The Liv Golf Rumor and News Thread

Which is totally fair and fine. They play some fun courses. But almost 2 billion lost not including this past season is pretty wild..
The laughter comes because we heard the same thing by a few after years, 1, 2, 3, etc. These same people have never watched a minute and at this point it’s wishful thinking because LIV harmed them in some way.

I hope it fails because as a golf fan I want players playing, but this notion of money and ratings being discussed is hysterical. In 17 years it’s never been mentioned about the LPGA which lost millions again, had horrible ratings and is a terrible product.

That part doesn’t fit the narrative sadly. And while some want to discuss objectively, there are the melting snowflakes that are just the back of a shampoo bottle at this point of lather, rinse and repeat and eventually it will be true. Because for the last handful of years, every ******* thing in the posts has been wrong.

I get not making money, but 2 billion lost in 3 years right is just a staggering amount.. I am not even sure that is an accurate number.. it could be low. For example. Rahm is only reported to have Ben paid 75 million so far. But has a 500 mil contract and has winnings in there as well..
Considering who the PIF is (and I’m not saying $2billion is not a lot of money) but with them it’s a sliding scale and more realistically represents thousands of dollars to us in terms of comparison. My point is when they are printing money because of oil, a billion is and made up pretty quickly

I totally understand that. But I still don’t think they like just burning money.

So we going to talk about DJs 77 in his last round? 😂😂

You’d be surprised what they are ok with but then we venture into political talk and trying to clean money lol

Ha. For sure. But the I in PIF does stand for investment and people do want a return.. eventually.. I don’t think it is the doomsday people want just yet. But I don’t think it’s good. I also think these numbers in large measure are why the tour is willing to ride it out. They know it is unsustainable as well. Especially given that really the fear of losing anymore big names is really gone.

From what I have seen from the PIF Yair AI-Rumayyan interviews, the PIF is really looking at the potential of golf growing globally. Golf in the US is pretty tapped, but in many parts of the world there is very low participation rate. They are looking for growth in those areas. It would not surprise me if LIV starts having a tournament stop in China in the near future because China really has potential for growth in golf.

They make a billion dollars a day. They don't give a s#!t about two billion dollars. That's pocket money for them.

What about it? Conditions were tough and Carnoustie isn’t easy when the weather is brutal

Yes, at some point money really is meaningless. Hard to comprehend for some of us living from paycheck to paycheck, but do you really think Taylor Swift even considers what something might cost these days? If she wants it, it’s hers. And her wealth is nothing compared with that of the LIV backers.

I was getting chirped for the 64 this just seems fair. lol Also others still took it deep.

Golf is hard and that’s how I see it. Kudos to those who figured it out

Thought I heard some were playing the old course, not Carnoustie.
Looks like they are rotating three

Don’t disagree.. one round good our bad is kinda meaningless.. that was my whole point.

I wouldn’t say their meaningless It just doesn’t tell the full story based on the conditions and the different courses they were playing. Not all players are being evaluated equally in my opinion.

They are. They will all end playing all the courses..

What does this have to do with anything? It’s like a red herring. Who cares if the LPGA loses money. No one is starting a competing league and hardly anyone is watching it in the first place.

On the other hand when a trillionaire comes and ruins your favorite sport by splitting it in two just because they can, then yeah, f**k them. I’ll always feel that way about LIV. Is what it is.

This is why the major sports leagues haven't allowed sovereign investment funds to invest in ownership. right up until team valuations got too high for the single owner model and they started to allow it. for now they're holding the line on minority partnerships only, but...

what happens if a "pour money down the drain" investment fund becomes the controlling owner of a non-salary cap team such as in baseball?
LIV golf is what happens. good for the players, at times it can even be entertaining, but ultimately it's bad for the sport.

Just have to look at European football/soccer with Chelsea, Manchester City, PSG and their 'financial doping' from the early 2000s

only if we think of it as a zero sum game and I don't think it necessarily is.

I never watch pro golf. It bores me to years. Then LIV came along and I have been mildly interested enough to watch probably 15 or 20 minutes of it.

But the guys doing their own channels of LIV? I have watched the Michelson-Bryan match several times. Makes me laugh every time, the incredible chirps. The Duels since they let the Bryan bros team do the filming and editing? Absolutely I will watch that. Fun watch.

Other Mickelson videos on short game and how he thinks through. The Rahm Bryan match(es). And so forth. Some Fleetwood (is he on the LIV? I actually don't know and don't care enough to look it up...but he seems to have jumped on the youtube bandwagon which I largely credit the pros doing to the LIV allowance)

Do I directly watch LIV? Extremely rarely. But what it did do is take a complete non-watcher of golf and brought some players in to where I am interested enough to watch some of their other content.

Now, I am just one person and I am not exactly going to move the needle. But the advent of LIV cost, in my case, zero golfers for golf overall and kinda sorta added one, at least on the periphery.

So it has done some good from the standpoint of adding eyeballs. In my talks with randoms I am matched up with I know I am not alone. Enough to represent a ratings point? Doubtful but it very well could be something in the future.

Again, I have no dog in the fight, just thought I would throw a slightly different perspective out there to chew on.

tour guys can have youtube channels as well and more seem to be jumping in. Jday, Fleetwood seem to be moving fast into that space. Others will as well.

I say this as a fan of professional golf without regards to tour: this could have all been prevented. So f **k your favored entity too.
