y)

Not sure on the walls, probably not right away at least. Brutal about the folding chair, that was the first thing I looked at before putting stuff back. Luckily is a cabin so isn’t used as much as a home, hopefully we won’t have to worry about mistakes like that.

Yeah, it sucked about the floor but it's in a spot that doesn't show too well... thankfully.:D

Seeing this thread pop up I was reminded that I never updated this thread with pictures of my remodel. It's been a great success. It was rough being with out air conditioning for 2 weeks in 110F weather, thankfully I had some great friends that let me stay with them even with Covid going on. The new insulation and A/C was installed just in time for the hottest summer ever recorded in PHX. 55 days over 110F and 143 days over 100F. That said my cooling bill (electric) was at least $110 less in each month of June, July, Aug, and September from the year prior. The livability of my house has been completely transformed.

This is the week I take on a major home improvement project. Major roof over haul. Since buying the house I removed the grass and xeriscaped the front yard and replaced the front door. During that time, it's become obvious that the level of roof insulation is very lacking. Turns out it was much worse than I thought.

My house was built in 1971. It's a bit unique in that it has no attic. Instead it has a major beam down the middle with large beams instead of rafters. In over half of the house has those beams exposed. When it became time to replace the shingles, I investigated the best way to solve the insulation issue. Close cell Spray foam rose to the top of the list. However to add that, it meant a complete rebuilding of the roof. So Thursday, the shingles get removed. Ripped 2x10 will elevate the center 9.5 inches and repitch the roof line to create a space for the spray foam.

This gives me an opportunity to add recessed ceiling lights and ceiling fans to the bedrooms. but hiding the wires above the "old" roof deck. Once that is done they will spray foam 3 to 6 inches to add a minimum of R21 to the existing insulation. I have a roof top Heat Pump...so a new one of those gets installed as well. While rain is not in the forecast.....three days of 110F are.

Once that's done....time to repaint the house.

Love the bathroom, well done! I'm sure you have limited say in the selections! :)
Especially like the rain shower head with hand held... very similar finishes and tiles when we renovated including the rain shower, but I have to especially compliment the floor tile in the shower, love how it makes that 'pop' and still compliment the wall tiles..... I (well, let's be honest, my wife) messed up and went with 'accent' color for the shower floor and it's not as dramatic.

may be time to re-renovate....

@GolferGal did a great job picking stuff out

Wow, that is a serious amount of work. No insulation in the AZ heat?! 🤯🤯🤯

my roofer about had a heart attack when he came to bid the job and discovered how my house was built. I had 1.5 inches of styrofom as my roof insullation. Its amazing now. with 3-6 inches of closed cell foam up there.

4B336D72-6200-43CB-8013-179B292FEBBA.jpegWife was complaining about it being too cold in our living room. This was due to the fact I had disconnected the vent pipe because of the stairs I’m putting in. So to make the wife happy I cut the hole in our floor to bring the new vent up....which led to me remembering I can’t just leave the hose there due to a 2 year old putting all his toys down there. So to just get a project done that will have to eventually be done down the road I started the window seat. Only had one mental mistake so far. Hoping to have it done by the weekend.

Finally got this project done. It’s been a long time coming

Thanks! The shower floor is my favorite part of the bathroom. I saw something similar in a picture and when we went to pick out the tile I showed them the picture and told them I wanted something like that. I love how it pops too.

Clearly you have an eye for it! Honestly, the bathroom looks/feels ‘luxury hotel’ which is what my wife was going for, but she missed it a bit with shower floor tile (IMHO) which I can say since she’ll never read this! 😜
Great job! You should consult in your down time! 😉

Haha, thank you, but honestly I am so bad at design. I have such a hard time making a decison, and my style is all over the place, it's hard for me to settle on something, but I really am happy with how the bathroom turned out. I was going for a spa feel without feeling too sterile. The whites and grays can be too sterile sometimes, and I really didn't want that. I am going to add some pops of color in there to warm it up a bit too.

Wife is nagging me everyday when her damn countertops will be done.. I don't know, do I look like the friggin marble guy?!?!?!

Hoping for next week as we're both off, but just want to be done and that will be the last major project for 2020..

2021 will start with setting up the nursery, can't wait to see what ill have to do for that

My wife thinks I'm pretty average (at best) in most things, but when it comes to projects, she thinks I have super powers. Or should have.

Just need to finish lattice, fascia, and stairs! 🥳

Our kitchen has started being fitted this morning, so I will see some progress when I get home this evening - apparently the fitter reckons it is 4 days worth of work in total

He is also fitting the new skirting round the rest of the kitchen where there are no units, and around the dining room, then helping the plumber build some box units for around the boiler and the new toilet to be fitted against

Fingers crossed it all goes to plan, which should mean we will have a kitchen again for the weekend

En-suite bathroom in the master got completed today. It was a couple in their 80’s who were the previous owners so there was a walk in pod style shower. Missus also wanted a double vanity installed. Not entirely sold on the new floor yet. It may grow on me.

Just itching to get going on our master bathroom and downstairs powder room. Looks like it will be a while before I get to tackle them.

Why we didn't do them before the baby came along, I don't know. I could have knocked it out in a couple weeks, but now it will be like 2 years before I am allowed to start demo

Kitchen progress is being made, cupboards and base units are going in, new sink was fitted in to the worktop this afternoon

Electrician will be here tomorrow to get various bits of wiring to the correct cupboards for the oven, fridge freezer etc, and the plumber will be here to get the radiators put on the wall, so we may even have heating back in that end of the house again by the end of the day
